Dancing with the Stars - Season 4: Official Thread

It is so hard to vote this season.

I like Ian, I don't want Cheryl to win again.

I like Maks, I don't like Laila.

I like Joey, I like Kim.

I like Julianne, I like Apolo.

I wish Ian was with someone else so that I could like them better!
I would like Maks to win, I think he is an amazing dancer.

Does anyone else find it funny that they have the dancers that are already having to do 2 dances with their star, also having to do other dances? If Cheryl is spending time learning/practicing another dance with another partner, that will away from her time to teach Ian his dances. Know what I mean?

I like it better when they have Louie or others out there.
I would rather watch new ones/kicked out ones then a pro do 3 dances in one night.
(though I did enjoy Maks and his brothers dance off!;) )

 hiya. Is anyone else in the same situation i am? I watch when i get a chance, and if not it's no big deal, i don't record it and i don't bother to catch up. I find out a lot of info here or esp. on the way too long results show! it almost makes Monday night unnecessary? I just don't think anyone is outstanding this year. It's all kind of Blahh...

I fell asleep before the show started last night (DD graciously gave me this nasty cold and the medicine I took knocked me out).

I love being able to come here and find out exactly what happened!!!

Did BRC still have a chip on his shoulder from Monday night or was he over it?

He was completely over it. He said he was looking forward to being on the Jimmy Kimmel Show! :rotfl:

I thought he was very gracious. He made sure everyone knew how wonderful he thinks Karina is and thanking her for all she'd done for him. It was sweet.

I'm sorry, Ian fans, but he has some real issues he needs to work out in his life, in my opinion. There's not an ounce of true joy in his being, and it shows through in his dancing.

Him grabbing Apollo by the throat and choking him in the middle of Apollo trying to answer what's her face's inane questions.....just beyond rude and attention craving. Apollo really looked shook up about it.

Ian's smiling looks very forced and unnatural, which makes me feel like he's constantly grimacing.

Cheryl always looks tense, and her smile looks very forced whenever she's looking at him. It's a nightmare.

I'm not saying that Ian's a bad person. I'm not saying he's a jerk. I'm saying that I kind of feel badly for him and wonder what went wrong in his life that he seems so tightly wound and miserable. I really get the impression from him that he's on the verge of some type of breakdown. I wish he were happier.

Yeah, that was weird. I do think Ian meant it in a playful way (although there may have been some subconscious jealousy), but no one enjoys being grabbed by the neck. My husband says the appropriate guy-speak for these occasions is "dude, that's not cool."

Plus, Apolo received death threats from South Korean speedskating fans after he defeated their local hero at a competiton. He had to travel with bodyguards for over a year. So I'd imagine he'd be extra sensitive to being choked.

va32h, I'm so relieved that you weren't upset by my Ian comments! Whew!

Also, I meant to say in my last post, but got carried away with Ian, that I completely agree with your assessment of Laila Ali. I really like her, and wish there were more young celebrities / athletes like her to demonstrate to young women everywhere that it's okay to be confident, strong, and assertive. She does have a great sense of humor, which she uses well to temper her competitive nature.

I remember past male contestants who made comments about how they were definitely going to take home that trophy, and those comments were taken just as they were meant - someone with a champion spirit expressing confidence and desire to win. There's not a thing wrong with that. We have to allow women to express their competitiveness (if that's even a word) without labeling them as cocky.

....or the "B" word.....

we all agree in our family too that karina looked much happier and not as snooty as last year...and ian needs to go next- he is so boring to watch,i would rather have cockiness and silliness than to have this over serious actor try to dance. laila needs to extend those arms when she dances, my dd said she looks like a t-rex. i'm really rooting for apollo to win this thing!:dance3:

Didn't Apolo's partner win Australia's DWTS? Maybe it IS true that some of them are natural dance teachers and others have to work harder at it. Kind of like how some photographers can make everyone look good while others just take pictures.

Heck, Ian HAS lasted this long as Cheryl's partner. Maybe he'd have been out a long time ago if he had someone else as a teacher... with or without the chemistry.

No, that would be Joey's partner, Kym Johnson. She does look a lot like Apolo's partner, but a decade older!

I think there are certain dancers who are much better at teaching amateurs than others. All these pros teach or coach - but not all of them are used to working with complete novices.

Edyta Sliwinska (the dancer who was paired with John Ratzenberger) teaches children at the dance studio owned by her fiance (and fellow dancer) Alec Mazo. She is clearly a very patient and good natured instructor, which is probably why she gets the more challenged celebs - Evander Holyfield, George Hamilton, John R.

Jonathan Roberts - the one who was paired with Heather Mills - is apparently considered a "dream" instructor in the dance community. (Which is probably why he got the most challenging female celeb.)

I think Cheryl is a very good teacher - she knows how to hide her partner's flaws and highlight his strengths. But she is a Latin dancer, so their standard dances - waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, tango, aren't as good as some of the other pros - and she probably isn't as good at teaching them. She's also quite young - a lot is made of Julianne (Apolo's partner) being only 18, but Cheryl just turned 23.

Differnent pros have different methods too - I don't know if you watched season 2, but Jerry Rice's partner was Anna Trebunskaya, who was a very no-nonsense, strict, demanding woman. She wouldn't have put up with Joey Fatone for five seconds. When Jerry teased her about being so tough, she said "what? Did your football coach give you cookies?" It was very funny, but true - Jerry being a professional athlete responded well to tough training, but another celeb might have fallen apart, or even refused to participate (MASTER P).

I think the producers make a major effort to pair up the personalities of celebrity and dancer, and for the most part, it works.

Thanks for your reply, va32h. You are obviously more knowledgeable about DWTS than I am. I really cannot tell the difference between Apolo's partner and Joey's unless it's up close because Apolo's partner is cuter. And, I don't mean more beautiful, I mean cuter. ;) Being 18 probably has something to do with that.

I've often wondered how they paired the dancers to the celebs. Your theories are well founded and make sense.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

I don't get the anti-Cheryl sentiment. I am just curious as to why people just don't want her to win again. Sure, Ian isn't the greatest, but why get mad at her. Obviously, she has proven herself to be a good teacher. She won twice. There is something there.
Karina did seem more calm and happy this season. She probably realized that although BRC is very nice and entertaining, he's no Mario Lopez on th edance floor. Incidentally, do you think they will have him come back and perform, either alone or with his daughter? I know Willa came back last year to sing. (and she was awful) Anyway, if they did one of their duets (that is, BRC and MC) that would probably mean a lot of exposure for both the immensely popular Hannah Montana show and line and it would probably do a lot for both of their careers. Plus, Disney owns ABC, you know the rest..

Somehow I see Apolo and Laila as having confidence whereas in Joey I see cockiness and arrogance.

i totally agree with that. Joey seems like the Mario Lopez of this season, and i don't like it at all. (i was SO glad that Mario didn't win! even tho Emmitt couldn't dance to save his life, i hated Mario!)

Tonight's Jimmy Kimmel Live schtick wasn't funny. I can't believe they got Master P to come back though! And what was up with the cameras while Nelly Furtado was singing? I don't understand why they didn't show more of the dancers.

the Jimmy Kimmel skit is never funny. i don't know why they think it is. it's just stupid.

yeah that was really crazy when i saw that, i didn't know what was going on. even if he was just "joking" it still was a bit much. and how rude!! i swore Apolo was going to tell him that, i was waiting for it!
