I just got an idea for a theme like the "stroller swap" on the budget board. Why don't we have a food swap? I am always leaving good food and supplies behind after our vacation is over. I just leave all the stuff in the room and figure the maid will use it. Well how much soda, water, bread, peanut butter etc., etc can she use? I bet most stuff gets tossed away. Why don't we post our food and supplies on the dis boards a day before we are scheduled to leave and offer our food/supplies to the next DVC members going down? It really is a sin all the food I personally waste, and I would love to pass it along. How does this sound to others???
Please post your feelings so I can get a handle on this. I think this could be a permanent part of the disbaords with other DVC member support.
Marylyn (from NJ and DVC member since 1992).

We actually did the stroller swap last visit, and along with it, I passed on all my unopened foodstuff, plus some laundry supplies.

The only thing is, not all of us bring a computer on vacation - so posting the list might be a problem, and too - I think most people, unless we know each other, would only want unopened things.

Interesting idea; it's been brought up before, along with the suggestion that extra food be donated to a local charity. DVC has been contacted, and they - for many reasons, including, I believe, liability - have declined to handle / provide a place for such food items.

And as much as I appreciate the DIS DVC "family", I don't know how comfortable I'd be using a half-opened jar of peanut butter from someone I don't know....

Maybe you would be more comfortabe with only closed items. Personally I would have no problems with a opened peanut butter. I have grandkids and others have their own kids, why would we try to hurt them? I am more trusting, maybe too trusting, don't really know at this point!

I left two unopened 4 packs of wine coolers last trip... How about a unopened booze exchange....

a wedding cake layer but I believe my son and his new wife may live on cake this week.

We usually go out on check out day and find someone who appears to be just arriving. I ask if they want some unopened food stuffs, and just give it to them. The opened stuff, we either throw, or just leave on the counter and let the maids decide what to do with it.

I usually just try to catch someone in the hall before we leave. I gave someone some frozen fruit pops and healthy choice fudge bars last month.

Once I asked housekeeping if they could use it and they said yes - except for the alcohol. (I don't know if that's a policy or just a personal response.)

Last year someone left a bag in the laundry room at OKW marked "Please Take" it contanined some paperbacks, a 12 pack of Bud, and several unopened snack bags, if they our DIS members "THANK YOU" we put them to good use! We usually look for someone just arriving and ask if they would want the unopened items.

I would be willing to put together the OKW one - heres what I mean -

YOu could PM me with the dates you would be at OKW and, much like the stoller swap worked (Thanks again for that budget board!) the person leaving, could call the person they were passing the "food box" too and arrange for the drop - LOL. Maybe we could get up at the top of the board so it would be easy to find.

For example -

Me - Paulamurf - OKW from 12/5-12/11

So, who is checking in on 12/11 that wants my unopened items??

I'll be at OKW from the 6th to the 10th of Dec and I always have stuff left over too. Mostly frozen food and sodas, but who knows what else. Sorry I don't drink alcohol anymore so that isn't going to be in the bag!!

Anyone checking in on the 10th or 11th that would be interested?

I think, as much of a great idea that it is, it probably won't work.

Food is much different than a stroller. Stroller has one function that fills one need. Food is different in that, many people already have the food they want/need before thay arrive. So, without anyway of knowing what food will be left behind ahead of time, not many people would be interested in taking it.

Does this make sense? I guess you could try it, but I just don't see it working.

Well, I put a bunch of unopened stuff plus a 3/4 full container of Tide in the BWV guest laundry this past Monday. So I hope someone in a studio (since those are the ones using the guest laundry, as all others have in unit) was able to take it back with their clean clothes and put it all to good use.

It's an excellent idea to leave unopened items in the laundry area for the taking. Most likely, someone will pick it up (especially if there is a note indicating that it is there just for that purpose).

I especially like the idea of leaving laundry products and maybe unopened beverages in the laundry room. Everyone ends up buying a small box of Tide and who can use it all??? Not something you want to try to take home on the plane. ::MinnieMo

Maybe we should put a note on stuff we leave in the laundry room saying something like: "This is for any DVC member who needs it. Please take this (fill in the blank) and pass along anything else you are not able to use by the end of your vacation here in the same way".
