I was wondering if it is mandatory that if you are assigned a room, do you have to go to a assigned post or can you just make sure you attend. only because my niece is on another floor with my friend and wants to attend the drill with us instead. What are the rules???

You must go to your ASSIGNED location!
It really does not take that long IF everyone shows up on time!

you have to go to your assigned post but dont worry it only takes 15 min or so

Each section has a "roll call" for that section/life boat. That is WHY you must attend your assigned location.

In the event of an actual emergency everyone needs to be at their assigned locations because there is only so much room in each lifeboat. I can understand wanting your party to be together in this situation, but the overriding principle is the safety of all.
