...nobody ever wore seatbelts? I remember them well. I actually remember STANDING UP in the car as a small child.

Boy, things sure have changed. Probably for the better.;)

I'm from a large family, when we traveled my parents would put a mattress in the back of the station wagon and we'd pile in. I can't even imagine doing that with kids now. Thankfully we never had a serious accident.

Yes riding in the back of the station wagon was very common. I remember snoozing back there all the way to Florida a few times myself.;)

Sure do. Cars just didn't have seatbelts when I was little. But my dad's next car had them although we didn't seem to wear them much. I remember laying down across the back seat sleeping on trips to my grandparents.

Do you remember when...

you could play outside until dusk without your parents calling? We used to go down the street to the post office building and play with a tennis racket and ball on the back wall. When it started getting dark and the street lights came on, we knew it was time to go home. Who would let their kids do that now? :earseek:

I remember those times, too. I'd be sitting in the front seat and my mom'd have to slam on the brakes--she'd put her arm out in front of me to try to keep from being shot forward (like the "he stopped short" move from Seinfeld!).

I was in a car accident when I was 20 where my car was flipped up in the air and rolled over. One of the few things I remember about it was the seat belt tightening against me and holding me in my seat. I'm glad times have changed and more people are wearing them. From first hand experience, they can really make a big difference.

I remember doing that too PW and we had seatbelts. Dd is in a booster seat and I NEVER had one of those.

I remember lying down on the back deck of my parents 60-something Cadillac while we would drive around. The warmth of the glass felt good on a cool day.

No, we sure didn't have booster seats. I remember standing in the car when it was moving.

Hey 'cmon... it wasn't all that long ago was it?!? I'm starting to feel old and I'm only 38!!!!

My kids think I am ancient when I talk about 'the old days' of the 70's!!!

I remember not wearing seatbelts, sleeping in the back of the station wagon on long trips south to Nana's house. We would leave in the "wee" hours of the morning, us kids still in our pajamas.

But I also remember my little sister falling out of the car when we were driving, because the door wasn't latched completely and she wasn't belted in.

I fondly remember the station wagon trips to Fl. It was a thrill when it was your turn to get "all the way" in the back to lay down.

Do you remember.....riding bikes or your homemade skateboard (made from an old pair of strap 'em to your sneakers" skates) without helmuts or pads? ahhh the good ole days :teeth:

I remember...

No seatbelts.

Standing up.

Sitting on laps.

Riding in the pickup bed.

Ah, those were the good ol' days...

I remember riding on TOP of the station wagon on the luggage rack. Granted, it was only around the campground and the car never went very fast, but still....

Yep! I cracked a few front windshiels with my head when my mom stopped quickly. Maybe I would have been a genius if there were seatbelts? LOL!!!!!!!!<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_29_132.gif' border=0></a>

I remember:
1) Wrestling with my brothers in the back of our old station wagon.
2) Bikes with no helmets.
3) Staying out til dark.
4) Pulling our wagon to the local mom and pop store to pick up things for my parents.
The thing I remember most: Every road in a 5 mile radius of my parents home being a dirt road. They are all paved now.

I remember going to a family party with my neighbors and they had their baby - maybe 3 months old - in the bassinette on the back seat....How did people travel with babies back in the day?

Not only did we not use the seat belts, but my dad rolled them up and shoved them in between the cushions. Out of sight out of mind. I also slept on the floor of our big old Buick on road trips. It was actually very comfy.

Anyone remember the camper shells that fit in the pick up bed.. the kind that had a bed at the top; looking out over the roof of the pick-up? A great place to lay and watch the road!

And best of all, EVERYONE had a station wagon, so there was no need to make fun of anyone for having one.
