Aaah!! Now I think the nail has been hit on the head with those two comments! Money and control.

Well sure. Its a business. Of course they'll closely guard themselves & their name. That's what businesses do. Disney does it on many levels in many ways. Doesn't vilify them.

Disney doesn't kick you out of the parks if you talk about Universal (a competitor) though ;)

Today? I don't know. But you can mention certain travel agents, websites, etc. and get banned really quick.

They star out the names of TAs and various sites. Especially on the cruise board if you want to mention a TA you need to put the whole URL, so it's obvious that it is or isn't able to be mentioned.

If you ARE a TA and you're mentioning yourself, you can get banned. If you keep on trying to make clever ways to link back and avoid the filters, sure.

But just making a post that includes a starred out name, because you didn't know, isn't going to cause that to happen. Not really quick, at least.

It depends on *which* name/website it is how quickly you will get banned lol

I personally like the FB pages and Disboards. Never did FB pages slow my usage of the Disboards. Not having a cruise lined up does though.:faint:

This board is not user friendly. I am a new cruiser, just returned today from fantasy 7 day western august 30th. Joined Facebook page for the same cruise because it was user friendly to communicate. :(

I really find Disboards easier to deal with.

I have used the DIS for many years, AND I have a facebook page and I do utilize the cruise groups for my cruises there also. I prefer the DIS for the more "intimate" feeling. I am not looking to converse with 120+ people who are going to be on the cruise. I prefer to have contact with a smaller group. I have made "cruise" friends thru the DIS cruise meets. I have yet to make a connection with anyone that I have run across on the Facebook groups. The facebook pages seem to be more confusing, personality wise - different people who want to be "in charge" of various aspects. Pages that split because someone doesn't like someone on the other page, each starting multiple FE groups and no one knows were they should be with regard to that. I personally had never experienced a split in a DIS cruise group because someone didn't like someone else. Unfortunately, it seems that once a facebook page is started for a cruise, the DIS page is left in the dust with no one posting there, or if they do a Facebooker points them away from the DIS and onto the FB page. So, I do miss the DIS cruise pages.

My $.02

We're really talking about 3 groups/things

1. The disboards/cruise meet threads - clearly owned by dreams unlimited. Its been around for years, & many of us call it home for all things disney.

2. The facebook meet pages - In their purest form, I really don't have a problem with them. Many people use facebook on a daily basis & some like the convenience of only keeping up with one social media. (We run into this same debate in our neighborhood - "nextdoor" site vs. the neighborhood Facebook page). When I first noticed them popping up, it seemed like just an organic offshoot of your individual cruise-meet thread. Mostly started by disboard members taking their individual cruise-meet thread to the next level. Maybe even as a way to avoid disboard rules on discussing certain topics - not really sure - and really doesn't bother me if they did.

3. The Disney Cruising facebook page - This is where I feel things get a little murky. Its basically a facebook page set up in the model of a facebook version of the disboard's Disney Cruise section. Also, if boiled down to its purest form, I'm not sure most folks wouldn't have a problem it. However it appears to be started & run by a travel agent just like disboards, but not as openly as the disboards is run by DU. They have just as many, if not more, rules than the disboards. (I've seen posts get deleted so fast your head would spin - they call it "poof")

They list the facebook meet threads & discuss fish extenders & door decorations. Not that disboards has a patent on those things or anything, but I could see some bad-blood watching them get co-opted on a competitor travel agent's site.

Long story even longer, I can really see both sides of the arguement. The traditions of the meets, fish extenders, door decorating all started here on the disboards. Not everyone does facebook so some feel left out, but for the people on facebook many find it more convenient than disboards since they get on facebook everyday anyway (LOL). Add the tie-in to the disney cruising facebook page - which is run by a travel agent competitor to dreams unlimited - and I could see why they wouldn't want the facebook pages promoted on disboards

So this is kind of interesting - I tried to pull up the "Disney Cruising" Facebook page that I mentioned before & it is now nowhere to be found.

It's still there. Just saw your analogy and never thought about that before. Interesting.

Would you mind sending me a link to it in a PM when you get a chance - I seriously can't find it again.

To take the anology even further, can you imagine if people started posting links to the DISBoards meet page on the "disney cruising" Facebook page? I bet the be deleted from the Facebook page faster than you could say Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.

Well, I will use both....NBD. I have had great experiences from using both. My one gripe, not for the meet pages but the DCL FB topic pages, is that I do find the TA 's are like sharks... They prey on a newb the minute someone asks a question. One FB page did ban TAs from direct solicitation.....so a few TAs went off and started their own page called... Ready? "Disney Cruising" LOL. I never requested to join that one ;) In reality though..... This site technically has a monopoly .... DU has everyone's attention LOL.

I love the "Disney Cruise line" page whose admin is Rebecca. She tries to keep it a nice environment. Of course like all social media places there are rude, augmentative and troubled people but I have found them in both places. I think ultimately the The DIS will lose out on this one. I have directed many people here for resources, feedback and graphics... I will continue to do so. But I will also actively participate in FB meets and groups and their ban will not deter me...there are a million ways to work around this stuff!

I have never regretted meeting all of the people I've met on the DIS meets/FB. Groups. In fact meeting one in a few weeks for the TOT 1/2 marathon events! Our second MOMS only Disney weekend ( we did princess 5k last feb) ... We met via meet groups for our Alaskan cruise in 2013.
I hope they reconsider their position... But either way I'm gonna "let it go" LOL!

So I just had my wife check for the "disney cruising" FB page using her FB account, and she found it in two seconds.

Its like I got banned/blocked from that page, but I've never posted a single word over there. A cruiser from one of my previous disboard cruise meets had added me to the page months ago :confused3
