Spent my day in Scoutmaster training yesterday while my DW shuttled the kids to sports. Felt pretty guilty, but at least now I'm fully trained, and it will give me some additional options with this disaster of a troop I'm a part of. Unfortunately, DD#2 doesn't like the other neighboring troop (his friends are in the bad troop which I think is part of it), while DS#1 does. Sure would be easier to pull them out of scouts all together, but I really do believe that the program would be good for both of them. So we're back to considering starting another troop in town. More to follow I'm sure...

Thought I'd share some very good news today. Some of you know that I had crazy amounts of student loans from college and med school (well over 200K) when I graduated (my parents were not very good about saving for education, a mistake that my DW and I are NOT repeating!). Anyway, for the last 6 years, I've been fortunate enough to get a loan repayment award from the NIH (National Institutes of Health) and today I got notice that I was approved for my last renewal (since I will be all paid off!). You have to renew every 2 years, and the application process is fairly extensive. For those of you who have large student loans, or have family with them, I highly encourage you to look into repayment programs. Mine is from the NIH for research, but there are public health awards for working in underserved areas, and the military has some great ones too.
