Credit Card required upon check in??

As far as placing cash on the room and then being able to charge with the room key...they may *let* you do that at some resorts, but technically they are not *supposed* to. If they let you do that, great, but I can tell you that there are a lot of CM's who are sticklers to the rules and will not let you do that.

Really? We've done it many, many times at numerous different resorts and no one has ever even batted an eye or said anything to imply it was out of the ordinary. :confused3

I am pretty sure that for any resort I've paid in full for (like for just a night) that they didn't require a credit card at check in. I have asked to not have charges at other times, unless just for the room (I usually prefer not to have the charge-back, I prefer to use my credit card directly).

Heh heh.. Seems odd to think they wouldn't accept cash eh?

In God We Trust -- all others charge to the room.. pirate:

We have twice used cash at checkin to put on our room card for charging, once at the Poly & once at POR. It was a very good way to keep a check on how much we wanted to spend. Undecided for upcoming trip, discount with Disney visa at some locations vs. absolute peace of mind that spending is under the limit I want it to be.
When I wanted to put more on the key card a quick stop to the front desk was all it took.

Both of those trips we never left a cc # with the front desk at all.

The CM on each visit we have had also said that if we would like to come down the night before we check out and check our room charges we can pay cash for them at that time before they become a charge on our cc. We have never done this, to busy at the parks, but have been offered this choice each time.

And this too is exactly what I have done each time. I check over the charges.. and then pay cash for them.

Just a quick clarifying question.

Lets say we check in, give them our credit card and then proceed to charge $500 in souvenirs, alcoholic drinks and snacks. When we go to check out, can we pay cash to clear the ledger?

It might be nice to be able to lock cash/travellers checks up in our suite and settle up at the end of the week.

*edit - wow I posted this at the same time as you guys answered this! You guys are awesome!

I do not give a credit card when I check in. We have no charging privelage on the room key. I do buy the pre-paid debit cards which is very handy and I can keep track of it better. With the dining plan now, we don't spend that much money there anymore........just souveniers.

I have put cash down to spend on every trip we have taken to WDW. I never was told I could not do that or that I was getting a favor.

You must be a resort cast member in if you have this information

I have a check card I use for shopping. Bank cards are only good for $200 a day at some places. I have a Credit card if I need to rent a car. We do use credit cards since we payed them all off years ago.

Just an attempt to dispel some of the myths in this thread...

  • No, you do not need to put a credit card on the reservation upon check in. It is only for charging privileges and express checkout, one or both of which you can choose not to have. It is just for your own convenience, rather than having to carry around cash or a credit card, you can use your room card for purchases. Express checkout means your bill is slipped under your door on the morning of your checkout. You don't need to do anything to "checkout" (i.e. stop at the front desk) as you have your bill and are good to go. But both of these features are optional and you can choose not to put a credit card on file and therefore not have these conveniences.

  • Disney does not put a hold on your credit/debit card. As mentioned before, they just see if it is valid by trying to charge $1.00. Then, upon finding your card to be valid and depending on your resort you are given a credit limit. The limit at value resorts (Pop Century, All Stars) is $500.00, while the moderate resorts (Port Orleans, Coronado Springs and Caribbean Beach) have a limit of $1000.00. Finally, the deluxe (Contemporary, Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge, Yacht and Beach Club, Boardwalk, Animal Kingdom Lodge) and DVC resorts (Old Key West, Saratoga Springs) have a limit of $1500.00. This does not mean you are only allowed to spend that set amount during your vacation, nor does it mean that Disney places a hold on your credit card for that (or any) amount of money. What it DOES mean is that Disney will allow you to charge up to that set amount with your KTTW cards before they will need to take a payment on your credit card and restore your credit limit back to the original $500/$1000/$1500. Likewise, as they do not place a hold on your card and only test it for $1.00, if that card does not work, you will be asked for another form of payment.

Hope this helps to clear up some of the confusion!
I agree.
