The overhead bin space is such a pain point. Husband's flight a week and a half ago was on a 700 series so the really small bins. A guy across from him was in the back of Group 1 but had to put his bag 8 rows back (these were in Extra Legroom seats upfront but I can't remember which row).
Pretty much all the flights my husband has said overhead bin space is a problem with it running out and that's with him being in Group 1 or Group 2 (doesn't seem to be a set pattern either for which group he is assigned on each flight). But the planes he's been on with the larger bins that you put your carry on sideways has been better.
Also I haven't heard much about people buying Priority Boarding though my husband's flights have had people on it (as others have here). He did randomly decide to check and the flight he took a week and a half ago one of the legs from Denver (his connection point) to John Wayne airport was $27, he didn't pay it but just was curious what it would have cost.
