Family of 5; First Time DDP - At WDW Now!!! 4/1/09 to 4/10/09

We liked them, but we couldn't figure out what was inside them (exactly) - do you know?

Re: the churro. They're just fried dough, so it's the consistency of the bread in the middle, unless they've changed them since I had one last.

Boma sounded very good--dd was looking at pictures with me and when I showed her the fried oreos, she actually said "Eww, gross!" What is wrong with my child? :rotfl:

Looking forward to the next review!

Thanks to those joining in, and for being so nice - as this is my first time at this.;)

So we woke up early today and headed to MK. We were fortunate to hit all the big stuff, and were all hungry by 11:00am. Originally, I was trying to plan our meals by 2 criteria - 1) Finding some different things for my kids to eat off of the kids menu and 2) Tryin to maximize my value on the DDP. So for MK, I had planned on going to Cosmic Rays. However, we were hungry and Cosmic Ray's was on the other side of the park. So, we decided to peak into a place I had read about, but had not tried yet; Pecos Bill's. There on the menu was something I hadn't had yet in the 6 days at WDW - a burger:banana:. As a matter of fact, all 5 of us felt like a good ole burger, and this place rocks for that:thumbsup2. I had the double cheeseburger, DW and DS18 had the single cheeseburger with bacon, and DS9 and DD7 both had burgers as well. Here are some pics of the place. First, for those that said they liked menu boards - here you go:
018-1.jpg

019.jpg

020-1.jpg

The cool thing about Pecos Bill's is the fixin's bar. Here is how it is set up:
023-1.jpg

At the ends are shredded lettuce and tomato:
024.jpg

And in the middle they have pump machines with ketchup, mayo and mustard, plus onions and mushrooms - oh and liquid cheese:
021.jpg

022-1.jpg

And here is a pic of DW's burger, ready to be eaten:
015-2.jpg

And one of DS9 enjoying his:
016-2.jpg

And for the 3 adults, we all went with carrot cake for dessert:
025.jpg

So if you are in the mood for a burger, this is a good place to go. They meet one of my favorite burger qualifications - small bun - lots of meat. Of course, this is WDW, so it is not a gourmet burger like the one I had a Bobby Flay's place, Mesa Grill a few weeks ago. But for that quick burger fix, with some fixin's - Pecos Bill's will do. And Donald agrees:
014-1.jpg

So if we paid OOP, it would have run $53.45. On the DDP, it was 5 CS credits.

Next will be snacks - and my most anticipated dinner - Le Celier. Ressies are at 5:45 so I got to run. I'll check in later.

There's nothing quite like a Bobby Flay Mesa Burger, huh? I still dream about that one! Enjoying your report...thanks!

Great review. Thank you for taking the time during your vacation. We really liked the banana bread pudding from Main St. Bakery. Was it still good? Enjoy the rest of your vacation.

Ahhh - onto Boma.

So coming off of my not so hot buffet experience at Cape May, I was concerned about another buffet, this time Boma. Well I must tell you, this was probably one of the best buffets I have ever eaten at - ever!!!:worship:

We took the 5 minute bus ride over from AK to the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Boma and Jiko are downstairs on the 1st floor. I checked in, and we waited about 5 minutes before being called. Here is a pic of the entrance sign and the price list:
072.jpg

073.jpg

I really was looking forward to taking a bunch of photos of all of the food stations - but for some reason, with the lighting, pictures were not looking so good:confused3 so I canned that idea (sorry everyone - everything looked really good in person). So here are some food picks from our plates, starting with DD. She had lots of different fruit, chicken nuggets, fries and mac n cheese - which she had 2 servings of the mac!!:
074.jpg

Here is DS9's first of 3 plates. Starting at the top and going clockwise - lots of fruit, a taste of watermelon rind salad, salmon, and calamari salad:
075.jpg

Next is my plate. Starting with the beef in the middle and working clockwise - And BTW, I must say, this was tremendous beef, and probably the best I have had in a buffet setting. Extremely well cooked and seasoned (they offered medium and medium-rare) plus multiple sauces for the pork and beef - I went with Sambal - I like a little spice. Fufu - which seemed to be a blend of potato and sweet potato, excellent. Calamari salad. Watermelon rind salad - nice and crunchy. Potato. And finally pork shoulder - another item that was well cooked and delicious!!:
077.jpg

I also had a coconut seafood curry - excellent as well. Those are mussell shells you see sticking out there:
078.jpg

I feel really bad about the other pictures not coming out, as I tried about 10 other things and they were all great!! They had several salads, 3 or 4 other soups, lots of fruit, and starch items like cous cous, mashed potato, etc. plus some unique items - like one that I can't remember the name, but sort of looked like blocks of tofu in red sauce, but tasted like grits. Here is a picture of the layout from my table, which was the very first one on the right when you walk in:
081.jpg

Here is a shot of just some of the desserts:
080.jpg

And of course, they had bread pudding:hug: and peach cobbler, which is on the left:
079.jpg

I can not say enough good things about Boma. Our server Jose checked on us every 5 minutes, even if it was to look and see if we needed plates removed. Great service, more than friendly greeters and chef staff - especially over at the meat station. So many options, even picky eaters will be fine, and adventurous ones will enjoy the different tastes and textures. I wish I had a Boma close to my house, as I would love to go here again - soon!! One note of caution - go to Boma when you are hungry - too much good food here:woohoo:!

Now the math:teacher: - If we paid OOP, it would have cost us $139.47. On the DDP, we used 3 adult TS credits and 2 kid TS credits. I also asked if they did smoothies here on the DDP, and they said no, Again, maybe they just allow them at Le Cellier. Anyone know???

So the math for the day breaks down like this:teacher:. If we paid OOP for lunch, snacks and dinner, we would have paid $216.94. On the DDP, we have our regular $141.95 plus $4.04 for the onion rings at lunch; which brings the total to $145.99.

On tap for dinner tomorrow we have ADR's at Teppan Edo:yay:.

You have sold me on Boma...I had doubts before...but the food looks awesome!

just found your dining report and read all of it so far to catch up...great reviews enjoy the rest of your trip and thanks for taking time out to give the rest of us our disney fix:)

I wish we could have hopped back over - but today was one of the most crowded I have seen any park. To give you an idea, on the bus ride over to AK - the bus driver said to us that we are lucky we chose AK over MK, because the line of the road to get into MK was more than a mile backed up and would take over an hour to get there:scared1:. At some point, they probably had to cut off admission.

Enjoying the reviews and all the pictures. We did WDW during Easter week once when our spring break coincided over 10 years ago. The crowds kept getting larger toward the end of the week. If you weren't going in the same direction as the masses, it took forever to get from one attraction to the next.

Re: the churro. They're just fried dough, so it's the consistency of the bread in the middle, unless they've changed them since I had one last.

I read the OP as he was wondering what was in the Zebra domes.

Hi Whogirl'sMom - I think a few items got mixed up here - I was asking what was inside the Zebra Dome at Boma - and was making a joke about people not knowing what a Churro was. Being from California, you pretty much see churros at a lot of different places, so it is more common probably than most places in the country. I appreciate the help anyway:thumbsup2

There's nothing quite like a Bobby Flay Mesa Burger, huh? I still dream about that one! Enjoying your report...thanks!

Oohhh sooo gooood!!!!:worship: I wish I had one of his restaurants closer to home. It was decadent!!

Yes it was - warm and a bit of gooeyness (I'm sure that's not a word, but you know what I mean). Ahh - bread pudding:hug:

Welcome to those joining in...we are having lots of fun this trip - and it has been more relaxing since we are here for 10 days, so if we don't get to something, then we will get it tomorrow. Today is our last full day here, and our official end of the DDP (well I guess we could use it tomorrow if we had carry over, but we won't). On to yesterday's eating.

Yesterday (Wednesday) was very cold - low was 41 degrees. Keep in mind 2 things; a few days ago it was 90 degrees with 90% humidity - and we are from CA, where 41 is a winter low for us. So we headed out early (about 7:00) to AK to get in front of some of the crowds, and get on some rides. The cold had gotten to all of us, as we just didn't bring proper clothes to handle the cold first thing in the morning. By 10:00, DW was looking for some coffee, and the kids wanted a snack. So we stopped off at Dino-Bites again. We had a few extra snack credits we had not used, so we used 5 snack credits for this stop. DD ordered a Churro and DS9, DS18 and DW all ordered a cheese danish. In my frozen state, I forgot to get pics - but the danish was thick and was filling.

If we paid OOP - it would have cost us $12.09. On the DDP, we used 5 snack credits. We of course could have done better money wise on the snacks, but we are getting close to the end here so I just wanted to use them up.

On to lunch. Around Noon, we were still cold having just rode Expedition Everest for the 2nd time, and wanted to warm up with some food. We stopped right at the Yak & Yeti Local Foods Cafe. This is located right next to the entrance to the Yak & Yeti restaurant. Here is a menu pic:
094.jpg

First let me say that this was the best CS lunch we have had since we have been here. I am not sure if it was the fact that we were so cold, and the food was so hot - but whatever it was, it was very good!!! DS18 and I ordered the Beef. Here is a pic of how they come:
092.jpg

090-1.jpg

Underneath all of that beefy goodness was steamed rice - all of it served up nice and hot. We added some hot sauce and proceeded to devour it all. The beef was very tender, and for this type of basic Asian food, it was much better here than Sunshine Seasons, and I liked the food there too. DW went with the Shrimp Lo Mein:
091-1.jpg

DD got the chicken nuggets with fried rice and carrots - she ate it all:
087-1.jpg

DS9 ordered the pork egg roll. Now I assumed that it would only come with one egg roll, but I was wrong, it came with 2 of them, plus fried rice and applesauce:
086-1.jpg

Since I was concerned that DS9's meal would be too small, I used a snack credit to get an extra egg roll. I must say that I wish there were more places that offered snacks like this, instead of just the sweets or popcorn etc - pretty decent egg roll:
089-1.jpg

For dessert, we ordered a chocolate cake, mango pie, and a chocolate chip cookie. I tried to set it up hidden mickey style for you:
088.jpg

So all in all, this place was really good:woohoo: and I was surprised by it. If we would have paid OOP, it would have cost us $68.03. On the DDP, we used 5 CS credits and 1 snack credit for the egg roll.

I would recommend this place if you are looking for some good food - especially on a cold day.

Great reviews! We jsut came back last week :sad2: and did a few of the same places!

We also had the same server/waiter at Ohana's! :goodvibes

Glad you enjoyed Yak and Yeti! We ate there in Oct. and really enjoyed it. :thumbsup2

Another good thing from there is that they allowed the fried rice as a snack. I got this for my DS and it was plenty for a light meal, and was very tasty!

Hope you enjoy your last few days! :flower3:

I just read the whole 12 pages of your FABULOUS reviews!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to update everyday. :worship:

I am subbing so I can read the last few. Have a great last day. :wizard:

I'm so glad you liked Boma. We have eaten here 2 years in a row for dinner & for our trip next month we are trying breakfast so I was very glad to PP's saying how good breakfast is. We LOVE Boma!! So enjoying this report!!

Hi all - sorry I am a bit behind with the updates, but we had a really long day yesterday and i crashed when we got back to the room so I couldn't get to the dinner update - but here goes. Nice to see some more folks joined in - glad you could join us on our vacation:thumbsup2.

So I left off we had finished lunch at AK, and spent some more time there on rides and animals. Lots of fun!! Then, we took the bus back to BWV so we could attend the Wednesday DVC meeting. It is like a game show with prizes and jokes and more fun. Then we hurried back and grabbed the kids and headed over to EPCOT for our ressies at Teppan Edo in the Japan Pavilion.

When you come up the stairs here and enter the restaurant, there is a greeter stand at the top. I thought I was in the wrong place as there was not a teppan grill in sight, just tables with folks enjoying their meals. When i checked in and inquired, the hostess let me know that the restaurant there was Tokyo Dining, and Teppan Edo was behind me down the hall. We were asked to take a seat and about 10 minutes later were called into Teppan Edo with another family of 3, so 8 of us filled the grill area. Here is a pic that DD7 took while playing around with my camera, but it came out pretty good:
015-3.jpg

The dining area is broken down into several rooms, each with 4 teppan grills in them. For whatever reason, all of the servers had a trainee with them and were training them on everything. Here is a pic of ours:
013-2.jpg

I have been to many teppan grill places, so for me, they are all about the same. What makes one better than another one is the chef, the overall atmosphere, and the folks you are eating with at the grill. Unfortunately for me, this place lacked 2 of the 3, at least at the time we were there (the family we ate with were nice people). First the atmosphere - in our room, it was pretty quiet. Usually, these types of places are more up beat. I think a lot of this has to do with the layout as everyone is so close together, and you are watching 3 other chefs cooking while you are waiting on your chef - so some of the mystique is taken out of the chef's show when they show up at you table.

Next, our chef was either inexperienced, or was just having a bad night. She was friendly, but was not great, and actually made a mistake with just about every trick she tried. Here is her pic:
002-2.jpg

She was nice to the kids, but I saw other chefs at other grills who had the kids more involved in the show and made it more fun for them. My kids enjoyed it, but DS9 pointed out all her mistakes as he just finished watching a really good chef at the grill next to ours. I think it would have been different, for instance, if we would of had the chef next to us instead.

Now onto the food. They start by giving you some dipping sauces for your meat:
004.jpg

For an entrée, you get to pick from chicken, shrimp, scallops, filet mignon, veggies and some combinations. As an example, the shrimp and the scallops were both priced at $23.95. The sirloin-shrimp combo was priced at $29.95. I asked the server if I could have sirloin and scallops, since the scallops and shrimp were the same price. She said no - I could only add scallops for $10 more. I thought that was odd, so I just went with the filet mignon (I like this pic because you can see the steam coming off the food):
010-1.jpg

And here it is with mushrooms:
012-2.jpg

All the meals come with some veggies, noodles and white steamed rice. Here is a picture of the onion volcano (there is a Disney twist she did on this - which I won't give away so it will be a surprise if you go):
006-2.jpg

And some more of the grilling:
007-2.jpg

Here is one of my daughters chicken kid's meal:
011-1.jpg

DW and DS18 both got the large shrimp, but I guess I didn't get a good photo of theirs (sorry). DS18 also ordered a sushi combo which had a few pieces of sushi and 2 pieces of California roll - missed the pic of that one too - but we paid OOP for that appetizer.

For dessert, the kids had fruit cup (the kind that goes into their lunches) and was the only dessert for kids. DS18 had ice cream:
018-3.jpg

DW had chocolate ginger cake - which was good, and was really just chocolate cake with a hint of ginger:
020-3.jpg

I had the surprise dessert of the night and went with green tea pudding - which was excellent - very creamy!! I had read other reviews where they hated it, so maybe it was just me, but the whole family tried it and liked it:
021-2.jpg

For drinks, the 3 adults all had hot tea - and they also offered a complimentary hot tea after the meal.

So to sum it up, the food was decent, the chef so-so, the atmosphere was a little strange - too much explaining of things by the servers, etc. So, if you haven't been to a Teppan Grill before, you will probably enjoy this place - especially the kids, because of the chef show - they will think it is cool:thumbsup2. If you have been to one before, then I would say this is a place you could skip. I actually preferred my CS lunch at Yak & Yeti over Teppan Edo.

Please keep in mind that I have eaten at several Teppan places in the past, so I am jaded - but my family has not, and they noticed the difference at our table vs some of the other chefs. However, a different chef would have upped the fun, but the food is still the same basic food. If you do go, try the pudding:hug:.

Now for the math:teacher:. If we paid OOP, Teppan Edo would have cost us $149.74. On the DDP, we used 3 adult TS credits and 2 child TS credits, plus we paid $10.12 OOP for the sushi sampler.

After dinner, I decided I wanted some more of that great school bread to bring back to the room. I used one snack credit for that - if I paid OOP, it would have cost $2.12.

So now, the math for the day:teacher:. Lunch, dinner and snacks, if paid OOP, would have cost me $231.98. On the DDP, it cost us 141.95 as usual, plus $10.12 for the appetizer at Teppan Edo for a grand total of $152.07. saving $80 on the day is not a bad thing:woohoo:

This will probably be my last post until I get home this weekend. I have to start packing and tomorrow we will be out of our room after the AM, so I will update the final day and final totals and thoughts when I get back home.

Those that have been following know that I went to Tutto Italia tonight for dinner - but you didn't know that we had lunch at 2 different places - and I have some surprises there for you as well, so stay tuned - plus, what will we do with those left over snack credits:confused3.

Thanks for hanging with us - and we are sad to leave tomorrow. However, we will still enjoy our last day as our flight is not until the evening. Bye for now...

Great reviews!

I am been looking forward to hearing about your Teppan Edo review since you wrote you were dining there. We have ADRs there in July. It was my only ADR that I was not too excited about and was debating changing. I am definitely going to change now! (not b/c the restaurant sounded horrible but b/c I was thinking that since we have been several times to a Japanese Steak House, this would not be exciting to us) So thanks for your honest opinion.

Have a great rest of your trip and ride home!
