We were in a new Kohl's shopping center yesterday, and on the parking lot in mumerous places(and also on signs in the lot) was painted 'NO FIRE OUTRIGGERS' in yellow. With the words, there were 2 solid lines(approx 10 feet apart) running all the way across the parking lot. Does anyone have any idea what this is or means??? :confused3

My husband said that the "arms" that come out of the sides of the fire engines to stabalize them are called outriggers.

For some reason, they can't be used in that space.

HTH

good question....I have never heard of that! I hope you get an answer from someone, I am curious about it myself!

Asked DH, he said thet're the stabilizers that come out from the side of the ladder trucks. Ground may be too soft to use them there.

could also be the location of plumbing or electrical utility piping etc, that could be crushed by the rigs weight,,,,those trucks have big footprint, and weigh a lot,, if there is a utility tunnel there, the truck could collapse the tunnel and over turn.

AHA!!! I bet that's it! I know that at least in one palce by the signs, there was grating on the ground. Looked like there were probably utilirties underneath. THANK YOU!!!!!!

Froggyin Ark is correct. They are warning signs for the fire department that any ladder truck should not be set up in that location.
I'm a driver in my department and assigned to the ladder truck. When we set up our truck to use the ladder we need to have solid ground for the outriggers or stabilizers. Our ladder has four outriggers on it and if one was to be on soft ground or some type of street grate the results would be terrible.
The whole ladder truck may tip over completely.
The reason the sign is there is because the town fire company may not have it's own ladder truck and may use another towns ladder so, that company may not know of the road grates.
