Flynn Rider leaving Tangled M&G 07/03 ???

I have to ask...how many little boys actually watched 'Tangled'?? I'm not trying to be argumentative here, but seriously? 'Tangled' is aimed at preteen and teen girls...especially preteen girls.

I guess our family is different than most. I enjoy movies aimed at "boys/men" and "girls/women". So does my husband. Not every single one mind you, but the majority. ;) And I like to read a variety of literature (fiction, factual, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, thrillers, suspense, romance).

I plan on my kids growing up realizing they can enjoy a variety of books/tv/movies - not just those aimed at their gender.

I loved The Princess & the Frog and Tangled as they had male characters fully involved & fleshed out in their own right, right from the beginning. Not like Disney movies of old where the male hero/prince is added almost as an "after thought".

And I really like that Disney and other movie makers have finally made "family movies" REALLY "family movies". The ones of old, while good, seriously failed to appeal to many parents I feel. I know my parents did not want to watch "kids" movies with us most of the time, but did. Now, movie makers are really making an attempt to reach out to the whole family. And in most cases have added adult humour that just flies above kids heads.

On the flip side, TV shows like Ben 10 and Avatar: the last airbender are aimed more at boys, no? My daughter (and I) like to watch these just as much as my husband & son.

I wonder if the real issue has to do with who buys the most Disney merchandise.

Girls young enough to enjoy Fantasyland and characters will often get dolls and Disney princess related merchandise for Christmas gifts.

Boys? I have 2 words. Video. Games.

So I'm not REALLY surprised by this. I'm sure some little boys got Flynn merchandise. But I would also imagine those sales were completely DWARFED by the sale of girls merchandise from the movie.

I just find it so humorous in light of their attempt to try and be so boy friendly in the whole FL expansion.

But you can't buy Tangled merchandise because it's not available anywhere. People have been trying to get the plush Pascal for months and he's never available (thank goodness I just got one on ebay at the beginning of the hype!). I searched over 4 parks to find pins, and finally found a set at the toy store in Germany. There is nothing of Flynn except a couple dolls and a pen. We bought the pen but it has gone missing. :sad2:

I haven't read all of the post but it saddens me that they will take away the princes!

I don't think the only things boys are into are video games , but the fact is that the only time it seems to be ok that they can be rough and tough and have it acceptable is in a video game atmosphere.

The only thing Disney really has to offer to boys are Cars, Toy Story, Pirates and Star Wars.

I'm not saying the only thing they are into is video games. I'm saying the vast majority of the gift giving dollar for boys at Christmas and on birthdays is video games. Disney doesn't care what they DO as much as what they BUY.

True and agree.

I buy my Dh a videogame every birthday and Christmas. It's just being a guy I think. I do believe that Disney could do more for boys I just don't know how. Glad I have a girl though! I can't imagine trying to go to Disney with a boy in the "girls are yucky" stage.

What is Disney trying to say about the male role or lack there of in the parks? I think it's sad that they are removing the princes. It just seems like such a bad thing to do. :confused3

Not so different than my family!!! We all enjoy many types of film and lit. Why, even my dh liked 'Tangled' much to his amazement!
My point is.....the vast majority of boys are just not all that interested in anything with a princess in it. I know my ds wasn't. He was all about the superheros and villains...no matter how hard I tried to 'soften' him up!!

My dd, 17, is a huge 'Tangled' fan.....but do you think she was able to find a Pascal anywhere in April?? Nope, nothing to be found. Actually, very little 'Tangled' merchandise was available. Disney knows what sells. I wish they would leave the characters as is.....who knows, maybe something will happen and they will be back.

I do know that when my dd heads to WDW next year, with her two friends, for their graduation trip...they were so looking forward to having a photo with Naveen...something about a comment he makes about 'a redhead on one side, a brunette on the other'...dd is a redhead, her friend a brunette..the third one wanted to take the photo. But now??? Who knows.

'Tangled' is aimed at preteen and teen girls...especially preteen girls. And the meet and greets for Rapunzel and Flynn??? Again those girls and yes, their mothers.

I have to respectfully disagree. Both of my DD's LOVE R&F. They're 4 1/2 and almost 3. We saw Tanlged on the opening day in theaters, which was DD4's birthday. We met R&F twice during our last visit. Flynn and DH spoke for a pretty good bit. Neither R nor F asked ME any questions or made small talk. I'm *not* complaining, only trying to point out that I don't think these characters are aimed at that age group and their moms. :goodvibes

This is why I really wish Star Wars M&G's were more common outside of SWW's, which for those in our area are very difficult to attend, unless you're going to take kids out of school. And a Star Wars character meal would be huge. I would think it would quickly rank in the top-5 hardest to obtain ADRs.

DHS is where we do the majority of our character M&G's. CARS, Incredibles, Buzz & Woody, Monsters, and usually the current movie in the animation building (we skipped Pooh).

Sooo agree with this! My DS6 would absolutely love having more characters to meet. There's no way we could go during SWW as that is our busy season with our business, but that's the only time they could see their favorites - Luke, Ashoka, ObiWan, etc. I think it would have been great to add this with the new Star Tours redo!!

As far as boys watching Tangled - my DS6 watched it at least 3 times in the theatres. We bought it when it was released and they've watched it plenty since then. It's not just my DD4 who loved it, they both did. I know for a fact he would have loved to meet Flynn, and if it were possible Maximus and Pascal too!

I think what Disney forgets when it comes to cutting characters...is that they are the one thing that can always make a trip extra special. In 7 trips to WDW, every time we ride Dumbo, it's the same (ok, that will change a bit soon lol. When we ride Teacups - same. Watch a parade - yep, usually same. But I can get in line to meet a character (especially a TALKING, face character) and have a different experience every single time. So that keeps you coming back for more.
It's that extra bit of magic that the cm's (characters especially) do for the guests that create the most memories.

I am very sad they are getting rid of Flynn because everyone enjoys meeting him. :sad2: I know lots of people wish it was a rumor... but it's not unfortunately. No more meet and greet with Flynn.... just Rapunzel all by her lonesome. Their line is always ridiculously long though so I can imagine this will help cut the line down hopefully!

Well said. I hope that TPTB actually read these boards. I hope you copy your post into an email & send it to Disney.

My DD just saw that a South Florida news station had a story about the huge push on Facebook to save Flynn Rider. She didn't have any more details than that.
We have writen to Disney and haven't gotten a reply back yet. I will post it if and when we do get a reply.

The thing that will help the most is an email, they might look at the facebook group but they won't take it too seriously. So make sure to email!

I agree, emails are best! But if the page is growing fast enough that it has gotten local media attention, well that can't hurt. :thumbsup2

I was so looking forward to this meet and greet when we arrive in September! My 2 boys love Flynn as does my daughter. When we went Feb 2010 Naveen and Tiana were by far the best character interaction we had. I thought for sure that Flynn and Rapunzel would be just as good or better! We were going to make sure and ask him what was in his bag too! I am just so bummed that Disney is taking away the fun :confused3

My sons friend was really good friends with Flynn (if you know what I mean wink, wink) and he came home for a vacation. Well I talked with him tonight and it's official Flynn will be leaving WDW. He said he might return for a parade sometimes but that's it. He wasnt given any reason why either. He was really bummed about it because when he returns to MK his clothes will be a little warmer.
