Grandpa Mohawk takes a fall

Oh No! I'm so sorry to hear about GM!! Please know that you both are in our thoughts and prayers!!

I am so sorry! Have enjoyed your adventures-wishing GM a speedy recovery and take care of yourself-please let us know how you're doing (if possible).

I am so sorry to hear this. I am praying for his healing, and a safe trip back home.

Prayers for both of you and hoping for a quick and full recovery.

Sending get well wishes and pixiedust: pixiedust: With his attitude and your support he should be on the recovery road quickly. Is there any family member who can come and help with the drive home or maybe flying him home would be best ?

Wow, fractured femur is a tough injury at any age! Sounds like the medics were all over him (as they should have been), and he's gotten excellent care.

Please know that you both are in our thoughts and prayers, and best wishes for a successful recovery.

We'll miss GM's reports for the rest of this trip, but look forward to many more in the future.

Oh dear, you and GM will be in my thoughts and prayers. I always look forward to hearing of your travels and I didn't even want to open this thread because I knew it would be bad news and you and your dad are just terrific, and this saddens me!

Oh no. You poor thing! And poor Grandpa Mohawk! Please keep us posted and let us know how you both are doing.

Best wishes on Grandpa Mohawk's surgery. And please let him know I love his mohawk, even if it IS Raven colors....says the girl from Pittsburgh!

I'm very sorry to read this! :sad2: I just caught up on your blog yesterday. I hope Grandpa Mohawk makes a fast recovery. :flower3: All my best!

Hi everyone,

Well life has taken a sudden interesting twist. While we were in the process of moving over from our offsite Marriott resort to Disney's Boardwalk, I'm afraid my dad took a nasty spill. We had stopped at Mary Queen of the Universe for church and were just getting back into our van. He forgot where he was and backed into our van's ramp just as it was deploying.

I feel horrible because I had been the one to deploy the ramp and all I had time to do was shout his name before he came tumbling down on the pavement.

So 5 paramedics later, a trip to the emergency room and he's wound up with a broken leg. They tell me he's to have surgery tomorrow to probably pin and set the bone. (It's his left femor, upper thigh.)

I'm at a bit of sixes right now because I suddenly had to take over all the caretaker and independence duties. Fortunately I have a van I can drive and the staff at the BWV have been absolutely fabulous to me. I've had them lowering things where I can reach them, and help me lift and move things too heavy for me to handle. Meanwhile I've been shuffling back and forth to the hospital and coordinating with family back home.

I'm not sure what the trip will be like from now on. I have to worry about getting GM the 900 miles home and he'll be living the life of the disabled for a few months. Sorry to say there won't be anymore Grandpa Mohawk chronicles this trip. We're both a bit bummed because we had just been gearing up for our Disneymania portion of the trip. Thursday was to be a combo birthday/Halloween party and we scored a Boardwalk view room for the opening of Food & Wine.

GM is in good spirits though. He's already asking for a fireworks view at the hospital.

If you have any pixie dust to send our way, we could sure use it about now.

Best wishes and prayers for you and your family!

And, of course, buckets and buckets of pixiedust! :goodvibes

Oh no, Brogan! I am so sorry to hear about Grandpa Mohawk. I will be praying that all goes well with his surgery and that he has a speedy recovery. Take care!

Hey guys,

Thank you ALL for the best wishes and prayers. It feels very good to know there are lots of people out there caring about my dad and I.

I'll give you a little update on how the situation fares. He was to have surgery to put a rod and pin in yesterday. From there the prognosis is good with rehab starting right away and release from the hospital in 3 days. If he's able to transfer himself from a chair then they'll let him go home or to Disney. He'll have to fly home either way which means I need to get our van back home. If he's not able to transfer himself, he's not flight-worthy and they'll move him to an in-care facility near Millenium Mall until he's able (a few days to a week or so). We won't know about rehab time until his surgery.

Unfortunately, they had him waiting all day for surgery (thinking it wasn't as severe a case). When they took him down last night and started putting him under his heart rate spiked. He went into A-Fib (abnormal heart rhythm). It's an issue he's had once or twice before when he was pushed to his limits. Extreme cold, a day of not eating, the stress and who knows what else may have caused it.

So the surgery was scrubbed and he was put back in a more intensive care floor (not ICU just more monitoring so they could give him medicine to calm his heart). He's back to normal sinus rhythm, is eating and is waiting on the cardialogist to re-evaluate.

So basically we're having a do over, with hopefully better care management today. Keep in mind I'm not blaming anyone as the surgery was not supposed to be a big issue and he's been normal cardiac-wise all the while until this
incident.

Understandably any heart issue sent panic waves through my family. I ran my cell phone batteyr down yesterday talking to my 3 sibs back home. My cousin is flying down on Thursday and preparing to stay with me until we can get ourselves home again. I lvoe the rest of my siblings but they are so close to the issue they tend to panic rather than be truly helpful. Still at least one will be flying down when it's time to move my dad. I may get a brother sooner. I'm not sure.

My dad is doing well spirit-wise through this. His leg is still broken but the pain is much more tolerable. We just need to get this surgery done so we can get him back on his feet. He's a tough old bird so I'm confident we'll get through this and Grandpa Mohawk's travels will continue. (Our next Disney trip is set for New Year's.)

The staff at the Boardwalk have been absolutely terrific to me. They keep checking in, getting me food, even turning down my bed and tucking me in at night. They offered to let me stay rather than shift over to SSR tomorrow, but knowing it's F&W and this is a Boardwalk View HA studio I fully expect it to be booked. I am not about to disrupt anyone else's vacation. So I'm getting them to just help me move over tomorrow or possibly shift to the Inn side. I know SSR's staff is just as wonderful and I have the HA room (with roll-in shower) I absolutely need there, so I'm content to move.

It is a beautiful view here. I do have the room over the Screen Door (2047) with the high balcony wall, but I can hear the Boardwalk music and see Beach/Yacht Club in the distance. I did get to ride Soarin' once before the hospital yesterday. Haven't seen the fireworks yet though. Ironic since I'd have a great view of them here. Oh well. 10 hour days at the hospital do not leave much time for Disney.

Thank you all for your prayers and good wishes!

Brogan: just had a thought--how long will GM be in the hospital?

Will it be long enough to be able to get some get well cards? If so, if you could give us the name and address of the hospital and other contact info I will pop a card in the mail today!

I don't know what room as they keep shifting him around. A card or two may just help cheer him. He loves to hear what's been said about him or to him hear. We're both just sorry he can't be around to meet some of the DISers who planned to come down these weeks and find him. He loves meeting people.

BroganMc,
Your indomitable spirit inspires me, so it must also do wonders for GM. Hope that the surgery is done soon so your lives can move forward. Pixie dust to you and GM!

I can't believe it. I have just been following along on your blog and had no idea. A broken leg is certainly NOT what you were needing on this trip. Thank goodness you're together, though. Tell Grandpa Mohawk that we're all thinking of him and wish him a speedy recovery. And here's a hug for you too - My DH broke his leg about 5 years ago and being the caregiver brings its own stress, I know. Hang in there, BroganMc.

I love you Lilo & Stitch logo. Team Ohana reminds me of me and my dad. (I'd be the Lilo and he's definitely the Stitch.) :)

Prayers for both of you. I hope surgery goes well today.

 Add me to the list of DISers sending warm wishes for a speedy recovery for GM and :tink: for you to have all that you need BroganMC. I will also pray that GM's caretakers do their best work in his medical care.

I'm glad that the BW CMs have been able to offer that Disney excellence to you during this difficult time.

And of course, I'm sad about the blog. Your writing gifts bring your ventures to life for so many of us.
