Harry Potter - No Spoiler Thread

Ok, so I'm going on a trip to England in 6 weeks, and I'm despirately trying to save the Harry Potter book until then. What are the odds that I'll both

a) actually hold out

b) manage not to see a spoiler between now and then

I'm not foolish enough to visit the newsgroup, where last time some jerk posted the biggest spoiler in the book in the title of a thread, but I can't tell you how I've been tempted to roll my cursor over the HP thread here! I'm dying to know whether the little frowny face is because the book is sad or becauce they were disappointed. (no! don't tell me!)

Anyhow, I've got the copy in my suitcase. It seems shorter than the last one. Much support to any others trying...to...hold...out!

I'm trying to remove myself from the Potter talk, too. I'm only about 300 pages into it.

My impressions so far? There are typos and the over-use of the colon and semi-colon in the writing style are starting to bug me. So, that could be the reason for the frown face. :cool1:

I read it in 9 hours on Saturday.

I'm already re-reading it. Slower...to absorb more.

read it now - then re-read it on the plane!

I'm so angry - I think I got spoiled by the title of a thread on another message board. WHY do people do that? I'm hoping it was a joke. Anyway, I'm trying to go through the book slowly, but its not working!

This morning, I was flipping radio stations and I heard "So, he's sort of dead...they sort of killed him?" and immediately changed the station! Next time, no station surfing....just stick to what I have on so there is fair warning.

I didn't even visit the DIS or turn on the TV until I finished the book, I was so afraid I would hear a spoiler. Last book I patiently waited for my dd to read the book first before I started. She finished the book very late on Sunday evening - the next morning she was leaving for camp. I was the car-pool driver for camp that morning - waiting until I got back from delivering the kids to start reading. Drove 4 houses down the block to pick up one of the neighbor girls & she pops in the car & announces who died (book 5)! I almost made her walk to camp!

Maybe the sad faces are because the readers have now finished & we are now starting the long wait for Book 7!

I'm desparately trying NOT to read spoiler or hear them here (hiding out with only kids shows on TV, listening ONLY to kids music on radio....staying off the threads)...but it's KILLING ME. I have my own business, and before I allowed myself to start reading (typically only 3-5 hours to read the HP books), I had to be caught up on business stuff. I could read it today, but I need to do homeschooling stuff with older DS, then I get my new studio lights today for a client tomorrow...which means I have to "play" tonight to figure them out...gotta wash the backdrops....ahhhh...I wanna read HP. I read far enough to find out what he scored on his OWLs, which was my biggest "cliff hanger" from last book.

I found though that I should re-read the first 5 though to refresh my mind on minute details. I didn't read the others until last summer, so I read all 5 in 2 weeks and was extremely immerssed and impressed with the complex story lines. So far (chapter 5 is as far as I have gotten...trying to go slow) I'm not as impressed. I'm hoping it is my not being totally focused because of business stuff, or the fact I didn't just read the other 5.

So, what I would do (leaving for a trip) would be pick up the first 5 again and re-read them. :D Gives you a Harry Potter fix, gets you very ready for book 6...and hopefully will help you last until you leave!

I noted that too, and was very disappointed. I expected better editing.

Here's some examples: (I just made mental notes, and don't have the book in front of me right now)
pg. 10 -- The word "site" is used when it should have been "sight"
pg. 386 -- A word is incorrectly capitalized in the middle of a sentence

One that sticks out in my mind was page 135 where it says "If Malfoy wants something fixing....." instead of "fixed". It seemed written differently...a different style and very poorly edited.

But, the story is still great, so I keep reading!

That's the only one I noticed although it isn't on page 135 in my book. I reread it a couple of times. Perhaps it is an English saying?

I used that to rationalize the "misty fug" at the beginning of Chapter 3. :) It would be interesting to hear from someone from England to see if there is a such thing as a "misty fug" and if "something fixing" is a term that's used.

Fug: A heavy, stale atmosphere, especially the musty air of an overcrowded or poorly ventilated room (from dictionary.com)

I love learning new words!!!

LOL, I was trying to figure out the "misty fug" also. I figure it has to be a typo. I only started reading last night since we were away until yesterday (I had my mom pick up the book and leave it at my house :teeth: ) so I am only about 1/4 of the way through it. I am dying to know what happens and I am forcing myself to stay away from the spoiler threads.

Well, here is the trade off.... they can spend LOTS more time editing book 8 and you can wait a few more months! You decide!

In my book, pg. 15, it says, "The sight, therefore, of Fudge stepping out of the fire once more..." Is this what you are referring to? It sounds like there already may have been some reprints!!!

I am trying to find the incorrect capital on page 386 (or thereabouts since the copies are obviously different)

Gee, I wish I had my book with me!! (but DD insisted that I leave it at home so she could read it!)

I think that is the correct sentence, damo. I remember reading it about 3 times to make sure I was seeing it correctly. But my copy distinctly says "site" . . .

And yes, I remember reading "misty fug" too -- and just assuming that it was an British saying.

While we are discussing this, what are TRAINERS? I assume they are athletic shoes, or tennis shoes? :confused3

Trainers are shoes. We call them cross trainers here in North America.

I'm not reading it right now. DD 14 read it straight through. She was up all night and she found the book to be very disturbing. She has my curiosity up. She loves HP books, but this one really got to her. She says she doesn't know if she likes it at all. :confused3

My 16 year old son, said that this was his absolute favourite of all the Harry Potter books. He loved the darkness of it!
