Do you have 11/11 off

Our schools are out that day, as well as banks, federal businesses, etc. our city has an annual Veteran's Day parade to honor our Vets. Still a big deal here.

Dh has work. There is no public school that day and I think the private schools in town are also closed that day. Last year a town charter school tried to be open that day but I read something about the state requiring them to be closed on Monday even though Veteran's Day was on a Sunday.

We have a Veteran's Day parade. My 8th grade dd will be marching in the parade for band. My 4th grade daughter may march for girl scouts. My 89 year old father is a WWII vet. He usually goes out to a restaurant with my mother and gets a free meal on Veteran's Day. My niece's fiancé is in the national guard so now the 4 of them tend to go out together. I usually have my kids call grandpa and thank him for his service and we will add my niece's boyfriend this year.

I have always talked to my kids for a few minutes (depending on age) about what are service men/women do for our country.

Our schools are open here. I work for a private college and we are open as well; DH will be working too.

Wow, this is interesting. Is it a public school? That's like an automatic school holiday, the veterans groups here would recall the school board if they had school on Veterans Day. Having said that, it is NOT a holiday at my work or my wife's. But in my industry, holiday is not related to day off.

NJ here and that day has never been a holiday in this area for school.

None of the districts in my area have off for Veteran's Day.

Is Bethlehem Center Unified near you? I just googled Bethlehem PA schools, and the was the first district that came up, and they are taking veterans day off.

Yes everything is closed here. However if it falls on a weekend there is no day off in lieu of it except for government offices.

I find it very distastefull that people are saying 'enjoy your day off". November 11th is suppose to be a somber day where you attend a service to honor the war victims and armed forces. It's not a holiday. :sad2::mad:

I hear what you are saying but it is a very long story and for what it is worth I give the men and women that have serve and have served all the respect they deserve

Here in BC it is a stat holiday and the schools are closed.

When I was growing up in Ontario, they stopped giving Remembrance Day as a day off of school. Instead, the schools held hour-long ceremonies (often quite elaborate and poignant) to commemorate our fallen soldiers.

I would actually prefer that BC adopted this policy. Since the point of the day is 'to remember', I think this is best done through education about the world wars and the sacrifices made by our veterans... not by kids sleeping in and lounging around the house! :)

Yep, I am off - working for the county and schools are closed that day.

Any day people are paid and not required to work is their holiday.
Additionally, there is nothing wrong with enjoying it.

Stat holiday here in NB. All of the schools have a ceremony involving veterans on a regular school day.

Yes! I work in the office at our church, and the Pastor decided to close the office that day, because we're having an all-day staff meeting the following Thursday. DD16 will be out of school that day too. DH is the only one who has to work. :(

I live in Ontario, and think it should be a Stat holiday here too, but I also Manage a restaurant so stat holidays don't mean days off to me....

I personally think the gov't should force all stores and restaurants to stay closed on all stat holidays. (gas stations, and mini mart type stores being the only exception). People who work in the service industry should have the same opportunity to go to Remembrance Day ceremonies (on 11/11) and spend time with their families (like all other stat holidays are intended for).

It's my normal day off however my dad who is a Veteran is getting the day off, he works for a bank and they give all Veterans an optional "thank you" day off if they want to take it. I know my doctors office is open though.

Veterans Day is a day to honor and thank all veterans who have served during war or peace time, with the focus being on the living. It is not necessarily meant to be a sober day, that is what Memorial Day is for.
