My DD is going to on a summer trip with a group to another country. She is flying American Airlines and Qantas Airways, 5 flights in total. How do I get flyer miles for this trip? Anyone know if I should be signing her up somehow? TIA

You need to sign her up in their frequent flyer program. Then you need to make sure that her frequent flyer number is on the reservation. You can call to add it or show the card to the ticket agent at the airport.

Look to see if Quantas has any relationships with American. If so, she might do better signing up with (and earning miles in) just the AA account---it's easier to build on that way.

Qantas is a member of the OneWorld Alliance along with AA, so you can earn AAdvantage miles flying on Qantas. Unless you have a reason to expect that you will be doing a lot of traveling on Qantas going forward, you would be better just to sign up for AAdvantage with American and having all of the miles accumulate there as Brian has suggested.

Since she is traveling as a group there is a chance her fare class will be ineligible to earn frequent flyer miles if they booked a consolidated fare. That said sign her up anyways and call AA to add her Advantage # to the reservation. They will be able to tell you if she will earn miles on her ticket.
