Flying Fish ~ Catch this one Hook, Line and DESSERT

Chef Anthony's second choice for us during our culinary adventure at The Flying Fish was:

“A Study in Plant City Strawberries”
flying-fish02.jpg

Strawberry Gelato Crumble Sundae/ Orange-Strawberry Torta/ Fromage Blanc, Banana and Strawberry

STUDY IS RIGHT!

OMG!

I already told how we CRASHED the Fish and had a brief wait to be seated at the grill counter. So while we're waiting, we were seated at the bar. [I'll do a sidebar about the bar in a different posting.] Of course, what's between the bar and the grill counter, but the passage way to the kitchen. And what do you suppose is going on the entire time we're sitting there waiting. YUP! The DESSERTS kept going by my face.

UGH! THE PAIN! THE TORTURE! THE CONFLICTS IN LIFE!

I studied EVERY DESSERT that went by my face. From the first viewing, I just knew I had to have the strawberries. Who cares if there was studying involved, I was ready for the exam!

Then there was the Chocolate! But what about the wonderful looking nut DESSERT with the scoop of interesting looking ice cream? What about the Foo Foo looking one in the martini glass with the cookies?

You have to also remember, we'd told Jay to have Chef Anthony send out what he considered his best and what he was most proud to serve. Well, I remembered it was Holy Week, so I immediately began praying that one would be the strawberries. With an almost full (there's ALWAY room for DESSERT) belly, and knots of anticipation, I fell back on the religious beliefs of my childhood and did a lap around the beads.

:worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship:

TA DA ... THANK YOU GOD!

The Strawberries were placed in front of ME!

OK ... SO ... "THE WAIT"

After greeting us at the door, Raul escorted us over to the bar to wait for the guests at the counter to finish their DESSERTS. Mister Disney ordered a Chocolate Raspberry Martini and I ordered a Double ... uhm ... Double Diet ... Coke.

Shortly after tasting our perfectly prepared drinks, a cell phone went off, so each of us jumped for our phones. RUTT ROO ... it was Mister Disney's Boss. Without skipping a beat, Mister Disney went outside where it was quieter.

Moments go by ... moments and moments go by ... DESSERTS keeping going by ... LOTS OF DESSERTS KEEP GOING BY ... Alone, I'm sitting there Jonesing like a junkie on my first day out of rehab ... one of the kitchen staff in a white coat was picking up ALL of this ... he kept giving me the EYE and then EYE BROW as he carried things past me. OH THE TORTURE!

Suddenly, the tension was broken, albeit it briefly, but it was broken. One of the head hostesses brought over a gentlemen to sit at the bar. She seated him in Mister Disney's seat, in front of his Chocolate Martini. I quietly mentioned that someone was sitting there. She said the seat looked empty. Well, of course it was empty, Mister Disney was outside on the phone! :lmao: I commended her on her observation, but told her how my partner was sitting there. The gentleman and hostess both looked at me very perplexed. At that point, I looked at both of them, because afterall, I was NOT fibbing to them, and told them it's fine if he wants to sit there, but there's something they needed to know. I told them that my partner was outside and when he returns, if he sees me sitting with another man, one of us was going to be in trouble! :dance3: :rotfl2: :dance3: Guess who moved ... and how fast! ROFLMAO

Sensing even more tension in me, the guy in the white coat whispered to me on one of this trips back to the kitchen, "looks like you've been abandoned".

UGH! I sucked down the rest of my Double, and ordered another one!

Never being one to pass up the opportunity to try out liquor flights, I noticed that Flying Fish offered a very reasonably priced "Dessert Wine Flight", shown here.
flying-fish04.jpg

Alas, I can't for the life of me remember exactly what was on it, but surfice it to say....a nice ending to a delicious meal!
I did not know that FF has a dessert wine flight. Dessert / sweet wines are really the only wines I like to drink, (I'm very picky with wine,) and this is something I'd be interested in trying.

and NO it was not Robert Iger!

BWAHHHHAHAHAHA!! :rotfl2:

And the entire time, Prof. Von Drake was completely unaware of the drama unfolding in the restaurant. I would have loved to have seen how speedy that man moved, too. And to add insult to injury, you've been served by that white coat guy, but not in the way you should have been. ;)

I probably would have replied, "Who in their right mind would just leave a perfectly good chocolate martini???"

OK ... SO ... "THE WAIT"

UGH! I sucked down the rest of my Double, and ordered another one!

THE WAIT ... Continued

Well, it really didn't continue because as soon as I placed my order, Mister Disney came back and sat down. One look at Mister Disney, muscle bear that he is, the skinny little businessman who tried taking his seat sucked down his scotch on the rocks. The tension was finally "snapped" for me. Can't tell you how the businessman was feeling! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Before I could explain what had happened and why I was chuckling, Raul came over to tell us our seats were ready at the counter grill. We picked up our drinks and walked across to the other counter. Seemingly back on track, we sat to begin our wonderful meal.

RING, RING, RING .... Mister Disney's phone went off again, and out he went... AGAIN! No problem, at least it was clear there was someone sitting with me and even clearer that in order for me to see the DESSERTS, I'd have to turn my entire body around. I'll admit, I had my moments and did turn from time to time. The guy in the white coat was preying on my renewed tensions. I waited until he was out on the floor delivering to sneak a peek back into the kitchen. Turned and with my foot possessively on Mister Disney's stool my fixation on the kitchen was broken by the man in the white coat as he came up from behind me and whispered "looks like you've been abandomed again".

OK ... ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

At this point, my Tourettes kicked in and in a split second reaction, I patted the seat to Mister Disney's stool and suggested that the guy in the white coat sit down and keep me company! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

As I was saying it, Mister Disney in his deep Santa Claus voice said from behind "what did you just say".

At this point, I saw the white coat bolt out to the kitchen and just burst out laughing, and told Mister Disney to sit down, shut off his cell phone and I explained it all. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

WAIT ... should I have titled this posting THE WAITER? :dance3:

WAIT ... should I have titled this posting THE WAITER? :dance3:

OK ... the WAIT is over ... the WAITER ... well I don't think he'll ever get over it ... and the businessman may not either ... Let's get back to DESSERT!

OK......so.....by this point we were FULL, and left to go walk about Epcot during Illuminations.....even though we REALLY wanted more desserts.....

So guess what????

the next night, we decided to CRASH Flying Fish again, but this time, just for drinks and dessert!

So...we get to Flying Fish, without a reservation and we beg our way into a couple of seats at the bar....the same seats we sat at the night before.

I of course, not being one to pass up a delicious drink, ordered yet ANOTHER chocolate rasberry martini.

equal parts stoli vanilla, godiva chocolate liquor and chambord....SHAKEN, not stirred.....

:drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1

THERE'S ALWAYS ROOM FOR DESSERT!

Once again, we were warmly greeted by Raul Herrara who asked if we were back for a late dinner. Patting our (big) bellies, we thanked Raul and told him we were just coming from Illuminations and were just having DESSERT and drinks. Raul smiled, remembering how last year we crashed the Yatchsman Steakhouse just for DESSERT and drinks. That was our first of many very memorable experiences with him. The Flying Fish has a wonderful and valuable asset in Raul Hererra.

(Big) Bellies up to the Bar, our beautiful bartender remembered us from the night before (wonder if she remembers the businessman) and asked if we would be having the same, repeating in every detail what we had the night before.

What a great way to end the evening .... DESSERT!

So now....for our second series of desserts from Flying Fish in just as many days.....

I ordered the
Warm Molasses-laced Pecan Tart
flying-fish05.jpg

Praline Ice Cream, Maple Anglaise

Oh course Kevin could not have ANY of this sumptous tart....as he is HIGHLY allergic to Pecans.....and well....I just wasn't sure the insurance was paid up yet! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

The molasses twist on this pecan tart was interesting. I have never thought about using molasses, but it actually was a great combination in cutting the "sweetness" of the pecan tart. You know what I mean? I mean....sometimes pecan pie can be SOOOO sweet, it makes your teeth hurt. :jumping1:

This was great, I felt that the molasses added a savory tone to the tart, which normally is very sweet.
the Praline Ice Cream? YUM.....remember, I don't like gelato, because the texture thing....but ice cream.....me being a Breyer's Ice Cream sorta guy....mmmm Flying Fish's praline Ice cream was nice and smooth....

OH ... INSURANCE!

Well ... I thought I'd be taking Mister Disney to the ER this night as the ice cream was actually Ginger Praline ice cream, which I absolutely LOVE! Mister Disney kept saying how "hot" the ice cream was. :scared:  From where I was sitting, there seemed to be a lot more going on in Mister Disney's mouth than just the savory taste of the pecan tart! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Since we were in the no share mode ... once again, I was left Jonesing at the Bar and all I could do was quietly hum the tune "Disco Inferno". :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

So...not knowing FULLY the extent of the situation the night prior while I was on on the phone...and not knowing how the K-Man felt about some of the desserts coming out, I ordered for him (cause he likes me to order for us).....

“The Year of a Million Dreams” Pineapple, Passion Fruit & Coconut Panna Cotta

Mint-laced Salsita Tropicale & Coconut Tuile Petit Macaroons Francois

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Lets just leave that as my comment on this....maybe Kevin has something to add about the Foo Foo looking one in the martini glass with the cookies?

Gosh, how soon I forgot how HOT that ice cream was....at first I keep thinking....holy smokes this ice cream has pepper in it....but then after Kevin and I spoke it was the ginger....

honestly, not that my mind is clearing.....someone was just a little heavy handed with the ginger....less ginger...more praline please!

I've never heard of ginger in praline icecream before....now, I wonder if someone put the wrong ice cream on it.....mmmm....

When I last ate at FF the dessert for the YOMD was a cappacino panna cotta, it's interesting that they would change it. Your's looks good too though.

Oh! I've been waiting for another review from you two. You guys are hilarious. Unfortunately, my twins just woke up from their nap. Don't those kids know momma needs to read some food porn?

Can't wait to read more . . . .

Now my buffalo chicken in a whole wheat pita and pretzels just doesn't taste the same after seeing those 2 desserts!

Mister Disney, Mister Disney, Mister Disney ... we need to be careful that readers don't take my Foo Foo comment out of context and confuse it with FI FI.

There's a distinct difference between the fabulously presented Foo Foo DESSERT that so much looks like a Million Dreams in a Martini Glass, and the long ago departed FI FI, pictured below.

So I'm sitting there listening to the smoke detectors going off in Mister Disney's mouth and thoroughly enjoying the FOO FOO Panna Cotta. It's consistency was very thick, right up there with Cheese Cake. The flavors were tropical, nicely balanced, not sweet, not sour. I was expecting something different in the macaroons. I'd never had a French macaroon before... not even at Bistro de Paris. They were more like a merangue cookie and once I realized the difference truly savored them.

This DESSERT was a wonderful finish to the night and definitely complimented the meal we had earlier in the evening.
