Disney World's single biggest tourist market is.....New Jersey?

Hi,

Born, raised and still live between Exits 3 and 4 of the New Jersey Turnpike. Area code 856. Hoagies, not subs; pork roll yum! Going to WDW for the fifth time overall, fourth solo, November 30-December 8.

South Jersey Shore will be well represented in January. BIL running Marathon. Friends & family going to cheer him on.

GSP Exit 36 - Atlantic County -it's subs all the way except for shoobie transplants who call them Hoagies.

I completely agree!
I am GSP 30 (was 36 until 6 months ago).
It's definitely subs! Oh and jimmies...

This thread is so funny! You are so right GoN2WDW, I was born and raised in South Jersey and I think its definately a north-south thing. North Jersey is like a different state to me!! No one in South Jersey asks "What exit", I don't have a clue what exit I lived near, I never heard pork roll called taylor ham, it's a hoagie and they are jimmies!! I live in VA now and people tell me all the time, you don't sound like you're from NJ and I tell them thats because I'm not from North Jersey. To me they sound like they have a NY accent, I guess I have more of a Philly accent. I've only ever been to NYC once in my life, when I was in 6th grade!!!

My family will be there during the 2nd week of November. Like many of you I have a little connection to LBI. I was born and raised on LBI in Beach Haven.(yes I was at Chowderfest) Still live right off of exit 63 on the Parkway. See everyone at Jersey week.

I have lived in NJ, my whole life, most of it in Northern NJ, and now in Central NJ. There are defininite differences between North and South, now living in the middle, I see a little of both, even though I am in "Staten Island South" (Everyone from Staten Island ends up moving to Central NJ, but they are origianally from Brooklyn ;) ). I am glad that sprinkles are still sprinkles in Central NJ. ;) I don't know if I could live anywhere else, other areas don't appeal to me, maybe Florida, but I have to come to back NJ during Hurricane Season, and pray I have a house to go back to. I feel sorry for those that have not had Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese on a Hard Roll, or good Pizza. Just for the record going Late November, Early December, and I live at exits, 123 (Rt, 9 to 18) Southbound and 105 Northbound. Also I found this link and I thought I would post it here, just because I thought some of you would enjoy it, I have no affiliation with the owners. http://www.jerseygirlusa.com/catalog.html

I am shocked, I haven't seen anything about Bennies.

And we should definentaly get NJ Rates. Maybe the next Disney park should be in NJ, but I don't think Disney wants a seasonal park, and WDW would lose a lot of business. Speaking of which, what do people think of Great Adventure? I watched a parade there last summer and it just made me miss disney, it had 3 floats and a bus with characters on it. My DD seems to like the WB characters, but she gets more excited about the chocolate characters in Hershey PA.

I totally agree. No exit number, we ate hoagies, pork roll and jimmies. And I agree with you about the accents also. S.Jersey sounds more like Philly. It is like the state of NJ could be divided in two parts like different states!

South Jersey girl here (southern Cape May county) - if people use "subs" in our parts you're definitely labeled a shoobie. Big Philly influence down here - it's Eagles and Flyers country. New York fans are far and few between unless they have transplanted from near the Big Apple. By the way - there are die-hard long time local folks here that think anything above Atlantic City is practically North Jersey. Central Jersey almost doesn't exist for folks here at the bottom of the state. For me - North Jersey is anything above Trenton.

another jersey girl, pork roll not taylor ham, hoagies and we always called the chocolate sprinkles "jimmies" and the rainbow ones "sprinkles". Exit 8 here, central NJ. My observation is that there is north, central and south jersey. I've been told that I don't have an accent. Not NY and not Philly. I've lived in Louisiana for 16 years and people here say "You don't sound like you're from Joizey"! My mom sends me care pkgs. with pork roll and Tastycakes. I miss Manasquan too.

Anyone else find this HILARIOUS??? North Jersey is "sprinkles," South Jersey and Philly are "jimmies," and someone from Central Jersey uses one of each! Right down the middle, a perfect blend of each influence.

It has been a real eye opener living at the South Jersey shore (same island as Atlantic City). I lived in Philadelphia the first 28 years of my life and had never heard the term Central Jersey. In Northeast Philly, we truly believed (and still believe) that anything north of Trenton is North Jersey, period. LBI??? North Jersey! That's because all the major roads from Philly going east also head south. There's no easy way east from Philly unless you also head south towards A.C. Same with the trains.

As I said before, Atlantic City is a lone island of "subs" in a hoagie region. So even though I grew up eating hoagies, from the first day I moved here I ate subs. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Almost missed this thread, what a great State. Don't appreciate it till you live somewhere else. Lived in Calif when I was in the Corp. Counting the days till our Easter Cruise  :Pinkbounc  :Pinkbounc

Born and raised in South Jersey, I now live in upstate NY. It is hard to find a hoagie up here! I had to make a trip down there over the summer just to get some of my old favorite foods! Anyway, whenever I'm in Disney, I find a lot of people from NJ - just last summer I was speaking with a woman at my hotel who was a teacher in my daughter's old school district in NJ. Our waiter at one of the restaurants was from NJ and we had a great time sharing stories of "back home". They're everywhere!! I do miss South Jersey. :flower:

Know why they are called "shoobies"?

It's because waaaaayyyy back the vacationers from Philly used to come to the shore with their toiletry items in an old shoe box.

And yet another Jersey girl here. Born in Newark, moved to central Jersey 10 years later. In my mid-twenties, moved to Iowa (that was the middle of nowhere to me at the time). I terribly missed Taylor Ham, (not pork roll), Tastykakes, hard rolls, good jelly donuts and buns. People did not know what a real bakery was. I couldn't figure out what they did on Saturday and Sunday mornings -- all they had was a grocery store with a baked goods section. I went in and asked where their "buns" where (you know--raisin, coconut, crumb), and was handed a bag of hamburger rolls! When I further explained what I was looking for I was shown the package of cinnamon rolls. Their buns were rolls, and their rolls were buns, but nothing compared to what I missed from home! And it was always jimmies on my ice cream.

Now living in central PA, but my heart will always be in north and central NJ, and no matter where I live, I'll always go "down the shore." But now I know what I love WDW so much -- it is like going home.

I'm from Union County. Anything south of the Raritan River is south Jersey. This thread is too funny. It seems there are more DISers from south, than north Jersey. Why is that?

Oh? When I was a kid in Surf City, we thought it was because the day trippers would wear their shoes to the beach (ya know, SHOes and BEach), while we ran around all summer barefoot. But the shoebox thing makes sense, too . . .

Funny, the "pork roll" people are outnumbering the Taylor Ham people. I was born in Bergen County and raised in Hudson County and it's always been Taylor Ham.

I got my story from my dad (lived in Stafford Township for 50 years) -- he told me that story when I was a kid, BUT there was something about wearing their shoes with socks to the beaches now that you mentioned it -- I'll have to ask him about it. Did you go to Southern? I graduated in '84.

I understood that the term was in fact from shoe boxes. However, I believe it was because the people from the city used to take the train to the beach for the day and packed their lunches in shoe boxes. Wow! I wonder just how many versions there are of this folklore! :goodvibes And if you're from South Jersey, LBI was the North Jersey beach. Now Ocean City is THE family beach!

Nope, we were summer residents - Memorial Day to Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Easter. I grew up in Weehawken, so North Jersey that we were practically in Manhatten :teeth: . And my family called 'em Blimpies, because back then, it wasn't a chain, it was a sandwich shop in Hoboken! Jimmies were chocolate, and they tasted like chocolate back then, too :teeth: .
