Dunkin Donuts gift cards

I bought DH one for xmas, a $25.00 one.

All the DD's in our area have signs "sorry..not accepting GC's at this time" and when he asks why, the reply "we're not set up for them yet".

I'm really disgusted with them. They shouldn't have taken anyone's money for them at these locations until they were ready to receive them or should have offered me the paper kind they used to have.

Also, my DH had to get upset with the employee at the drive thru because he said whenever there is change due to him, they automatically throw the coins in their cup and give him back only the dollars!! He said when it was a dime or two he didn't care, but thought about all the money he's giving away for nothing...they are not to expect a gratuity as a server in a restaurant would. It boils me.

Anyone else having an issue with these in you're area?

That's craziness!!!

The GC. I'd get my money back. And they would know I wasn't happy.

The coin business. Assuming too much. They'd try that one time with me. Just once and they would remember not to do it again.

I'd find another doughnut place.

I agree that they shouldn't have taken your money if they weren't set up to take the card. That would irritate me, too.

A little OT, but I also noticed your comment about them not giving the full change back. That has become one of my new pet peeves in restaurants lately. If you are due any change (i.e. coins), the waiter/waitress doesn't give it to you. My way of addressing this is to reduce the tip I was going to give them by the amount of change that they kept. I mean, not if it's something like 10 cents, but much more than that and I make the adjustment. It's just the principle of thing. As far as "tipping" at Dunkin Donuts, I think the whole service industry has gone tip crazy. I see those stupid tip jars everywhere now.

Wow! I must have really wanted to get this off of my chest - LOL!

Good luck with the Dunkin Donuts!

The only problem with gc's that I've encountered is the locations inside of Stop & Shops don't accept them.

Izzy - I'm actually a server in a NE chain restaurant and agree with you wholeheartedly. I am never to assume you don't want the change and I make sure to give back every penny and if I don't have the pennies, I round UP. (We have to make our own change)

Ocean Annie - there are no refunds we're told. I still have my receipt somewhere, maybe I'll go see a mgr on duty one of these days...

Lorix2 - you sound like my kind of server!!! May all of your tips be 20% and higher!!!!

Hate to sound harsh, but as far as I'm concerned if I have change due to me -and I don't care if it's only a nickel - and the "server" keeps it and throws it in their cup without my permission, that's theft and I would ask to speak with a manager about it..

Wonder how they would feel if the customer behaved in such a manner.. Let's say my order came to $1.75 and I gave them $1 and drove away.. The police would probably be on my tail before I got a half-mile down the road..

wow i am glad i was smart and instead of the card i bought people the paper gift certificates. they come in books of $5 $10 $20 etc.. noone has told me they have had problems with them yet..

I agree! Next time you don't get change, say, "Excuse me...I think I'm short some change. I didn't short you when I paid my bill." The look on the face should be priceless! I agree, it's theft! As for the GC, is there a toll free number on the back you can call and complain?? Some GC start debiting the card "x" amount of cents/dollars per month if not used. Don't want to see your GC value decrease because they aren't prepared to accept it! Call BBB or the news media!! Maybe the embarrassment alone will light a fire under their bums! Good luck....keep us posted! :wizard:

::yes:: ::yes::

And/or go to their website and register a complaint about the GC and the automatic tip. That should get some results!

Good luck and keep us posted!!

Is the whole gift card thing at DD new??? Maybe thats why they're having trouble? When we went to get some for my uncle, who loves their coffee (which makes him a traitor since my aunt works for Starbucks ;) ) they only had the little paper gift certificates.

Also, if somebody were to pocket my change without asking, I definitely agree that's stealing :guilty:

You are so right. :guilty:

You should complain to their corporate HQ and ask for your money back.

Wow....I had no idea that these people are actually expecting a tip for a $2.00 cup of coffee and a donut. When did this all happen?

I've seen the tip jars pop up everywhere and I just wonder why these companies allow it in the first place?

I would definitely complain. If no manager is on duty when you're there, then call at another time. You don't have to go out of your way to correct their mistake. They should give you all of your money back for that GC. I know you're not normally allowed to return them, but if they don't work, it's their fault--not yours.

The change thing would irritate me, too. That's just wrong. As others have mentioned, it's stealing. I wonder if they do that to police officers? (And no, I'm not trying to do some joke about policemen and doughnuts, LOL.)

I hate dunkin donuts and I will never go there ever.

I totally agree!!

And, that is total BS about the gift cards. They can sell them but they can't redeem them? Ridiculous.

I worked in a dunkin donuts for 2 years in high school, and we were allowed to get tips. however, we did not just take the money like the situation the OP described, we obviously gave the customers their change. It was nice spending money though, i usually got $5 - 7 in tips on a weekday and $10 - 20 on a sat. or sunday morning. plus, that's with 3-4 other people on with me. i guess people in my town were just generous. i did have a lot of people's coffee memorized though.
