Facebook Banned from DIS!

Been following this for a couple of days. Dis and Facebooks groups are so different. While a majority of the groups on FB are run by agencies there are a handful that are not. Disney Cruising Facebook Group and Disney Cruise Line Facebook Group are the largest out there and neither are travel agent groups. They are basically fan pages. Maybe some agency could buy their membership.... The issue is all tied to revenue IMHO.

So this is kind of interesting - I tried to pull up the "Disney Cruising" Facebook page that I mentioned before & it is now nowhere to be found.
I tried to pull it up I can't lol, I like they other one better either way just found it odd it disappeared lol

I agree about Disney Cruise Line Facebook Group being a fan site, but Disney Cruising Facebook Group appears to be an agent/agents. See joius24's post above (#159)

Way to go DIS. I back your decision! It irks my you know what when the FE was originated here way back in 2005 on the first PC cruise and now FB groups have taken the idea and not given credit where credit is due. One FB group was started by a person and she has now taken over cruise meet threads even if she is not on the cruise. I have had the best meets here on the DIS.

Anyone that thinks that FB posters are always real people are delusional. Yes, there are a few here that create more than one profile but the same with FB. I know of two people that have been kicked out of FB meet groups by the admin of the group by suggesting something that the admin didn't want to put up for a vote. It is up to one or two people in those groups to take charge and take charge some do. I've known others that were not admitted in the group.

I have no issue with the policy. DIS is a for profit board and they make money from the number of eyeballs that are here. Facebook is also a for profit board.
They are also free to make their own rules.
We are free to chose if we wish to use either board.

:thumbsup2

I have no issue with a private company making rules to limit links to others, it's business... now how I or you use the service is up to each individual for personal reasons not worth trying to convince anyone why one is better than the other, why all the personnel call outs. Which is why I personally think a lot of people prefer FB for things b/c you're less likely to attack others opinions without the veil of anonymity like a site like this has... can others create dummy accounts sure, but then you don't have to interact with them either... you can block users from showing up in your feeds... it's all about options...

But to the point that the the reason against FB being that the concept to link up cruisers on a social network before a sailing may or may not have originated here - doesn't make sense... it's like the quote: "A guy who makes a nice chair doesn't owe money to everyone who has ever built a chair" Does Disboards need to credit the first ever internet board on every post?Disney didn't invent cruising, they just improved it...

No, but when the "guy who makes the nicer chair" comes into the other chairbuilder's store trying to sell his "newer & nicer" chairs, no one should be surprised when the "guy who makes the nicer chair" gets thrown out & told to go sell his own chairs in his own store.

No one is trying to sell things on the cruise meet page though. It is simply a place that the cruise meet people can get together and talk freely..I have referred many people to the sponsors of this site because they saw my pictures of my room with the gift basket on another site. When they PM'd me, I told them about the gift basket as well as OBC from the sponsor that they were not getting from their TA's.. MANY switched because of this.. (And yes, my TA can back this up.)

Would you mind sending me a link to it in a PM when you get a chance - I seriously can't find it again.

To take the anology even further, can you imagine if people started posting links to the DISBoards meet page on the "disney cruising" Facebook page? I bet the be deleted from the Facebook page faster than you could say Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.

So I just had my wife check for the "disney cruising" FB page using her FB account, and she found it in two seconds.

Its like I got banned/blocked from that page, but I've never posted a single word over there. A cruiser from one of my previous disboard cruise meets had added me to the page months ago :confused3

I'm sorry...just saw your post this morning. So, you cannot even access the page??? Now that's just weird!

You do know that the FE quickly spread after that 2005 cruise to other message boards when people left the DIS, for one reason or the other, right? It's crazy to say that the FB groups got the idea strictly from the DIS.

I read her comment, but it is not correct. It is a fan page and is not sponsored by an agency.
It is my understanding that the Disney Cruising Facebook Group was created by Mark Kechula, who IS a TA (lists himself as a Disney Cruise Vacation Consultant). In any case, he is still an admin for the group. I don't know if the other admins are also TAs. The group does not have to be sponsored, as it's a free group on Facebook.

Sorry to burst your bubble but everything you post here does the same.. You must not realize how easy it is to found out things by just a name search.. Trip reports? Yep... It makes it even easier... EVERYTHING, as you say.. It is the internet even on the DIS...
SO TRUE! THIS was the only place I posted for years!! When I registered I used my 'real' information not realizing at the time (because i was not that tech savy!) that it could be searched so easily. Well guess what!! Through some Google searches of my name my posts on the Dis popped up and someone who was looking for me found me! They started reading the Dis and we're able to match up my screen name based on their Google searches! Creepy! So don't think you have total anonymity here. Nope you don't!

This board is not user friendly. I am a new cruiser, just returned today from fantasy 7 day western august 30th. Joined Facebook page for the same cruise because it was user friendly to communicate. :(

I wouldn't necessarily say that it's not user friendly, just not the same as a small intimate FB group. I don't feel like I can get to know anyone on here like I have on my FB groups for different trips. But this place is still a plethora of information, for which I appreciate being able to go to to get questions answered.

I guess if we continue to have FB groups for trips or FEs, then we will just have to use PMs more often to relay information...

I think this is totally funny!

No one has said you cannot use FB! There are some, myself included who have chosen not to and the reason is none of your business!

You are entitled to your opinion about social media and FB in particular - but please stop belittling those of us for what ever reason decide not to use it.

I can say that I personally find it confusing and cannot figure out how to find information I want there - and I DO NOT want to learn!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like DISboards because it is Disney information! If I want to have a meet thread here for my cruise I think I'm entitled to that and the FB enthusiasts should respect that and leave it alone instead of hi-jacking and inviting everyone the the FB group for the sailing - sorry I want to be part of a smaller community where everyone has the DISboards in common.

Quite trying to compare - FB and DISboards are not the same type of media! And quite trying to make me feel like I'm uneducated because I chose not to use FB! Go ahead if you want to! If it is so much better than DISboards - WHY ARE YOU HERE? Just trying to drum up more members?
No they are not the same. FB IS WAY BETTER for meets because you can Actually organize information into categories! And I don't have to weed through crap loads of stupid comments back and forth that technically don't belong on the forums if you read the rules! If it doesn't pertain to the group it should be sent by PM. I don't care to have to scroll through pages and pages of postings about your weather and other non sensical stuff. And one of our cruises we had 180+ pages of this crap amongst a handful of families! They called their group the parrot heads I believe and then shortly before the cruise, they jumped ship. It was a pain how they monopolize everything and this stuff should have been sent through email or pm. It was evident they were all already personal friends. SMH! But they felt compelled to have to expose the rest of us to all of their personal garbage. Ugh!

I feel the same way. I do not have FB and it is because of my job. I enjoy reading Disboards and helping others when I can. For my next cruise we have a great group on both.

I understand that is an issue for some. But even with super high security clearances for the Government, people can create fake accounts to participate. But it is all about personal choices and I respect that. :) but please don't act like you absolutely cannot.

Listen, do whatever you want. Stay only on the Dis. Resist Facebook for all you're worth. Stubbornly cleave to the old way of doing things and refuse progress. That's fine. Who cares?

Just know that on my upcoming cruise (23 days!!) we have:

170 active members in our FB group
120 people participating in FE (divided into smaller groups)
2 meet-n-greets on embarkation day (one in D-Lounge!)
2 Private Mixology Classes with 26 people each
A Beer Exchange with 20 people participating
A Christmas Ornament Exchange
And a photo scavenger hunt

We're having pre-cruise meet-ups the day before at MK, MNSSHP, DTD and Fishlips

We have shared 204 photos privately with only our group, and uploaded 18 files including recent Navigators and an Excel spreadsheet for the FE.

So basically, it's YOU that are missing out! Not us. I only need the Dis for info and answers to questions, and it is WONDERFUL for that! My main source of accurate info! But for a cruise meet or an FE? Nope. Don't need the Dis, at all!

Did a member here get banned? I thought the powers-that-be just disconnected the links.
Yes! I have known members that were banned! Certain forums have mods that run dictatorships! Say the wrong thing and you get points. It is ridiculous!!

Well, I will use both....NBD. I have had great experiences from using both. My one gripe, not for the meet pages but the DCL FB topic pages, is that I do find the TA 's are like sharks... They prey on a newb the minute someone asks a question. One FB page did ban TAs from direct solicitation.....so a few TAs went off and started their own page called... Ready? "Disney Cruising" LOL. I never requested to join that one ;) In reality though..... This site technically has a monopoly .... DU has everyone's attention LOL.

I love the "Disney Cruise line" page whose admin is Rebecca. She tries to keep it a nice environment. Of course like all social media places there are rude, augmentative and troubled people but I have found them in both places. I think ultimately the The DIS will lose out on this one. I have directed many people here for resources, feedback and graphics... I will continue to do so. But I will also actively participate in FB meets and groups and their ban will not deter me...there are a million ways to work around this stuff!

I have never regretted meeting all of the people I've met on the DIS meets/FB. Groups. In fact meeting one in a few weeks for the TOT 1/2 marathon events! Our second MOMS only Disney weekend ( we did princess 5k last feb) ... We met via meet groups for our Alaskan cruise in 2013.
I hope they reconsider their position... But either way I'm gonna "let it go" LOL!

Disney Cruising FB page is not owned or sponsored by an agency. Please get your facts correct.
Also I find Nastier more argumentative people on Disney Cruise Line page than on the Disney Cruising page. Disney Cruising has over 16,000 members and Disney Cruise Line has 12,000. There is less drama on Disney Cruising and it has 25% more members!! Hmmmm.... ;)

HE is one of the creators. Yes, he is a TA. But his agency does not sponsor the site. The other creator has no affiliation to the travel industry. The bulk of the admins are not TAs either. :)

Sounds like an unfortunate group that soured you. I wish you could've experienced a DisMeet group like we had for the May 2012 Magic sailing we went on. It was soooooo wonderful in every way.

"FB is WAY BETTER"....definitely a matter of opinion and personal experience. Hasn't been mine. I've organized a rather large group of ladies in the past (27 actually) by utilizing a forum format, not FB. We've gone to FB currently because we got shut out of the forum we were on (nasty TA drama that we got caught in the cross-fire so I definitely feel the sting of perceived censorship). I can tell you right now we're not a fraction as active or chatty on FB as we were on the forum format. A well-organized group who gets along can easily keep info organized so it's easy to find right on the first thread page (by reserving the first several posts as future planning space). If there's some specific piece of info someone needs it's easily accessible because the latest most up to date group info is right where it's always been. That's what we did and worked very well. FE spreadsheet was kept on a Google doc which everyone on the list had a link to. Again, worked very well. I personally find FB cumbersome and confusing. I'm no techie. I'm a busy homeschooling mom. I don't have time to fool with it too much. I just utilize it to access the group of friends for now. Hopefully we'll be shifting to another forum format in another place soon! We ARE working on that!

Yeah, it's not that I cannot do FB groups. I just don't enjoy FB. Part of me doesn't like feeling THAT connected. Like when I get the friend requests from various family members it's a total eye-roll moment. If I don't accept then someone will think I'm a jerk. But I really don't want to be THAT connected with anyone other than my husband and kids. Only one of the 3 even has a FB account and that's my 16 yro. I kinda already know his daily life as he knows mine. We're together most of the time. ((homeschool fun!)) It's like FB, in a way, is socially demanding which makes me feel awkward. I live a long way from all of my family. I like the distance. It's really hard to explain.

I don't feel left behind. I feel like I've made my choices based on my needs and what I'm comfortable with. Like I mentioned, FB is awkward for me. I'm not at all comfortable with it. If anything, I feel like NOT following the rest of the world onto FB shows that I think for myself rather than follow mindlessly like a sheep.

Yes! I have known members that were banned! Certain forums have mods that run dictatorships! Say the wrong thing and you get points. It is ridiculous!!

Really? Banned for posting a FB link here?

I definitely have felt the sting of mods on forums before. Even HERE several years back when I didn't bow down and kiss the tushie of a very well-known Disney info site owner who's team was very ugly to me when I tried to offer assistance. I didn't mince words nor was I unpleasant. But the mod in that area here on Dis was all about petting this well-known person and obviously me being nobody notable I was the expendable one. My posts got all edited or deleted and I got fussed at. Whatever. Water under the bridge. Was it right? No. But like I've said before, this is a business not a democracy. The owners own it, we do not. If we don't like it we are more than welcome to go elsewhere. The powers-that-be will do what they want with their website. I think about the times in my life where someone wanted to tell me what to do with something that was mine...didn't go over well. Ya know? Just on that principle, I don't take sides either way.

FB people will FB. Fantastic for them.

Dis people who don't enjoy FB want to use the Disboards. Fantastic for them.

The owners will do what they want with their website which is entirely their right. Fair enough.

I'm just here. No malice either way.

I have family members on my side who I am not FB friends with at all...and some that I am friends with that have limited access...and some that have full regular access. And then there is my husband's side! I am not FB friends with any of them! LOL not even his parents. They treat him poorly and me worse! So why would I be your friend on FB??

I definitely don't feel like a sheeple for using FB. I make informed decisions! I will Not install messenger on my phone because I will not allow an application to have that kind of access to my info. I even went back and rechecked other applications to double check what I had allow ed and agreed to. I find FB had educated me and brought many situations especially local ones to my attention better than any other source! There is power in numbers when people share!

I know people who got banned for voicing an opinion. Yes it's a business but apply your business practices equitably across the board! That doesn't happen here. Some people get in trouble while others don't. I take issue when they censor some and not all...That is BAD business practice. My opinion....

Exactly...I do research extremely well and I easily could find anyone on here if it came to that.. Google is your search friend.. Have pictures on your trip report? Google Image search is your search friend... I am just surprised as to how the few here that think that posting on a private FB page is worse.. So not the case.. At least somewhere private it is only for those people, as opposed to a place for anyone to see.
