I was watching some vlogs on youtube and saw a video of a family receiving a disney cruise line tote with eye patches, a notebook, a photo album and more, it was clear in the video that it was a free goodie left in their room. Is this something they give out on the ships?

No, not normally but they do randomly select a family of the cruise and that family usually gets some free goodies. Sometimes a CM will bestow ad "Magical Moment" to a guest which usually is a certificate or maybe a small plate of choc. covered strawberries or something like that.

Unless you mean the return cruiser gift that is left in the room.

Not sure what they were receiving, but, for returning DCL cruisers (Castaway Club members) each room gets a gift. The basic gift is a DCL bag of some sort (generally a beach bag). The add-ons for Gold and Platinum Castaway Club members vary from time to time. Currently it's a silver tervis-style tumbler for Gold, and a choice of treats for Platinum.

On Pirate night everyone gets a bandanna to wear. I believe at one time, eye-patches may have also been given.

on our last cruise on the Wonder this spring, I mentioned to Peter the CD that we enjoyed having him on the Magic the previous year, and he sent over a two DCL totes with some pirate gear (bandana from pirates league, tattoos, stick on jewels, some character autographed photos, and some candy) for my 2 daughters with a nice card welcoming us back on pirate night. on a previous cruise, after they were doing some repair work in the kitchen above our stateroom, they left a character plush for each of my daughters in the room one night. The folks on the DIS refer to this as Pixie Dust I believe.

We had a terrible experience the first night of our cruise. They were doing maintenance work below our cabin in the wee hours of the morning and it woke up our entire family. This was intermittent for several hours. We went to guest services several times that night. The family in the cabin next to us had the same experience. For the rest of the cruise, we'd come to the cabin to freebies...photos, stuffed animals, wine, chocolate covered strawberries, snacks, bottled water. They really made up for the noise and inconvenience.

My sister's cabin had the toilet overflow, twice for no reason in the middle of the night. The first time, they took care of it and cleaned the restroom and left. The 2nd time (next night, about 3 a.m.) the water was actually splashing over the lip in the entry to the bathroom and had soaked the carpet in the entryway. They sent someone from maintenance ( his overalls weren't even snapped shut, lol) They took apart the wall outside of her cabin and found a pipe that had burst. They fixed it, cleaned up and apologized. By this time, both of her girls were moved to our room to sleep.
The next morning, a cast member showed up to escort her to her new room, a veranda on deck 5 (she was in an inside room on deck 2!) The cast member opened the door and motioned her arm like she was showing the next prize on the price is right, haha. On the bed were stuffed animals, fancy rice crispy treats, chocolates, 2 Disney Barbies, a tote bag and some other stuff. They really went overboard with the apology but it was a nice surprise for her and her daughters and it made me feel better because we had talked her into taking this "magical, once in a lifetime" vacation and then this happened. She has since completed her 3rd cruise and is planning her next.

I'm guessing that this was something their travel agent may have sent them. DCL no longer allows companies to deliver these goodies to be sent to the cabins. If you desire some "surprise" in your cabin, your only choice is to order something from the DCL gifts and amenities.

During our Med cruise a couple years ago, we were chosen by the Guest Services team to be their Magical Family. We came back to our cabin each day to find snacks, gifts and notes. On the last night, we went up to our cabin to find one of the pictures taken by their photographer on Pirate Night in a mat signed by all the characters. It was awesome - no doubt!

After our engagement we became one of the guest services' magical families. We had gotten engaged on board almost a year after a precious fantasy cruise. Some of the staff even remembered us and asked if we would do a Fantasy wedding haha. so On top of all that the proposal didn't exactly go perfect (I had no clue but my fiancé told me later) when a CM refused to go get the plate of strawberries/ring and champagne because the Super Bowl was on. Another CM saved the day but was so embarrassed he sent us a free bottle of champagne. Then the service crew leader was so upset over the whole thing that he sent us something too! Again I had no clue and I know no one in my party complained but I guess the CM who saved the day told his boss and it started a chain reaction of apologies. We had way too much champaign by the end of that cruise.

Yes, this might have just been a pixie dust kind of thing.

This last trip, my teenage daughter dropped a glass in the bathroom and cut her hand pretty good - we couldn't get the bleeding to stop and eventually went to the onboard medical center where she got treated and bandaged. She had to keep it dry, so no swimming on Castaway Cay! Disney later left a couple of journals and pens in our room, which was really nice of them (especially considering they hadn't done anything wrong). They didn't ever really say it was due to the accident, but I got that impression, and it was a nice touch. But, definitely not something to expect.

On my first cruise, I had something in my room just about every time that I came back to it. I booked with DVC points and it was the Dream's 3rd sailing. So, maybe that is why we always had stuff. Most of it was junk, like stickers, etc, but we also got some nice lanyards and some beach bag type things. On my cruise in May, I don't think we ever got anything.

When staying concierge, you may get some extra goodies, like arcade cards, popcorn, etc. We sailed concierge on the Magic last summer and my son got sick. The concierge team showed up at our door with a big Mickey Mouse for him. On another Magic cruise, water seeped in through our balcony onto our carpet. Maintenance dried it up and that night we found some special sheets and a stuffed animal on the bed for our son. So, pixie dust happens occasionally (plus Castaway Cay members get welcome gifts), but for totes filled with merchandise, it's typically a stateroom gift ordered and paid for prior to the cruise.
