My Mom and I try to make tamales every year during Thanksgiving weekend--so that we can freeze them and have them for dinners and parties over Christmas. Our "record" was 380 tamales when I lived in Utah and had a big party (140 people!) at my house. Yes, they were all eaten! LOL
They are not hard to make--just time consuming. We usually cook the meat a day or two ahead (it's easier to shred when it is cold) then mix it with sauce and assemble the tortillas one day. We freeze them raw because they are better (in our opinion) when steamed fresh.

Good for you!! As for the 5 year old, doesn't he like cookies and cartoons?? That should buy you five minutes of alone time.

I'm not a big meat eater, so I prefer the chile and cheese ones.

My family (mom's side) has a tradition day (which my immediate family started with my grandma
I feel very special about that
) and we arrive early (around 4-5am) to my grandma's house about a week before Christmas and she usually has hot chocolate and mexican bread waiting for us. We talk a bit and end up falling asleep around 7-8am. Then we get up again around 10-11am and have our tradition day breakfast (chorizo and eggs) and get to work. We have an assembly line. Since my grandma has 11 grandkids + their gf/bfs(1 great grandkid) we set up a tamale factory. We also bake tons of stuff, play video games and watch a Charlie Brown Christmas, it's a wonderful life, Holiday Inn, & White Christmas. It's a great time.
We bought the dress, but want to add some pizzaz. Anyways, can't believe that my baby is old enough for these next steps of her life.
. Believe it or not, I'm actually one of the most normal people in my family
