Looking for any info on Greenville SC. My hubby and I are thinking about moving from Florida to Greenville, we love it up there but don't really have any good info about it. Anybody live there that can give me ideas on areas and school systems. Thanks

I don't live in Greenville, we live near Clemson which is about 30 minutes away. We moved to the area 11 years ago from VA and really love it here. The climate is ideal and you are a short distance from the mountains and the coast. Greenville is located close enough to Charleston and Myrtle Beach to be able to go for weekends. And Asheville, NC is also very close. I really can't help you with schools though. We are very pleased with the schools in our area but I have heard the coastal schools have problems-I don't know if that's true or not. Crime is very low here and the cost of living is quite affordable. Our real estate has held it's own and actually the whole Greenville area has continued to show growth where many areas are on a decline. Let me know if I can help with anything else. HTH

Thanks, Goofycampers. We are going up to that area to visit relatives in about 3 weeks, I think we will do some serious looking around. I will let you know if I have further questions. Thanks for your help.

I lived in Greenville from 1985-2005. I really liked it there. There is so much to do, lots and lots of shopping, movies and restaurants, a great downtown area with sidewalk dining and lots of foot traffic. The Peace Center for the Performing Arts is a fantastic venue for any attraction you can think of, touring Broadway groups to Jethro Tull concert. My DH and I used to have front row center season tickets for the Broadway series. As I remember, the cost of living was reasonable, housing was reasonable, too. The schools....well, you have to get a good realtor to tell you where the good schools are. We lucked out and had our kids in a district with a great school. Some are not so great. Private school as I recall was very expensive.

We used to live on Paris Mountain, the only mountain in Greenville. You should drive up there if you get the chance, it is a really beautiful area to live in. The houses were pricey back then, but you have a large lot and who knows, now they may be going for a song.

Greenville is a great little city, with small town southern charm. And if you need a big city fix, Atlanta is only about 2 hours away.

The Disney Catalog Warehouse is about an hour away, and they have a great outlet!:thumbsup2

Great community. I would move there in a minute. One of the best kept secrets of the South...

We live about an hour south of Greenville in Greenwood. We have lived here about 11 years and love this area. It's not quite as large as Greenville but is a very nice small city. My husband teaches at one of the middle schools here and we have a granddaughter in the same school. We think they are good and although people complain about the lack of shopping, we don't have a problem with it. We also have excellent medical care.

Well, I was a transplanted Yankee who lived in Greenville for almost 10 years, and let me tell you, I would highly recommend it to anybody.
Some of the things I liked most about it were:

The shopping - lots and lots of great shopping malls, and centers.

The dining - So many great choices

The Culture - From sports to performing arts, to religious activities, Greenville has so much to offer

The Churches - If you are somebody who likes to go to church, I can pretty much guarantee that you will be able to find a church home there.

The Hospitals - when my son was born my wife had some of the best medical care you could possibly ask for.

The location - Pretty close to both the beach and the mountains (and not too far from Disney). You have both Atlanta, Columbia and Charlotte within pretty easy driving range if you want a taste of the big city.

The people - at least on a superficial level, everyone will be really nice to you, and greet you as you pass them by.

What I didn't like:

the heat - being from FLA that shouldn't bother you at all. As a Yankee it was torture sometimes though.

The driving - some of the worst drivers I've ever seen.

Some of the people are still fighting the Civil War - they are a dying breed, but you will run across quite a few who don't realize that the war actually ended (and that they lost - just don't tell them).

I'm sorry I don't know more about the schools. My first child was only 2 when we left. But like others have said, I've heard that there are some really good schools, and some pretty bad schools. I would definitely do some checking around before making a decision about a school.
