Thanks for the encouragement. I live about 45 minutes west of Ashland. How cool is that? :goodvibes Lewis County to be exact.

We found our cat, Sam I Am, dead this morning. :sad1: The boys were at church with their cousin and when they made it home we had to tell them. Both of them cried for nearly an hour. What made it really difficult was that they wanted to know how he died and we couldn't tell them because we had no idea. He looked peaceful, no blood, no cuts, no nothing to indicate how he had died. He would have been 2 years old next week and he had always appeared healthy. Any way, remember my boys. They are really upset and have been making references to Sam all day.

On a brighter note, I took Derrick & Hunter for a walk and we discussed Disney World. They wanted to know when we were going to go back. I told them that we would go in May 2010. ;) That way the trip next year will be a surprise but at the same time they can have a date to look forward to.
I am so sorry

the lion king was AWESOME!!!!!!! i'll post pics as soon as i get them all uploaded. it was a really amazing show. although i did have to set this one lady straight. luke (my best friend's 3-year-old) was talking right after the second act started. he was talking louder than a whisper but by no means was he being disruptive or obnoxious and EVERY KID AROUND US was talking all through the show. you know how kids are - asking questions about "why did that happen" or laughing or whatever. anyway, this woman in front of me turns around and "ssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"s luke really loudly and rudely. then i said in a very loud and clear voice, "oh, i'm sorry. i thought this was a show for kids. maybe i was mistaken." she kept looking back at him and it was just making me livid. finally luke looked at his daddy and said, "i don't like that girl." :lmao: it was pretty funny. she got up and left and didn't come back. and believe me, he wasn't being obnoxious. i don't have kids so i KNOW when a kid is being obnoxious. there was no reason for her to get frustrated.

I can't wait to see pics...i loved that show when i saw it a few years ago...that woman was being ridiculous by the way...was she SUPRISED that a bunch o' kids would be there??...and we all know with kids comes "some" noise..maybe next time she should just go see "Les Miserables" lol

UM..... I can totally sympathize with trying give up the DP. I gave up caffeine over 12 years ago when I became pregnant with my first child and I never went back to the habit. But I still LOVED my caffeine free Diet Coke! But the more and more I read about how terrible aspartame is for you, I decided it just wasn't worth it. I gave it up cold turkey on January 2 and have probably had less than 4 glasses worth since then (and those three were times when I was out and absentmindedly ordered DC without even thinking about it.... such a habit!). I probably drank the equivalent of 4 -5 cans per day of DC when I was drinking it.

I love seltzer and have been using that as my substitute. I also use the
4C "crystal light" type stuff sometimes. It certainly helps the water go down easier! But I don't want it to become another "habit". Just an occasional treat. I must say though, 24 oz of plain water a day is about my limit. Otherwise I feel water logged!

Keep going with the removal of Diet Pepsi from your diet (or at least a significant reduction)..... your health will definitely benefit in the long run! (And so will your pocketbook!).

Kat.... way to go on the exercise this weekend. I kind of bailed. I had a great morning on the scale on Friday so I slacked off and gave myself permission to skip the exercise that day.... bad idea!! I did 20 minutes on the treadmill Saturday morning before we left to visit my parents and I did no exercise today (we were still at my folks house and it was cold and rainy.... no incentive for taking a walk!). But I'm back on track tomorrow. I am COMMITTING myself here in public to spend 40 minutes on the treadmill tomorrow... WITHOUT FAIL.

I did 30 on the arc trainer yesterday, and 50 on the elliptical today. I am going to try to do arc+weights tomorrow but who knows, depends on how the day goes. A week from tomorrow I start my hockey league so I am guaranteed at least 1.25 hours on Mondays!

Okay, I made UM's pumpkin soup. I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical of pumpkin and sausage (and Mr Kat was like what??), but it was AWESOME!!! We both love love love it. I did modify it a bit.. added 3 stalks of chopped celery, one whole small chopped onion, used garlic salt instead of minced garlic, and both milk and sour cream were fat free. Total calories in recipe, 900, and it made 10 cups, so about 90 cals per cup. It is super filling, too.

Hello Lovelies...
Just checking in to say I've hit a new low ... today I cut out the sizes in my bathing suits that I'm taking to WDW. Is that denial or what?

I've been pretty successful giving up wheat and eggs, and I've been concentrating on that more than anything else since I told myself I would not diet.

In the meantime, I'm trying to ramp up exercise before my 5:30 am bootcamp starts in a couple of weeks. I got my rebounder last week, and it is really fun. I think it's a good way for my body to remember how to play.

Way to go, UM, on giving up DP. Caffeine is my last vice. Oh, and a little bit of wine ....

Good job everybody! Keep on keepin' on.

Tiff

Still have 30 lbs to lose...

I am so sorry

OK, but then she'll just get annoyed with the people sobbing around her.:rotfl:

I'm back from the potluck. I did OK, better than my usual self, but not perfect. One lady who does everything "just right" made a really good jello dish with blackberries and sour cream. I'm going to try to do it with sugar-free jello and fat free sour cream. I'm crossing my fingers on it.
I wrote down everything I ate, and using RX's recommended website(thanks, by the way), I was about half-way between the calories to lose a lb. and the calories to maintain this week, so I'll have to cut back the next couple of days if I want to see some weight loss.

francesca - so sorry to hear about Sam. Give your boys a hug for me.

I've been a bit of a slug the past few days but we've had some major changes in our household. Our landlord finally consented to letting us get a dog (we've had cats here for 6 years). So, we went out and got a beagle puppy on Sat. We've pretty much been ready for this for a while, just waiting on the word and we were ready to go. DH and I are taking turns taking him out in the middle of the night so I'm a little sleep deprived right now. (I keep telling myself this is baby training). I've gotten a little bit of exercise in by taking him for some short walks - only about a block right now since he's so little. I'll post some pictures tonight hopefully after I upload them. Oh and his name is Stitch

Ooooh! I love puppy pics, and after the night I just had, could use some!

DH & I had Chinese last night (stupid cravings!), and apparently the baby wasn't too appreciative (and neither was the ol' pouch!) so I was up unitl 1am being sick, and kept waking up after that with some wicked heartburn. (Not to mention that Kicky McGee was up to his usual tricks! I swear this kid is training to be a kick boxer!) Serves me right for eating junk!

Hope you ladies have a great Monday!

Starting today I'm going to try and eat 1,500 calories. I've been good so far today, but it's not even 10:00 AM yet, and half the time I'm not even awake yet.

So far today I've had a bottle of water, and a light and fit yogurt smoothie that only had 70 calories. I'm going to try and drink no soda today. I'm working right now, well, I'm at work, not much to do though at the moment, so I'm on the DIS. I have a double shift today though, and that usually means I'll be eating junk by the end of it.

I just need to refrain from buying candy bars and bags of chips on my breaks, and I should be good.

I need a plan! DH and I got up at 4:45 this morning to help with a retreat, then we went to church, I got some school work done, and now I have to go set up for the potluck for the end of the retreat. I'm glad to do it, but a) I often overeat when I am sleep-deprived, and b) there's going to be a ton of food. I made reduced calorie coleslaw (with some green apple in it) for my contribution. Help me repeat to myself, nothing tastes as good as being thin feels. I read something that said they did a study, and when people are presented with a variety of foods, they are much more likely to overeat. So, I will fill my plate with things I would normally eat at home, and only one meal's worth (not the 4 dinner's worth I sometimes eat at these things). I don't need pizza, Chinese food, potato salad AND a cupcake. Those are the kinds of choices I've been known to make in the past, and when I look around at potlucks, I am not the only one. I'm going to go drink some water right now.

Potlucks always kill me at church! There are soooo many things that look good! ;) However, I have started scoping out the food before I get in line, so I'll have an idea of what's there and what to choose. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work!!! :confused3

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this a new job too. I did not remember you didn't like but so sorry. I remember when I was let go almost two years ago, it's not a nice feeling.

Yes, this was a new job I started in Januray. He has been trying to get me to work for him for 4 years! (Since I got my insurance license!) Evidently we haven't brought in enough money over the past quarter and he couldn't afford to pay me anymore. I'm a little ticked, as I wouldn't have quit my other job and taken this one if I realized it would be for such a short time! :scared: I applied for unemployment today and have sent my resume with DH to apply at the bank where he works. We'll see what happens.

Dawn...I can't believe the behavior of that lady! Lion King draws LOTS of kids, but I must admit, I was surprised at how young some of the kids were when we went. I don't think a 2 or 3 year old would sit well for a 2-3 hour performance. :confused3 JMHO

AHH! I need support! I just found out that a sales rep is bringing Moe's Fajita Bar for lunch today!!!!!! Free food is going to be my downfall!

I can eat Lean Cuisine, I can eat Lean Cuisine, I can eat Lean Cuisine...

I can eat Lean Cuisine, I can eat Lean Cuisine, I can eat Lean Cuisine...

That is funny :) ..i have a lean cuisine panini for lunch today :) i love those..i will have regular chips with it though, since i have them here..BUTi will count them out and eat only 1 portion!!!

Another Lean Cuisine lover here. The flatbreads are also really good, though I eat them like a pizza, and don't actually fold them. I also eat the paninis like a pizza, and don't put the two sides together. My favorites of those are the southwest chicken panini, and the philly chicken and ranch chicken flatbreads.

I also really like any of the Asian variety of meals, like the sesame chicken, the ginger-garlic chicken, and the chicken with peanut sauce. I forget the names of the other ones I like, but those are some of my favorites.

I also really like the butternut squash ravioli, and the glazed turkey with a side of sweet potatoes.

Today for lunch I had chicken, and later I'm going to eat a clementine, since there's a bag of those in the fridge that my employer bought, and she told me to help myself. Then when I get home, I'll have a Lean Cuisine for dinner, and for snacks either blackberries, and/or some hummus.

My calorie count for so far today, (between breakfast and lunch,) is only 290 and I don't feel hungry at all right now. Of course I'm being good right now since it's only the first day I started the 1,500 calorie a day thing.

UM - I think I'm going to try that pumpkin soup recipe of yours on Thursday.

Thank you!!!! So far so good. I'm embarrassed to out myself as wanting to quit since I've attempted it before :sad2:

I ONLY drink it when I get "the headache". It takes the headache away for longer and longer each time.

I'm not sure but the huge amount of water and Crystal Lite may be helping "flush" my system.

I'm supporting you on the treadmill quest. I'm plaining on doing it while I watch All My Children today. That's about an hour but I can take it slow if it gets too hard.

DF4E-
good, I hope you like the soup! It is really flavorful! I like things that fill me up and keep me fuller longer.
Lean Cuisine meals I usually like a nice green salad as a side. I haven't tried the panini ones. Sounds good!

AHH! I need support! I just found out that a sales rep is bringing Moe's Fajita Bar for lunch today!!!!!! Free food is going to be my downfall!

I can eat Lean Cuisine, I can eat Lean Cuisine, I can eat Lean Cuisine...

I CAVED! I went ahead and ate the fajitas. I tried to be good though, mostly lettuce and tomatoes, a little meat, beans, and rice, and just a smidge of cheeze sauce - my fav!;)

Francesca, I am so sorry about Sam I am. I hope your boys are doing OK today.

Nothing like a little Disney talk to bring about a few smiles. We use that trick with our 3yo. Do you know how you are going to surprise them with the trip next year?

DH & I had Chinese last night (stupid cravings!), and apparently the baby wasn't too appreciative (and neither was the ol' pouch!) so I was up unitl 1am being sick, and kept waking up after that with some wicked heartburn. UGGGHHH! I hope you are feeling better. Kicky McGee... I loved being pregnant and feeling the kicks and rolls.:goodvibes Not so much when I was feeling lousy though.

I CAVED! I went ahead and ate the fajitas. I tried to be good though, mostly lettuce and tomatoes, a little meat, beans, and rice, and just a smidge of cheeze sauce - my fav!;)

You could have done much worse. I know I would have.

UM, WTG cutting back on the DP! Caffeine withdraw headaches are awful!! Tylenol will be your best friend. Stay strong!!! Maybe I will completely give-up my morning coffee one day, but not now, maybe this summer

Hi Peeps :wave2:
I just got caught up on all of the happenings this weekend. I hate not being able to get here on Saturdays and Sundays but it just doesn't happen. DS2's b-day party was a lot of fun. BTW, cake, icecream and marshmallows as a bedtime snack for a 2yo = BAD NEWS!! The baby was wired! There is nothing like a 2yo hopped upi on sugar...:scared: He has never had icecream before and the last time he had cake was his last birthday. The marshmallows were courtesy of his cousin. He was singing his version of "Pirates of the Carribean" at the top of his lungs and running around like a lunatic. :lmao:

Hey Peeps! Just wandering over from the Body Board.

I just returned from a trip to the sports nutritionist and wrote it up on our thread, and I thought some of you might find this information interesting. Basically, my story is that I have been on a plateau for about 8 weeks (I have about 15-ish pounds left to lose). I have tried everything...shaking up my calories, changing my exercise, everything. I lost 2.4 pounds one week and that has been it. For exercise, I run 5x/week 3-6 miles per time (so I am running more than 20 miles per week), plus I strength train 3x per week. I thought that maybe I wasn't eating enough since I am exercising so much. So I upped my calories one week...and gained weight! That was fun. :sad2: So as a last resort, I signed up for this nutrition consult at my gym. This guy is very qualified and specializes in nutrition for the athlete. Here is the story...

So the results are in. Turns out my metabolism is smack-dab in the middle of the normal range, so that is a good thing. If you remember a while back I was worried that there might be a thyroid issue, but there isn't. Although he did not do a blood test, he said that the results of this test would have been a clear indicator that I need to see an endocrinologist, but it all came out ok.

The next number that we talked about was my VO2--this notes how well your body uses the oxygen from breathing and supplies that oxygen to your blood stream and muscles. He said that this number definitely showed that I am a distance runner! He said that my body is "very efficient." Um, ok, great...then why am I tub? :confused3 Basically, he could tell that I do a lot of cardio.

Calories...to maintain my current weight, I would need to consume 2,000 calories/day. So he has me on a 1400-1500/day calorie regimen. This is about what I have been doing.

As for the meal plan...a HUGE disappointment. He really screwed up and I am going to have to have him re-do it. This is going to be uncomfortable b/c we are "friends," but he just didn't do a good job. I told him that I was allergic to bananas and that I am a vegetarian but I do eat dairy and fish and eggs.

Well, he gave me a vegan meal plan (NO dairy, NO fish...but he did have the eggs in there) and a banana each day. WTH??? He also had that I am allergic to nuts, which I am not. He kept saying, "yeah, if you could have nuts, then you could eat XYZ...." At first I thought it was because nuts are so high in fat that he didn't include them. Finally, after the third or fourth time he said it, I chimed in with, "If nuts are so great, why didn't you include them?" "You said you were allergic." Ummm...no. So, I am going to have to scrap most of what he gave me.

The most interesting thing I learned was about milk and eggs. He said that skim milk is terrible...just equates to sugar water. He was adamant that you cannot separate protein from fat. In order for the protein to "count" and be used as protein by your body, there HAS to be fat in it. Otherwise, it just converts to sugar. Now, he did NOT say to have whole milk, but he did say that 1% was best....having just a little bit of fat with the protein gives you all of the benefits of the protein. Same goes for eggs....eating just egg whites is useless....the body just coverts it to sugar (and excess sugar gets stored as fat). Also, hard boiled eggs are useless...when you put eggs in boiling water, basically that amount of cooking destroys all of the protein.

In general, I have not been eating enough fat. Since I have not been giving my body enough fat, it has been holding on to what I do have.

[note for chicken eaters] - he is not a fan of eating chicken and poultry because you have to cook if so well in order for it to be safe to eat (salmonella and e-coli) that again, most of the protein gets "cooked out" so to speak. The example he gave was that if a 4oz chicken breast had 30g of protein in it, the amount of protein it would have after being cooked was only 7g. Now, he is not saying that you should eat stuff under cooked, but he just was making a point about how we are not getting all of the protein we think we are.

Everything else was stuff I already knew...no refined sugar (duh!), try to eliminate all white flour (in favor of whole grains), and try to eat as much natural food (least processed) as possible. Again, no big revelations here. He said to avoid anything with high fructose corn syrup (again, I long ago eliminated this from my life).

Basically, what he gave me is very similar to Phase 2 of South Beach Diet. Complete proteins, healthy carbs (from fruit and whole grains), and don't skimp on fat. And keep it to 1300-1550 cals per day. One thing I have been doing is having too many of the 100-calorie pack types of snacks. So I will eliminate those in favor of better snacks. I was already moving in this direction anyway.

Honestly, I think most folks would be better off using a site like SparkPeople or FitDay, which is what I will have to start doing. I am pretty disappointed overall. I really thought that I would get super helpful information and a great meal plan today...turns out, I am basically on my own with one of the above websites.

Opinions please...Dawn, I know you like FitDay and Kat loves Spark...what are the differences? Which one should I do?

I usually do a big green salad w/ a lean cuisine or smart ones, too.

The soup is just awesome. It works for a salad dressing too... our microwave at work is broken and I forgot my salad dressing, so I dumped it on and it is actually pretty good!

Great Information! Thanks for sharing it with US!

Did any peeps get in on the free dining this year?

I posted earlier about my work friend getting her reservations and all her dining stuff - she was calling back today to check on free dining. She said it would amount to about a $500 savings for her family.

I started out good today. And them my mom called and want to meet for chinese for lunch so I am finished eating for the day now. I did leave off the sauce but I didnt resist the rice. I guess I could have some lettuce and water later. YUM!
