Do you have 11/11 off

Nope; regular school day.

Wow, this is interesting. Is it a public school? That's like an automatic school holiday, the veterans groups here would recall the school board if they had school on Veterans Day.

Having said that, it is NOT a holiday at my work or my wife's.

But in my industry, holiday is not related to day off.

Are you a veteran?

if so, thanks for your service.

No. I am not. My point wasn't about military service. My point was that there are many, many service occupations who work every holiday. It's tiresome to be overworked, understaffed, underpaid & unappreciated by even the well meaning souls who bring treats at holiday time to the er & forget the entire hospital behind it. Our chief nursing officer visited the er staff Halloween night & gave out candy, thanked staff for working, etc. We didn't see a single managerial soul on the floor.

Please excuse my grumpiness. I just finished off the third of three 12s in a row. Except the last one was a double, 17.5 hours due to the stinking time change. I'm probably feeling especially unfriendly.

None of the districts in my area have off for Veteran's Day.

yes, well it IS veterans day,

and as a veteran that rarely had that day off, which by the way, was supposed to be a day of remembrance and thanks to our veterans.

I too worked in the public sector many years after my military time, which included time in combat zones. no, I didn't get thanks.

of course, entering a profession that is know up front that includes shift work might be an indicator of working holidays. probably pays a lot better than military pay. I know mine did.

I bet you even get extra pay for working a holiday that commemorates our brave military men and women that did not come back.

thank you for your service, but a bigger thanks to my fellow veterans on that day. (and every other day for that matter.)

Thanks for the attempt to educate me, but I already know what Veteran's Day is.

No, I do not get paid extra.

I live in an area where there are more than half a dozen nursing schools pouring new nurses out every 6 months. We also do not have nurses unions. Our wages are kept low by those factors. It's one of the reasons so many travelers are from our area. They can pay us an hourly rate much like our rates here, plus room plus per diem & travel & still cost the hospitals less than a unionized nurse's wage. We make more than we would have at home. The hospital gets an experienced nurse for less money. I'm wandering way off topic though.

No. If I am scheduled to work that day, the hospital would not close & I would not get a day off.

I never realized this was a 'holiday' anyone had off. To me it's always been one of those days that came and went with little going on except a small bit on the evening news. I probably wouldn't even know when or what it was if it wasn't marked on my calendar. I'm not saying it's not important, I just didn't realize it warranted a day off to some people. Are there places that have actual events or activities for it?

In Canada, Remembrance Day is a pretty big deal.

The students do but it's a teacher work day for us.

Schools here are all closed. Where I work all the veterans have the day off with pay. At our main terminal they do a ceremony at 10am and anyone that wants to go to it can go.
There are no holidays that we are closed- open 365 days a year 24/7.

It federal hoilday which means some government employees, banks, office workers have it off.

Kids have school this year on veterans day here
Dh normal scheduled day off
I will be working my booty off all day

Normal Monday for me. My boss always says that he doesn't have any veterans working for him anyhow, and doesn't see the point. I guess I should hang up my retirement certificate, huh?

Actually, around here, except for federal and state employees, Veteran's Day sort of disappeared once Martin Luther King day became an official holiday. Or that's the excuse, since we don't get MLK day off either.

I work for a large public school district and I have it off. My DH, however, only has the day off when the stock market is closed :(

Not a holiday for DH or I, but DD14 doesn't have school.
At my place of employment, we give up quite a few holidays during the year in order to get the day after thanksgiving and the week between Christmas and New Years off. Our paid holidays are Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Day and as I stated, day after Thanksgiving and the week between Christmas and New Years. If any of those holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday, then we get the Friday before or the Monday after off.
This year I'm taking 2 weeks off at the holidays by using vacation for Dec 23 and Jan 2 and 3.

Given the way Americans tend to hype their Armed Forces, I was amazed when I lived there that Veteran's Day received very little attention. Simply one more Federal holiday for some. Generally ignored.

In the UK (observed on Sunday), and many of the Commonwealth countries like Canada, Australia and New Zealand it is called Remembrance Day. And it is a big deal. Red poppies are sold and worn on lapels by a majority of adults here in Canada, as a sign of remembrance and respect. The day is a Federal statutory holiday, and is also a statutory Provincial one in most of the provinces. Remembrance day ceremonies are held in just about every town and city in the country at 11:00 in the morning, as well as on Parliament Hill, and are attended by representatives of all government levels, serving military, veterans, friends and families, and school children.

There is a small ceremony at school on Veteran's Day, but otherwise, it is a normal day here for pretty much everyone, unless you work for the USPS. It has been that way since I started school in 1981.

Kids off from school, I'm off work. Going to the ceremony at the local veterans memorial, and then taking my Vietnam veteran dad out to lunch!

We get Martin Luther king day- about 10 years ago they started to give it to us, most of us would have rather just gotten an extra personal day. Same with Washington and Lincolns birthdays, I would rather keep Washingtons but have an extra personal day for Lincolns.

No mail so we won't get any orders out, but we'll still be filling them Monday. We don't want to get behind again. We just got caught up from our last vacation. It took 4 weeks!
