Disney Skyliner (Gondola Transportation System) Read Post 1 Now Open!

Sorry, I may not have worded it correctly. I was responding to your question asking if there is any reason to believe that it would not be a the suspended monorail as described in the podcast. One of the reasons I don't believe it will be a suspended monorail is that the turn at Boardwalk is to sharp for that.

Oh that, was someone else who must have asked that cause I'm not smart enough to think of a suspended monorail. However, thank you for clarifying. I now understand.

I've seen that mentioned a few times as well regarding removal of the buses at those resorts. Sure they have the opportunity to get rid of the buses but something just tells me they wouldn't do this. Maybe they would limit the number of buses going so you could have to wait longer for one if that was the mode of transportation you wanted to use. Buses are a well-known fairly tame (compared to those with fears of boats/monorails/gondolas) mode of transportation.

They need both buses and gondola's running at maximum capacity for the POP line at park closing... Seriously, the worst thing ever...

Also, does anyone know if the gondola's will be affected by inclement weather? How high do winds have to be to shut them down? What about lighting? Maybe this was already asked and we won't know until we know but I'm just curious.

I honestly don't think wind would be an issue because it's not an issue in other places, but I do think lightning would shut them down.

Not sure if this is helpful, but below are some pictures I took from a gondola I was in when I went to Hong Kong -figure it can give an idea of the loading area (which was very slow moving, so plenty of time for loading and taking pictures and stuff), how many cars were being run at once, the size of the cars, etc.

Also, they had no AC but did have vents at the top that could be opened or closed - Hong Kong isn't the same as Florida but it can get pretty hot and humid there as well

Oh, and these had a glass floor - not sure if Disney would go that route

I would love a glass floor.

I have to say I don't know that I would want to be on an open air gondola when the daily afternoon rain storm hits. It would be like Kali River Rapids with fewer thrills.

It would not be open air. The ones used as transportation in other cities are closed.

Which is why the "no A/C" thing still has me scratching my head. Even with movement and vents at the top.

At DCA today and noticed for the first time that they call the cars on Mickey's Fun Wheel "gondolas". They do resemble the type of gondolas that might be at WDW and they are mostly open air with a sort of metal mesh enclosure for the top half. Maybe that's what they have in mind?

Interesting point. But I don't see that really being workable in the afternoon downpours in Florida.

If there is no A/C I wont be riding! I can't imagine sitting in an enclosed/semi-enclosed box in the summer in Florida.

They will have AC, of this I have little doubt. It may in be "Crystal Palace forty below" AC, but they will have it.

The wind question is they will be able to sustain "normal" wind speeds probably up to 30 MPH, and probably even handle gusts up to 40-50 MPH. Beyond that I don't think you'd want to be on it - if there is a severe windstorm or certainly a hurricane they won't run it, but I would suspect it can run in most of the afternoon downpours. (There's a breeze that comes with those, but nothing severe.)

Lightning would also be unlikely to affect them - though if I had to guess they would likely shut them down in severe lightning storms. Not to say they couldn't be struck, but lightning would conduct around the metal cage and through to the ground. Would not be unlikely being in your car during a lightning storm is the safest place to be.

I think a lot of that is a customer service and operations decision. The conveyance can operate in those conditions, but it doesn't mean it will be super pleasant. So it won't have to close, but it might anyway.

I was just thinking...maybe I'm wrong here...but wouldn't this actually save Disney on some bus costs?

Now they don't have to have buses go to EPCOT or Hollywood Studios from these resorts, just like the monorail.

I doubt that. manypeople are afraid of heights. there has to be another option for them. the crescent lake resorts that don't have buses to DHS or epcot are within walking distance.
The question is, what does Disney do with people who have a fear of heights? (Answering my own question: Those people could choose not to stay at those resorts...) I wouldn't say I have a fear of heights, but I have a real fear of the cables breaking. It is irrational, I know. That video of the gondolas (or whatever is the appropriate term) in Dubai...I'm not sure I could ride those.

that would be awful if their only choice would be to not stay at that resort. and very unfair.

Only 10 people per gondola seems very low

If this is true then I can see them being very small cabins that probably WONT have AC and might even be open air

I can't see them being open air.

10 does seem low but they weren't going to build the big ones of 20+ people. They'll likely have a lot of cabins on the line constantly running.

Good point, they will probably have tons of them running at once if they are small capacity

I was listening to a podcast where they believe the number is low because they have to account for how many strollers these cabins would accommodate.
