Disney Daily Birthdays – July Exercise Challenge

130 minutes of running & walking for me today ... I'm exhausted!

757/1200

The numbers will be updated on the front page soon, and tomorrow will bring some great color changes and an extra special birthday.
As a team, we're only 269 minutes away from Disney's Hollywood Studios Purple. I think we will reach it tomorrow - let's get those minutes posted (for those of us not taking rest days) and get there as early as we can!

One of my favorite parts of the daily post is announcing the color changes :rainbow: ... and we've got plenty to announce today!

Congrats to our newest member of Disney's Animal Kingdom Orange, purplekicks!

We've also got some new members of Disney's Hollywood Studios Purple to congratulate:

and ... Team Disney Daily Birthdays July Exercise Challenge! Congrats team!

We've also got a new member of Epcot Pink - congratulations, LizardQueen8!

And now, on to today's birthday, which is a very special one.

Today’s the big day … Disneyland’s diamond anniversary!

To all who come to this happy place: Welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America, with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.
—Walter E. Disney, July 17, 1955

On Sunday July 17, 1955, Disneyland opened to a selected group of press and invitees … and a large number of people who had obtained counterfeit tickets. Disneyland’s opening day was plagued by a number of mishaps, including no water in the water fountains, high temperatures, ride breakdowns, television broadcast difficulties, and issues with guest arrival control. This did not stop 50,000 people from showing up the next day for Disneyland’s first day being open to the public.
On opening day, Disneyland offered 5 themed lands and fewer than 20 attractions. Currently there are 8 themed lands and well over 50 attractions to be enjoyed at Disneyland Park … not to mention a second park located just feet away from Disneyland Park’s entrance, and 9 additional Disney theme parks across the globe (with a 10th one currently being built). To think that it all started with a mouse and a dream on one disastrous day 60 years ago!

Happy Birthday, Disneyland! Thank you for 60 years of magic and memories!

To all of our team members who have been to Disneyland - please share one of your favorite Disneyland memories. It can be something big or small, a favorite ride or character interaction - any memory you love, please share it! (Feel free to share multiple memories - I know I'm having a hard time picking just one!)

I'm going to start by sharing two fun memories, and I'm sure I'll be back with more later.
On my last trip to Disneyland, in 2012, my sister had broken her foot a few weeks earlier, and she was in a walking boot. While taking pictures with her favorite princess, Cinderella, Cinderella lifted up her dress a bit so that they could compare shoes - Cinderella's glass slipper and my sister's walking boot.
Here's a really bad picture of the picture (but unfortunately we don't have the actual picture):

My second memory is another character memory. On our first trip, we were sitting somewhere eating lunch (I can't remember where), and we saw Peter Pan just hanging around. My sister wanted me to go get a picture with him, but I was terrified (because he didn't have a line ... I'm much more comfortable with characters when I have to wait on line for it). She ended up going to be in the picture ... and then a line formed after us.

My favorite memories are from my 33rd birthday, also my first Disneyland visit.

One, riding Dumbo at 10 on Saturday morning with no wait (hadn't ridden Dumbo in years because we don't have kids and just didn't want to wait that long). The thing is, it was raining, and the park was practically empty! So we circled around with umbrellas, enjoying the moment.

Two, I felt a bit silly with my birthday sticker because everyone else who had one was 10 and under. But that night, I met a gentleman who also had a birthday sticker--his was his 83rd! Good for him!

From last year's trip to Disneyland, tagging along with my friends who were running the 10K and the half marathon:

1. I have a very close friend who was a CM for about a decade in the 90s/00s (she played multiple princesses in WDW and Tokyo) and she still has friends who work on both coasts. She got in touch with a guy who still plays the Mad Hatter and told him to look for me - we arranged a "code phrase" of me telling him that my friend from Chicago wanted to know if he had any mustard. He was taking pictures with Alice when I found him, and we took a whole series of crazy close up, far away, backwards pictures. He then told me to make sure to show up for musical chairs later in the day and I'd get to take part. I did and it was wonderfully silly :).

2. My friend K and I did the Surf's Up character breakfast at Paradise Pier, and since it was 9am on a Tuesday, it was pretty empty. When Stitch came by our table for a second time, he sat down, pulled up a cup of coffee, and proceeded to have a "conversation" with us. Neither of us had been much of a Stitch fan before this, but now we love him!

I'll probably share another memory or two when I check in with minutes later.
