Authenticity Lost: Morocco Pavilion Fountain & Courtyard Receives Pedestrian Tilework Following Refresh

What used to be a fountain featuring the handiwork and art of actual Moroccan craftsman, now features a rather pedestrian tile pattern as part of a refresh of the plaza.

We’ll start with a look back at the fountain, and the handcrafted tile pattern that was part of a construction effort that included nearly two dozen Moroccan craftsmen, enlisted from cities around Morocco when the Morocco Pavilion was being built for EPCOT.

While the fountain itself was still under construction when we visited, the perimeter planters feature the same pattern that the fountain will receive, giving us a glimpse at what’s to come.

Not only was the original tilework and artistry lost, but so were the trees that provided some shade for guests who sat on the ledge or at tables nearby.

While there is no doubt that the tilework at the pavilion is aging and in need of repair in many places, it is disheartening to see Disney World choose such a low-effort, low-budget solution for something that was so authentic. The tilework was actual art – made and placed by Moroccan artisans. Theme parks, by their nature, are filled with facades and fake environments meant to look real. When you actually encounter something real and authentic in themed environments, it’s a rare treat.
It's really not fair to compare the central octagonal water feature with original tile, to one of the square planters located off to the side with the new tile. If you're going to make a case that one is terribly diminished in quality at least compare the same thing as a before and after. The bait and switch is misleading.

Do you know what tile maker they chose? Not all Moroccan tile is fancy. While you may not like the design it still may be actual Moroccan tile.
I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of Moroccan tile or Moroccan artisans....

The fountain photo is actually a "before" shot of the planters (it just happens to be a long-range view, so the fountain is included). The "after" photo clearly shows they not only lost the previous tile, but also those beautiful trees.

I love it. So many opinions on tile!

(If it matters, my personal opinion is that it looks clean and refreshed, but I am sad over the lost history and those trees. Also, good luck keeping some of those grout lines from looking dingy!)

What look were they going for? Greek? Mediterranean? 50's Prime Time Cafe?

A couple more points about the Morocco refresh....

We know the fountain has been stripped, so new tile is coming, and it would be unlikely to veer far from what has been revealed. However, previously, only the top tier shared the same design as the planters, so the base could have a different design.

The old tile was in disrepair, so replacing it is understandable...

...however, the quality is different.

One, you can see they did not continue the tiles to ground, but left exposed cement.
Two, you can see some lines look wavy or bumpy.

I assume this is from removing the old tiles without properly preparing the new surface, or from using tiles that don't work well with certain defects or placement (for example, edges). Disclaimer: I am not a tile worker, I just play one on this forum.

Former Laughin’ Place Playground Transformed into Stroller Parking for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

As part of the removal of construction walls from the front of the attraction, some walls have been removed from near the Tiana’s Bayou Adventure queue as well. The queue remains behind walls, but the former Laughin’ Place playground has been revealed to be stroller parking for the attraction.

Why did I immediately start singing "They Paved Paradise and Put Up a Parking Lot"

I thought some of the Bugs Land decorations ended up in Pixie Hollow in Disneyland. I tried to look it up to see if it was indeed true and found that Flik’s Flyers was redesigned to become Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind. I didn't know that.

Yup, they did repurpose that one. Better thay had saved Heimlich's Chew-Chew Train!

Not saying I hate Avengers campus, but my personal homage will always be using the photo I took of Rosie from A Bug’s Land as my profile pic.
There were so many small-kid friendly rides in A Bug's Land and they gutted it for ONE ride.
And the theming of ABL? AMAZING. I'm so sad my nieces never got to experience Heimlich's Chew Chew Train.

I know that. That is exactly what I said. The octagonal fountain has original tile (meaning its a "before" photo) and the square planter has new tile (meaning its an "after" photo).
I'll agree that it's unfortunate to lose the tree but that has nothing to do with what I said, or with the comparison of the two tiles.

..and if you knew how to unbalance the cars*, Francis' Ladybug Boogie generated some awesome spinning. This was a stock ride (a version of the "cuddle up") with custom ride vehicles. Unfortunately, I think there are only a handful of them left.

*: A CM tipped us off on our first ride: put as much weight as you can on either side of the door.

Ok, thanks. I was quickly trying to catch up on responses and must have misread or misunderstood. No worries! :goodvibes

Will all party dates be available on June 6?

Yikes! So many negative reactions to the ride in the comments, and I agree with them actually.

I’m not riding this until it becomes an original non-PATF ride and has a new story involving a rabbit or some other animal's troubles, similar to what Br'er Rabbit went through. Same thing goes with the upcoming Disneyland version. The ride should still be set in the bayou, but just have the Princess and the Frog IP stripped away from it.

I mean, it's too late for Disney to bring back Splash Mountain. They can't restore that ride to its former glory, but they can make something better out of Tiana's Bayou Adventure. Ain't too late to do that.

We'll see if Disney releases more concrete information, but I believe last year, the Dessert Party went on sale online shortly before 6am. It's a little different this year, though, since I don't think they previously opened it up to resort guests first.

If it launches online, all party dates should be available, but individuals would only see party dates for which they already have a resort reservation (they would also need a MNSSHP ticket).
