Disney World's single biggest tourist market is.....New Jersey?

Northern NJ'er here! (Exit 135)

Taylor Ham OR Pork roll; I use both

SUBS and SPRINKLES!! (Although I do know what a "Hoagie" or "Jimmies' are if someone uses those terms.)

Used to love that Jersey shore, but what happened to all of the good wheels at Seaside Boardwalk?? I'm not liking all those skill games:confused3

And up here, we are JETS fans!! (And Giants fans too, I guess:rolleyes1 )They actually PLAY in NJ (never mind what they are named.)

Never had a clue until I was in college (and had a roommate from Vineland) that some people from NJ actually rooted for the Eagles!!

Shoobie
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A shoobie or shoebie is a person who visits the seashore for a single day, primarily to use the beach and who may also look out of place. Another term used might be 'Benny', usually applying to visitors from New York that travel to the Jersey Shore. Benny is more frequently used in Monmouth County and Ocean County. Shoobies are typically seen in southern New Jersey. The name originates in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s and it has been said that the term is a slang formation of "shoe box" or "shoe boxer" meaning someone who carries his lunch to the beach in such a container.

I understood that the term was in fact from shoe boxes. However, I believe it was because the people from the city used to take the train to the beach for the day and packed their lunches in shoe boxes. Wow! I wonder just how many versions there are of this folklore! :goodvibes And if you're from South Jersey, LBI was the North Jersey beach. Now Ocean City is THE family beach!

Oh no, If LBI is considered "North Jersey Beaches" then what do you consider Spring Lake and Pt. Pleasant area?? :earsgirl:

For me, anything past Seaside/Island Beach State Park were the, "South Jersey Beaches."

I'll take a good game of Skee-Ball anyday.

Hi Poohlvr!

I guess my answer would be...too far away! :goodvibes When I was a kid (late 60's-70's) growing up in Camden County, we always went to Atlantic City, Ocean City or Cape May. I was dating my now DH and about 23 before I even went to LBI! DH is from Burlington County, and LBI was their beach! I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've been north of the Hopewell/Princeton area. I remember thinking that Great Adventure was soooo far away!

I think that No. jersey and So. Jersey should be 2 different states...they couldn't be more different! :rotfl:

I spent the first 23 years as a North Jersey girl (Hudson County) and after falling in love with a South Jersey guy (Burlington County) that I met on LBI I'm amazed at the quirky differences we have. When we started dating and he would come to visit me we would have a northern favorite for breakfast, a hard roll with butter (or Taylor Ham). He used to laugh that the people in South Jersey would send their stale rolls to North Jersey and had convinced them that they were supposed to be that way. I still cant understand the soft mushy rolls down here!

GoN2WDW, you are so right, we still go to Ocean City every summer all the way from VA. I've never even been to VA Beach, it just wouldn't be the shore to us!! And I agree anything above Trenton is North Jersey to me, I never heard of Central Jersey!! By the way I'm from Camden County too :wave2: , Collingswood. We really miss it!! :guilty:

Saying hello from Camden County also. Our next visit to WDW will be to watch the Eagles win the Super Bowl, watching from ESPN! :wave2:

Mmmmm, hard roll with butter . . . . yet another thing that, until very recently, just didn't exist in the Midwest. At least not the ones with the poppyseeds on them . . . And don't even get me started on Spiekermans peasant bread . . . .

Monmouth County girl here (GSP exit 114). No Phillie fans here. Let's go YANKEES!!!!!

Just call me a Benny! I know that if you live "down the shore", the term Benny is meant to be derogatory, but I don't mind at all. We usually frequent Sandy Hook - the family beach -, but also like Sea Bright beach. Oh, and btw, "benny" is an acrostic: b-Bayonne, e-Elizabeth, n-Newark, ny-New York. But these days, anyone in the suburbs of these cities is considered a benny.

I never realized how crazy we NJ'ers were- I seriously thought i was the only one in the world who was obsessed with THE WORLD- let alone NJ

Checkin' in from Morris County!

Seriously, I heard that something like 20% of Florida residents (excluding the Miami area) have Jersey roots.

There are so many transplants and snowbirds! Almost every family I know has a "Florida Outpost".
We have a family wedding in WDW coming up, and half of the guests are already down there!

I grew up in Cherry Hill, my parents still live there (I'm hoping to one day return if housing prices ever level off). We spent every weekend every summer when I was a kid in Wildwood. I have so many fond memories of that, but now I think I prefer OC. It's just seems more family oriented, Wildwood is a party town. I know it always has been, but it didn't seem as bad when I was a kid (maybe it's because I was a kid and didn't know). I still like to go there for day trips though and see how much has changed! I think I will always be a NJ girl, as much as I can't stand the taxes and insurance, I can't picture living anywhere else.

Not so surprising. Our neighbors all go, Our family all goes, our friends all go. In August, half of my girls soccer team was there during the last three weeks(at different times), including us for two of them!

I loved my vacations "down the shore" so much that I moved here (Exit 105), within a block of the ocean. I grew up in Jersey City (Exit 15A), but moved around the state for a while, and for three misguided years even lived in PA (Morrisville, Bucks County, just outside Trenton).

My traditional Saturday breakfast is a pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich on a hard roll, which I get from my neighborhood deli, and my ice cream gets sprinkles on it. On some occasions I have been known to eat a hoagie (even when I lived in Burlington County I called it a hoagie). I have to agree that nothing tastes quite as good as a sausage, pepper and onion sandwich eaten on the boardwalk.

I live in a neighborhood which gets a large influx of bennies from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, then they all go home and leave us "townies" to enjoy life here.

I will be taking my WDW/DCL vacation Thanksgiving week, so I will be here in New Jersey for Jersey week. I no longer have kids in school, so we can stay here and keep an eye on the state while the rest of you relax at WDW!

Beth
