Do you have 11/11 off

Up until this year our kids did have it off. This is a first for us.

Our banks and government offices are closed, but EVERYthing else is open, including schools.. They pause at 11:00 in remembrance... I couldn't imagine everything shutting down...

Poppies are out in full force, love seeing them, and what they signify..:thumbsup2

This is similar to the UK we have a minute silence at 11am on the closest Sunday to the 11th November and then again on the 11th November. It is not holiday in the UK everything stays open unlike in France, where it is a public holiday.

Poppies are out full force for memorial day here in May

Yes, very similar to our Remembrance Day!!

:thumbsup2

Yes.

And further we used to be off school for our Remembrance Day. But I think it was the correct decision to stop that and have a moment of silence at school now instead.

Funny enough, I can't remember ever being off. I remember our Veteran's coming to our school, and having talks with them, and then the moment of silence.

Am I older? :rotfl2: ;) - 46. Or maybe different provincial decisions ie. schools. I can't remember the year it stopped here - I believe it was during my high school years but it definitely was off at some point.

But then again, I'm 46 - could be memory issues. ;);)

EDIT: Mommasita, looked into it and it lists 70s and into the early 80s as schools closed in Ontario.

I have to work, but it is no big deal.
DS is off of school.
DH could have taken the day off, but I think he decided to work.

Schools here are all closed. Where I work all the veterans have the day off with pay. At our main terminal they do a ceremony at 10am and anyone that wants to go to it can go.
There are no holidays that we are closed- open 365 days a year 24/7.

That is really nice of them. I don't hear of many places doing things like that.

Dh has to work but my kids are off from school.

The kids are all out of school here. I work in finance and we are open because the NYSE is open. However since the Federal Reserve is closed, we can't really do much. It's a great day to get caught up on those administrative things you keep putting off. We are leaving for our cruise on Thursday though so I won't be there.

There is school here in PA on Veterans Day. With it being a federal holiday I think it is odd. They are having a ceremony on Friday at the middle school, not sure why Friday instead of the real day!

Hubby is a veteran. He will be working. It is his scheduled day. He works almost every holiday. He is a life flight pilot so they never close and there is no divvying of holidays. If it is your regularly scheduled day you just work. I'm pretty used to it but it does still get sad sometimes!

Wow, this is interesting. Is it a public school? That's like an automatic school holiday, the veterans groups here would recall the school board if they had school on Veterans Day.

Having said that, it is NOT a holiday at my work or my wife's.

But in my industry, holiday is not related to day off.

I rode by the local high school this morning and discovered it is closed this entire week. This is apparently the "Jersey Week" which is frequently mentioned on the DIS. The message board outside the school indicates that classes resume next Monday, Veterans Day. It seems that each year more schools are taking an entire week off. Back in the stone age we got the Thursday and Friday off due to the NJ teachers convention, and sometimes Election Day and Veterans Day, depending on how the dates fell on the calendar.

I'm working on Veterans Day. I've never had a job that received that day off as an automatic paid holiday. I could, however, use PTO if I wanted to.

I have it off but that is only because it is on a Monday and I have Mondays off. I just looked at our calendar and none of the school districts in the area have it off. As far as I know, they have never had Veterans Day off in this area.

I'm only 2 years behind you ;)

I'm off, but my wife is working and my kids are in school that day.

We get Veteran's Day and MLK Day off, but not Columbus Day or President's Day. Apparently, years ago, the union here negotiated getting the day after Thanksgiving off instead of having Columbus Day. No idea why we don't get President's Day off?

I'm off. I also get Columbus and MLK Jr. days off. I'm a DoD contractor so we go by federal holidays.

About 10 years ago they started taking President's Day week off instead of just Monday and Thanksgiving week off, instead of just Thursday and Friday.
Both are big weeks for folks to go to Disneyland now.
And every Thursday is a Noon dismissal.

This is very much historical.

The 11th technically marks the end of WWI hostilities. The armistice between the Allies and Germany was signed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918.

In countries that participated extensively in WWI, November 11th is still a big deal. As a PP noted, in UK and the Commonwealth, it is a very solemn day, much more so than even Memorial Day here in America. People wear red poppies in the lead-up to the day, and the events are serious. WWI was supposed to be the War to End All Wars. It was incredibly deadly, and for many people, it seems like it was a war with very little purpose. Casualties for the armies of the British Empire were ten times the WWI casualties for American forces.

In America, WWI has much less resonance for us. For many, then, Veterans Day seems like a second memorial day, with perhaps less import. I don't think anyone's trying to be disrespectful--I think it's about perspective.

This is an excellent post.

It was also asked why Americans do not wear poppies.

The school system does a poor job teaching the students about the military and the many sacrifices by men and women in uniform. The kids will have Veterans Day off without having any understanding why they are off. They are unable to to make a connection between the role of the military throughout U.S. history and the freedoms they enjoy today.

Try this: Next week, ask your student why they had Monday off. If some manage to say it was Veterans Day, ask them what is Veterans Day.

If have gone through this excersize many times. The results are overwhelmingly sad. But I don't leave it at that. I use it as an opportunity to get them thinking about the life they live because of the veterans.

The businesses are open all day in Quebec? Here they don't open until afternoon.

Your schools are open? Wow, nope the school Remembrance Day service will be held on November 7th as they have day off on 8th due to teacher PD day and the 11th is no school due to Remembrance Day and there will be the local service on that day.

It's like a ghost town here on November 11th

I agree, poppies are everywhere!

I'm in the GTA and everything except banks and the post office is open as usual, and always has been as long as I can remember. (I'm 31). Wherever I am I take my moment of silence and when I worked, I refused to help customers in that time. But other than that one minute, life goes on as usual. Where are you?
