Door Decorations

Try the disc size magnets (Joannes or Michaels.) I brought my mini hot glue gun on the cruise (emergency) and they worked like a charm. They're heavy duty, but everything stays in place. I love having decor on the cabin doors but on out last Disney cruise a few folk took our decorations and placed them on their doors. so next cruise no decorations. So rude!!!

I use normal printer paper and laminate them at work (teacher). You don't need a fancy machine, though. I've used the laminating sheets that are self adhesive and they work just as well. Last year I bought the more powerful magnets at Michaels. They work fantastic but be advised that they are thicker than normal magnet discs and your image may stick out more than be flush with the door. It takes more effort to remove from the door, so that might discourage other passengers with "sticky fingers".

I print on photo paper, cut out the image, and then put that on the big magnetic sheets I buy at Michael's. Then cut them out again. Only magnets I've had issues with staying on the door were my small mickey head magnets on the Wonder. I would often find them slid down the door, or even on the floor directly below. I think it was a combination of multiple paint layers, and the smaller magnet area holding them to the door.

The larger magnets stayed on the door fine.

@PrincessShmoo - what's the largest thing you've printed and hung on your door?

I was over-eager and I have a couple of large pieces (one barely fits in my suitcase). I know I'll have to plaster the back of it with mag. sheets, but I wondered if the size and weight will affect it staying in place.

A full page (8 1/2 X 11). Or a bit more - I think the Mickey ears pirate hat I printed was slightly larger.

I found with the magnetic sheets that they tend to have enough weight themselves that is why they tend to move or slide. I don't necessarily think that they repaint the doors to all the staterooms that much to build up a that many layers of paint, nor do I suspect that during the Wonder's dry dock stripping every single stateroom door was a priority at that time. I would not count on them being any different paint thickness wise than before the dry dock. I do suspect that the strength of the magnetic "sheet" is dependent on the manufacturer adhering enough of the mineral that gives it it's magnetic quality to make it hold to a metal surface. I've found that many of the magnetic sheet's that are sold online often have significant complaints about their adhesion ability to things like appliances or other metal surfaces. That coupled with the cost of the magnetic sheets in the first place, and the potential if you have a issue printing a sheet and it doesn't come out like you want it to, it's just wasting one for the purpose, has steered me to printing the door decorations out on heavy card stock and laminating them. Then attaching self adhesive magnetic squares to the back my method for stateroom door decorations.

I absolutely think the amount of paint on the door has something to do with it. I tend to bring many of the same decorations each cruise and never have problems on the Fantasy and Dream but always have trouble on the Magic/Wonder. I don't use magnetic sheets but print out my designs on photo paper and cut self stick magnets (from the roll) on the back. I never laminate. I have a special case to keep them all in when traveling so they don't get damaged.

Did you make the magnets yourself? If so do you mind telling me where you found the file to download and print? I love the option to change the mickey ears on the door!

I'm just wondering how much ink it takes to make these! I was going to try to use a circle cutter and make my own with construction paper first...

I'm such a spaz I think I need a video or something--- or is it really just as easy as printing out a color copy, laminating it, and hot gluing it to a magnet? Because I can manage that. how much are magnetic sheets at Michaels? Last cruise I meant to bring our car magnets so my kids would know which door was ours, but since I clearly forget that sort of thing I need to make special Disney ones for the trip. Thanks!

If you want to make them yourself, get the originals and then print the outline, so you have a 'template' for cutting. Most printers have a 'coloring page' setting.
