Do you remember when...

Anyone remember the camper shells that fit in the pick up bed.. the kind that had a bed at the top; looking out over the roof of the pick-up? A great place to lay and watch the road!
::yes::

I used to love riding in the rumble seat

I was thinking of another while flying down here the other day. Who remembers being able to smoke on planes.....not so fast there......who remembers before there was a nonsmoking section on planes? You could smoke in any seat.

When I got my first new car in 1965 I ordered the "optional" seat belts (lap only) and my mother had a fit because she thought that made it a "race car!"

I guess I'm old, I do. I don't think my parents would have flown anywhere if they knew they had to put out their cigarette to "move about the cabin".;)

I do too. And I remember when they changed it to international flights only. And I remember when the ashtrays weren't cleaned out and I hated sitting there with that nastiness. People would stick gum in there too..........YUK!!!!

I recall that too, and, optional padded dash, padded steering wheel hub, and padded sun visors.

Yep! When I was younger, I was sitting on the arm rest on the door and actually fell out of the car...apparently my door wasn't closed all of the way! To this day (I'm now 25) I can't get in a car w/o locking the doors. I also remember standing up in the back seat.

we were just talking about stuff like this the other day. I remember going to the corner store with a note from my friends Mom. the note said "please sell my daughter 2 packs of Pall Mall" We never had trouble purchasing them and we were probably only 7 or 8 years old. Of course we always bought the penny candy with the change.

I remember I liked sitting on the hump on the floor of the back seat. I guess I preferred that to getting sandwiched between my two sisters! LOL! Being the youngest, I was ALWAYS stuck in the middle.

Yeah I remember those days, cars never even had seat belts when I was young, my brother & I even used to sleep in the back of the station wagon when we were young.

In '77 DH and I took a trip to Texas with my parents, we took our van and I remember putting our DS's playpen in the middle of the van and that's where he rode (he was 13 months old). No car seats back then. I cringe when I think about it now, and thank God we weren't involved in an accident on that trip.

I certainly do remember laying down in the back of the station wagon on our way to vacation... we got to snuggle between Dad's golf clubs and the cooler!!:p

But this was the best.... when I was a teen my Dad got a pickup truck with a cap on the back. My mom bought a couple of those low folding beach chairs and we sat on those facing backwards in the back of the truck on long car trips!! That is, until Dad took a sharp corner and our chairs tipped over!! THen we would pick ourselves up and start again!! And if we needed to make a potty stop we would have to write a note to the folks and bang on the window separating the cap from the truck cab, trying to get their attention on the note we held up to the window!! AHHH, the good ol' days!......................P

I have seen pictures of me when I was just a baby in the back of my parents car. they put a piece of plywood across the seat all the way to the back of the front seat and then padded it with quilts and pillows. Those were the days. Then as I got older I remember laying across the back seat and reading or napping (my dad snored so not much sleep at night) when we were on long trips.

I remember being able to actually drive and camp out on the beach in my hometown...now you can't do either.

I've got one! I grew up in a very rural area and the only hill that was treeless enough to sled on was about 10 miles from home. One parent, who owned a full-size van, dropped off 11 of us and my dad agreed to pick up. We got everybody in the van by stacking the sleds in the back and sliding them under the seats and doubling everybody up the seat belts. This was the only family that made us us the belts.
My dad shows up to drive us home and what did he bring? The station wagon, my mom, and the FAMILY DOG! What was he thinking?? We stacked as many of the sleds as possible in the very back, put the seat down, and put the rest of them on the floor. The kids sat on top of and around the sleds and the 90 lb dog. I got to sit in the front because I was the oldest and had the longest legs so I spent the ride home laughing at the sardines in the back. I still remember my mother laughing at the strange looks she was getting while we attempted to fit everything in and telling everybody who asked (all the kids were either blond or had brown hair) that yes, they were all hers!

I remember riding in the back of my dad pickup down the highway!

My sister and I did that all the time! We would ride in the back, down the highway from Trenton to my parents home (rural area about 30 minutes away)

you could play outside until dusk without your parents calling? We used to go down the street to the post office building and play with a tennis racket and ball on the back wall. When it started getting dark and the street lights came on, we knew it was time to go home. Who would let their kids do that now? :earseek:
I would. Where are you living, Baghdad?
