I am near PA and had a friend bring them to a meeting.

Are you going to tell us what they are or should we now go ahead and google?

And if it is anything like the paczki do not post pics - I'm on a diet ;)

They aren't common where I live now, but we had fasnachts in the Buffalo, NY area. (Or at least my mom knew where to get them...)

I'm the first "I think I might but I'm not sure" vote.

I Googled to confirm (I was right) but won't post pics out of respect for dieters. :)

For those wanting a hint, it does have something to do with this coming Tuesday!

(Oh, and I live in Massachusetts, but I grew up in Western New York, near the Pennsylvania border. So it may still count as regional knowledge.)

I had to google it. I lived in the Philadelphia suburbs for more than 10 years in my 20's to 30's but have no recollection of the word. I definitely remember scrapple, though.

I know about them because I lived in PA. Now I live down south and no one knows what they are (well unless they transferred from PA like I did. :-)) I may actually be able to have one tomorrow. A coworker (who did transfer :P) said she might make some to bring in. YUM!

I was always told they were a PA Dutch thing so unless you knew about PA Dutch then you wouldn't know what they were.

I live in Hershey, PA...so definitely know what they are! I already have my order placed for pick up tomorrow from The Filling Station in palmyra! I got a dozen glazed and a dozen sugar. I love paczki too (with custard), but only one store in my area carries them (Weiss), but I will be picking those up also!

We're practically neighbors.

From Wikipedia

Fastnacht Day is an annual Pennsylvania Dutch celebration that falls on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. The word translates to "Fast Night" in English. The tradition is to eat the very best foods, which are part of the German tradition, and lots of it, before the Lenten fast. Fastnachts (pronounced fost-nokts in German) are doughnuts. There are three types of Fastnachts, one made with yeast, one made with baking powder, and one made with potatoes and yeast. All are slightly crispy on the outside and not as sweet as standard doughnuts.

I voted "Think I might know" and I was right!:cool1: I have no business eating this type of stuff and I don't think I can get it anywhere near me, tempting as it is. Then to top it off DGD comes over and eats HALF of her donut, leaving the other half taunting me.;)
