Disney Magic - best deck for stateroom?

I've read terrible reports from those that were directly underneath the nightclub of bass booming until 1am, and cabins below the galleys where from 4 or 5 in the morning equipment being dragged across the floors and banging or machinery noise.
I think you have been lucky in your cabin choice before! Long may your choice of good cabins continue!
Haha, thank you! We actually book an OGT last time, so thanking Disney for giving us such great rooms. :D I think some of it has to do with the individual as well - some people will be bothered by things that others aren't, just a fact of life. I did look up stateroom reports for the cabins we had last time, and saw nothing that indicated people were bothered by excessive noise at the time, but who knows. Some will like being low on the ship and not notice noise, and some will like being higher up. When we were on Deck 10 on the dream, I was worried we'd hear a lot of noise from the pool deck (and the pirate party on Pirate night), but again, we heard almost nothing, and the kids running through the hallways were the loudest noise we got. Fingers crossed our staterooms on the Wonder this April will be just as magical as the others have been! :shamrock:

Cruisers choose Deck2 for vacation budget only...In summary book to your budget, but posters should be honest and explain that you only book Deck 2 to fit your vacation budget, you are on the ship, you get the same food and entertainment, but higher decks are priced higher for a reason otherwise they wouldn't sell at that price. IE Alaska verandahs sell out very very fast.
I have to respectfully disagree with you here. We booked Deck 2 the first time because we wanted to try an ocean view room instead of a veranda room, and loved it so much we actually had to jump through some hoops to get it on our next cruise. We aren't veranda people (although I will give you, if we were cruising Alaska, I would be in a veranda in a heartbeat), and found that deck 2, regardless of cost, was a much preferable deck to the deck 10 veranda we had had previously. We used the veranda once I think, and found that we just didn't enjoy sitting out there as much as we thought we would, and it actually hindered our view of the ocean from inside the room. I think everyone is going to have their own preferences, it's just a matter of trying it to see what you like. My husband and I like being close to the water, we like having the large porthole and not the veranda, and we like being near the bars and restaurants instead of the pools. They type of person you are and your interests can have a big impact on what type of room you like as well.

We love deck 7 on the Magic. We are usually somewhere midship. We have never had trouble with noise and it is convenient to Cabanas which we love for breakfast each day. I would stay away from elevators however and the laundry.

Any opinions on Deck 1?

Well that is for the poorest of the poor. If you want to slum it be my guest.....

:sad2: That is of course if we are all going to listen to "DISNEY FANTASY" cause you know price dictates everything and well those are the cheapest rooms on the ship and they are practically giving them away. So they must be terrible!

Oh, you are bad! :rotfl:We had some friends who stayed on Deck 1 on the Magic last April, and they really enjoyed it. Said it made for easy on/off at the ports, and they loved the double porthole window they had. I don't recall any complaints they had at all!

We have almost always done decks 5 and 6. We enjoy this location because we never use the elevators so we are in the middle and everything is an easy trip up or down. Stayed on deck 8 once and did hear them rearranging the deck chairs in the morning, but didn't last too long.

I see I was mentioned. Whilst I live and work in London we are in a suburb, which is actually in the countryside with forests and fields we are away from any noise. I am a light sleeper so " any" noise wakes me up. Deck 8 on the Magic we have never ever had an issue, in fact on these boards it seems often to be cruisers who hadn't been on deck 8 making comments. We have had inside rooms outside rooms and prefer deck 8. I would say if on the next release of cruises all decks all rooms were the same price ( ex concierge) everyone would book a higher deck and a verandah they know it's better. The one factor, is price. Cruisers choose Deck2 for vacation budget only. How much you are willing to spend. The higher the deck the less vibration and less movement you get. That's basic science. As Scotty on Star Trek would say you can't break the rules of science. The further you are away from engines and further away from the sea the better it is. Deck 2 being under the main entertainment and MDRs and above engines and close to dock walls will get more noise. Thrusters vibration etc. Movement wise the lower you are the more sudden and unexpected random movement is felt.Higher up the movement is ironed out to a gentle sway. The sudden lower deck movements coupled with being enclosed a low cause motion sickness. So if your ears detect movement but your eyes say I see walls, and your brain says walls do not move, you get sick. If you go higher look at the horizon and get fresh air you feel better. So Deck2 is enclosed and low near engines. There was mention of the laundry never book a room next to it, hot humid and used 24/7 and people speak loud there. All those who " love" Deck two also post how wonderful it is to get an upgrade to a higher deck. They know the higher the better. The reason to book deck2 is low cost, end of. TAs knowing your budget will sell you the benefits, they are sale people, a sale of a low cost room is better than no sale. The elevators are busy all ship. That is another false assumption, in fact in port it's the noisiest and most busy place. People on higher decks do not use elevators to Cabanas or the snack places ir soda station or pools or spa lower decks have to. In summary book to your budget, but posters should be honest and explain that you only book Deck 2 to fit your vacation budget, you are on the ship, you get the same food and entertainment, but higher decks are priced higher for a reason otherwise they wouldn't sell at that price. Maybe @Tonka's Skipper can chime in here, but I thought on the Magic the CG is quite low and the location that sees little to no rocking is actually midship in the deck 3 to 4 range (forget the technical term for this point, maybe pivot point), but other then that your right, the bottom is more sudden motion then the top, windshield wipers are a great way to see this phenomena. I will say that in rough seas the front can be either wicked or wicked fun if you are like me. For that though we are talking bow slapping seas that are rarely seen in the Carribean.

I will say our roughest ride ever was on the Fantasy deck 12 forward when we left CC after 7 and had to book it back to PC, can not understand why concierge on the dream class are on the bow.

I thought that was crew quarters, or maybe they let you work for your passage;)

Are there a lot of rooms down there or just a few?

We were on the Wonder on deck 2 close to the elevators in ocean-view 2050 and it was fabulous except for the nightly thumping from overhead in the middle of the night when housekeeping vacuumed all those booths in Wavebands. Back up the vacuum a foot and then bang it into the booth, move over a bit and do it again, then repeat for the next hour and keep those (light sleepers) awake in the cabins below! I am admittedly a light sleeper and do sleep with a white noise machine, but it couldn't mask the thumping from the vacuum! I'm trying deck 2 at the front next cruise and hope that there's not a similar issue with vacuuming in Diversions. If so, maybe I'll go up and join the housekeeping crew and ask for a spare vacuum so I can help them get it done quicker so I can go back to sleep. :) I liked being close to the elevator as that seemed to keep the kids running in the hallway noise to a minimum because they couldn't yet pick up speed when they passed my cabin.

Deck one only has a handful of rooms in the forward port side of the ship, the rest of it is blocked off from guests.

Thanks for your post.
I was only using you as an example of someone that lives in a metropolitan city as per your many posts about London, but there really is no need to turn this into a how much you spend thread.
As for your basic science, well there does seem to be many who disagree with you. I do as well.
The highest deck seems to work well for you and your family so great.

Windshield wipers? Confused!

Maybe as high as possible and in the front is perceived to be the best place on the ship?

If you watch the windshield wipers top and bottom, essentially that is how the boat moves (tried to give a visual we all know), granted we hope the ship never rolls that much;). Same angle top and bottom, but on a left to right roll, the top of the ship moves a further distance, just as the tip of the windshield wiper moves a further physical distance than the base of the wiper. The thought process is you feel the side to side motion less up top even though it is moving further, I believe it is supposed to be a less abrupt feeling motion. Not 100% I believe this based on our roughest ride to date being up top, but we were never down lower once the ship started a rockin that night.

We have always been on Deck 6 or 7 on the Magic/Wonder and loved both of those levels. We have a cruise in May and are trying out Deck 8, but the review about deck 8 looks to be promising!

We've sailed on Deck 2 multiple times and we really love it! It's so easy to get to the dining rooms! Yes, Deck 2 is cheaper than some higher decks, but we like to get 2 inside rooms and have found we can do so for about the same price as one verandah-- so for us, we're not saving any $$ by being on Deck 2, but we're getting twice the space (and bathrooms!!).

Have always had Deck 8 forward on the Classic ships (Disney Wonder - 8008, Disney Magic - 8020 and 8508 (x2)) and have never had a problem with deck noise. On the newer ships (Disney Dream - 5036 and 5536, Disney Fantasy - 5536), we like the proximity to the kids clubs, although we are far enough away to not hear them.

Any opinions on Deck 1?
I did deck 1 on the Magic once. I liked it. It's quick to get on and off the ship in port. It's quiet most of the time because no one but the people staying on that floor are there.

I am not really sure I agree with that logic. Up top you are also moving much faster than down below. Looking at the windshield wiper, the base spend the same time travelling from one end to the other as the tip, but it has to go a much shorter distance. So, it has to be slower. And changing direction at a slower speed seems less jerky to me than when I do it at a higher speed.

We always prefer deck 6 or 7 -- 7 is our preferred desk -- mid-aft. Easy access to everything on the upper decks and very quiet.
