Going to Charleson, SC in 3 weeks

We ate at a restaurant called Husk
The food was awesome. Get a ressie from Open Table if you decide to try it.

We like the harbor tour/Fort Sumter tour. Great on a nice day!

The plantations are also great - check them out online to decide which one you want to visit, as they are quite different.

Charleston is a city best seen on foot, IMO.

Great beaches and great seafood, too. Where are you staying?

Our son lived there for a bit and we just love it there. Hank's is one of the absolute best places to eat, Poogan's Porch, Jestine's for traditional old-style cooking but the owner is a bit of a snob, brunch at the Vendue Inn (if they still do it!) is very good also. At the end of the block where the slave market is, there is a lovely hotel that actually has a doorman outside all the time and the restaurant is right inside...you can see it through the windows. We have *not* eaten there but if you go inside and take the elevator to the roof, there is a bar up there that looks out over the city. Very very pretty. Vendue Inn has one as well but with the condos over along the battery it isn't as pretty a view as it used to be.

Definitely do a carriage ride simply so you can see inside the gated gardens of the historic homes. Breathtaking! Every time you take a carriage ride you can get a different route because they stagger the carriages for the purposes of traffic so hopefully you get one that runs along the battery! If you're into things ghostly, there are some cool ghost walks at night as well!

As an aside, heels are a total PITA in Charleston's historic district. The roads are made of stone from ballast off ships and it is brutal trying to walk on it! lol Have a great time. Charleston is really a great city.

We enjoyed dinner at La Fourchette! I would highly recommend a walking tour - we were lucky enough to have ours all to ourselves. If you can manage it, we went to Drayton Hall and it was a highlight of our trip...Middleton Place was in the same area, so both made a good day for us. We purchased the Charleston pass that turned out to be a great deal for us. We were able to get to most of the places offered. There was nothing that we did not enjoy. Have a great trip!

be sure to wait for a turn on one of the big swings on the dock -- worth it just to relax for a little!

So, where should we eat? What shouldn't we miss?

Thanks

We just visited Charleston for the first time over the summer. I loved it!! Wish we had stayed a couple more days even. We stayed at the French Quarter Inn, right next to the Old City Market. The market is kind of cool to check out. Just walking around Charleston is enjoyable in itself, looking at the old homes and churches. We did a carriage ride which is pretty informative. Our daughter loved playing in the fountains with all the kids at the Waterfront Park.
The most memorable dining experience was from Hymans. They are very famous for their seafood, as they should be! It's really affordable food and really delicious. We saw people lined up along the street to eat there. We had it delivered to our hotel room. Since we had the kids during this trip, we skipped on the fine dining options.
Unfortunately, we were only there for a couple of days and there are still several other things I want to see in Charleston. Enjoy your time there!! :)

Definitely a carriage ride and tour one of the homes downtown, and a visit to one of the plantations. Our favorite restaurant closed but as others said Poogan's Porch is good. My mom loves 82 Queens (I think that's the name...) Just walking around downtown is great. We visited the Charleston museum and some of the homes you can tour as part of the museum last year and it was great. My boys loved looking at their gun collection.

Beautiful city but I would look in Fodor's travel guide and they will direct you. Of course locals could too but lol u have to get there first.:woohoo::woohoo:

We live about 1 hr and 30 min from Charleston. We go there ALL the time.... LOVE Charleston!!! One of our favorite places to eat is 82nd Queen. A great place to get pizza is Andolini's.

If this is your first time in Charleston take a carriage ride. Be sure to take a stroll through Waterfront Park. Get a swing and relax for a little bit. Also check out the market. They have recently redone it...it is beautiful now! There are lots of nice plantations to visit. We have done them all and our favs are Boone Hall and Magnolia.

If you want to venture out of town a little you can go to The Charleston Tea Plantation. http://www.charlestonteaplantation.com/ It is really interesting! Also the Angel Oak is a must see. So beautiful!! http://www.sciway.net/sc-photos/charleston-county/angel-oak.html

If you want to go to the beach our favorite is Kiawah! We vacation there a lot! Another nice beach is The Isle of Palms.

Enjoy your trip!!

If you like military history Patriots Point is a lot of fun. I believe the USS Yorktown is there (aircraft carrier), submarine, and other fun military things. We had our kids with us and they had a blast. We ate at Poogans Porch in downtown Charleston. We loved it there and can't wait to go back.

We've eaten at Poogan's Porch. It was good, but a little too crowded and busy for me.

Hotel with the doorman near the old Market - do you mean the Planter's Inn? They have a restaurant - the Peninsula Grill. I loved it there. Good food, great service and just very attentive wait staff. My friend wanted to try several wines before selecting a bottle and the bar tender was able to let her test several that are also by the glass.

Hyman's Seafood - we always do a lunch here. lots of atmosphere and boiled peanuts (hate boiled peanuts!) and hush puppies. Can't go wrong with fresh shrimp in Charleston!

I've eaten at many places in Charleston but my memory is slipping for names. I will update when I can remember the names.
