Crying baby in nearby room at Disneyland Hotel

We are lucky in that our kids have always been good sleepers early on and we travel a lot with our kids, but I have been a mom long enough to know you can't judge what's going on. Ear infection? Teething? No reason? And FWIW I have been woken up way more times in hotels by people slamming doors at 2am. I usually bring at least one white noise machine plus run a white noise app on our iPad.

Yeah. Nothing at DL brings out more opinions than things like children’s behavior, strollers, scooters, smoking, and alcohol.

You are right about slamming doors. For every crying baby, there’s a loud guest in the hallway. Or there’s a scooter or stroller blocking the path. Or somebody with their phone out on a dark ride.

We all have things that are particularly annoying to us. And while it’s true there are some guests who are not considerate of others, we all have to accept that there are other people in the world and that we will occasionally be mildly inconvenienced by them.

I remember before I had a child, I just felt parents were lazy. Except mine, since she was a single mom;) After having a child, one that nursed poorly, had terrible acid reflux, and thought it was going to die anytime it was touched by water, I just feel so sorry for people when their baby is crying. Toddler crying and throwing a tantrum, I say good for those parents for not giving in. I do usually cringe at first when, because I have sensitive hearing, but then my sympathy and empathy kick in.

We all wear ear plugs. I think a white noise machine would be a great idea. I use one at school when my students nap. My DH won’t use one.

We are exhausted. We tried napping today. We are hoping for a better night’s sleep.

I don’t think that wanting a good night’s rest on vacation is asking a lot.

Hopefully tonight is better. If it happens again you could always ask to change rooms.

I'm a mom of 3. We've traveled with our kids since they were 1 year old. Most of the time they were great, but there were one or two trips that they just couldn't get comfortable and did cry a bit. I would bet those parents of the crying baby felt just as bad as I did when my kids had a bad night once. But, kids are unpredictable. I also don't think it's fair as someone above suggested to wait until your kids are older. There are several reasons why someone might not have a choice about when they travel such as family reunions, promises made to older children before the baby was conceived, etc. To be honest, even my 9-year-old cries at night occasionally. He has night terrors. Should we deprive him of the opportunity to travel because his sleep is unpredictable?

I've been to several hotels with thin walls where I can hear other families and I'm sure they can hear us. I always bring ear plugs and benadryl for that reason. I do wish more hotels provided earplugs. It's nice to find a pair already in the room so I don't have to think about it.

Pixie dust and fingers crossed for you, your family, and for the baby's parents (!) that tonight is much better for everyone.

Another vote for white noise machines! I crank ours because it's mandatory that every trip I take the room above decides to have dance parties ( jumping jacks competitions maybe??) between the hours of 10pm to 6am.

Also I seriously doubt that an early morning tantrum was ignored by the parents. They were probably super stressed and trying anything they could to calm baby. Been there, done that. It's so stressful! We went tent camping at a popular campground with a 1 yr old (how bad can it be?) who lost her pacifier in the night. We tore that tent apart looking for that thing. After what felt like forever (probably really half an hour) we almost just drove the 2 hours home in the middle of the night. It still makes me shudder, lol.

It’s more about the parents being unable or unwilling to console the child.

Grr.

My son, I swear, sometimes cried out of mourning for the state of the world. Or something like that. Clean diaper, non scratchy clothes, happy full but not too full belly, loved mom or dad right there saying nice things to him (or being quiet or sitting or standing or rocking or walking)....still wailing. I’m 100% sure that part of my diagnosed hearing loss is because of those times.

Harrumph.

All the yes.

Or just wanting...nay NEEDING...to get out of the house and see something other than the same walls of the same apartment.

I’m actually surprised by how many people have white noise machines / apps.

For me, the AC unit in the room is the white noise machine. As long as it isn’t rattling, it’s perfect. Usually Does a decent job of drowning out sounds from other rooms and hallways.

Look I don’t have any kids but it sounds to me like there were 2 babies that night. I mean it happens, do yourself a favour, build a bridge and get over it.
Kids get upset, it happens and it’s more frustrating for the poor parents, particularly with all the judgement that goes on. You’re lucky you’re in the position to be able to go on holidays in the first place, plenty of people never can. Unless the baby comes up to you and steals your wallet or assaults you, I think you should worry about more important things, like your own behaviour.
All the best.

Stepping in to remind everyone that this a a great opportunity to show each other some grace. No one likes being kept awake at night because of any kind of noise and no one likes being the cause of that noise. (Well, maybe some people do -- but that's a whole 'nother thread...) It's one thing to say not to judge the parents of a crying baby, but let's remember that not judging applies to other DISers, including the OP, too. Assuming motives without knowing the whole story is a tricky business.
Now, back to the show!

My daddy, God rest his soul, had some wonderful sayings that have stayed with me throughout my life. One of them was regarding babies. If someone complained about a crying baby bothering them, he would say, "You were a baby once and you bothered people." Sometimes we can do something to remove the baby from the situation, but sometimes we cannot. Most of us have been in that boat.

I think if you are looking for as close to silence as possible, perhaps you should rent a house rather than stay at a hotel. Hotels are some of the loudest places I can think of, and crying babies are just one of the noises. Doors slamming, elevators, screaming and running teenagers, fighting adults, etc.

I am so sorry! This is one of my biggest fears as a parent with a baby. We’ve been fortunate enough that our kids always sleep through the night at Disneyland (because they are just so exhausted) so I haven’t had to experience the sheer horror of frantically trying to calm a kid/baby in the middle of the night at a hotel. A few years ago I was up before sunrise to go on the “get up and go power walk” and as I walked out the frontier tower, I saw a dad walking around and singing songs to soothe a baby in front of the fireplace by trader sams. I gave him a head nod in solidarity. And I appreciated the fact that they thought outside the box of ways to soothe the infant rather than just letting it cry it out in the room.

We bring a white noise machine with us every trip. I swear the white noise machine has been a game changer for us. I no longer wake up to doors closing, or to adults waking up super early to shower and get ready, or to people running down the halls, or to crying babies.

I like your comment. But what really got me smiling was your name! That might be the best name on DISboards!

I'm sorry you got little sleep OP. I'm gonna reiterate what a lot of people are saying, the parents are probably way more tired. I'm 7 months pregnant and a first time mom so I'm scared that my baby is going to be crying and no matter what I'm doing it won't get her to be quiet and people are going to assume I'm not doing anything to comfort her. I'm not gonna call you grumpy just want you to know if you can hear it from your room the parent can hear it WAAAAAY more loudly than you and are trying to keep them quiet. Can you ask to change rooms perhaps?

Good suggestion - if available. I like to book at hotels that have 1BR suites if possible. That way if there is noise next to the bedroom I move to the sofa bed in the living room.
