Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2024 Edition

Couldn't they keep a little bit of the Rivers of America, like maybe the part by Liberty Square and stretching out to Tiana's? Or at least to the start of the new Frontierland? The boat could stay stationary by Liberty square's dock and people could still go on it and see it and there would be a bit of water left separating that area from the hills and Western rocks of the Cars area

If they left the riverboat stationary in a short section of "river" they could use it as a character meet and greet, or even for special events or a dessert party. It's been used for that before, so it's not that much of a stretch and it would keep the riverboat as a feature of the area.

No. The entire Rivers of America is the land they have to use for the Cars and Villains portions. Basically, they went for the cheapest option to "expand". There's land beyond the river and railroad but that would be a lot more expensive to develop from the ground up. Instead, they can just use the previously dug up land as the foundation for the new portions. The difference in what Universal is doing with Epic Universe and what Disney is matching with is amazingly clear.

Disney said in a blog post today that the Cars area will be located where Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America are currently, so it's not speculation.

It would have been a no-brainer for them to put "cars land" in the area presently housing the Tomorrowland Speedway, which is a lot larger than Tom Sawyer Island and all the land taken up by the water around it. While "Villains Land" can easily co-exist as part of the area by the Haunted Mansion, Cars Land has nothing to do with old west thematically.

That's not really apples to apples, Disney isn't building a whole new park from scratch away from existing theme park infrastructure.

ETA: it's more akin to past projects like replacing something more like Jaws at U Studios for more Harry Potter (not that I minded, but it's a better comparison).

I'd like that!

My point is Disney could be doing that with new land beyond the railroad and river, all the while keeping the existing portions and theming but that would cost more money and it's easier to teardown the existing structure and use the previously created area than build something brand new.

Depending on how it’s done, since the Cars are somewhere in the frontier rather than specifically in the Radiator Springs southwest, they’re arguably able to strengthen the frontier immersion vs. “You’re in the rugged frontier, but there’s also a steamboat and a colonial area in your field of view.”
The design looks a bit like...general American Southeast? Which I actually don't mind. It makes sense when you consider 1. that's an area of the US that tends to be written off or seen as "uncultured" when a unique culture does exist there and 2. probably that geography represents a big chunk of domestic WDW visitors.

TLDR: They're chasing after the Dollywood crowd 🤣

Cars area is more the mountain states, like Colorado/Wyoming. Rocky Mountains, Yosemite type areas with geysers. Can fit with BTMR which is based off Utah/Bryce Canyon.

That would be a major undertaking
As someone the lives close to the ocean I have seen much bigger boats than that moved. It’s usually in the middle of the night and the block off the entire road to 2 way traffic.

I wouldn't say definitely. This is just speculation.

Both pieces of concept art show the land in two different locations. I do wonder if Disney didn't reveal where it would go during the presentation because either they don't know or that they know we won't like the answer.
If they are choosing between Muppets and Animation Courtyard, I know which one I'd pick... But the linked article makes a good point about there being more to work with in the Muppets section. I would be upset though.

I really hope it's Animation Courtyard. I would hate to see The Muppets go away - it's way more important than the Rivers of America! I know they were worried about getting booed, but didn't the crowd boo the Cars concept art too? I know that they can't just make decisions based on a small section of hardcore fans, but I wonder if it gives them any pause at all? They are already starting to file permits, so I don't know.

Why do they need more to work with? Spend the dang money, Disney and rehabiliate a practically abandoned area of the park, not one that always has a lot of people in it!

They knew and they knew there would be blowback, and lots of it. Yesterday afternoon, they filed for permitting, along with engineering drawings that had been obviously worked on for some time.

It was a very dishonest move on the part of Disney.

You know, the more I think about it, I think the outrage is focused in the wrong places. The Tropical Americas would be the perfect place for an Emperor's New Groove ride, and that fits better with Encanto. I don't know if they could have reworked Dinosaur into that, but I don't see why not? I get why they are doing Indy, but, ehh, I'd rather have had something different.
