Well, I was a transplanted Yankee who lived in Greenville for almost 10 years, and let me tell you, I would highly recommend it to anybody.
Some of the things I liked most about it were:
The shopping - lots and lots of great shopping malls, and centers.
The dining - So many great choices
The Culture - From sports to performing arts, to religious activities, Greenville has so much to offer
The Churches - If you are somebody who likes to go to church, I can pretty much guarantee that you will be able to find a church home there.
The Hospitals - when my son was born my wife had some of the best medical care you could possibly ask for.
The location - Pretty close to both the beach and the mountains (and not too far from Disney). You have both Atlanta, Columbia and Charlotte within pretty easy driving range if you want a taste of the big city.
The people - at least on a superficial level, everyone will be really nice to you, and greet you as you pass them by.
What I didn't like:
the heat - being from FLA that shouldn't bother you at all. As a Yankee it was torture sometimes though.
The driving - some of the worst drivers I've ever seen.
Some of the people are still fighting the Civil War - they are a dying breed, but you will run across quite a few who don't realize that the war actually ended (and that they lost - just don't tell them).
I'm sorry I don't know more about the schools. My first child was only 2 when we left. But like others have said, I've heard that there are some really good schools, and some pretty bad schools. I would definitely do some checking around before making a decision about a school.
