Cell Phones, Cell phones, everywhere!

I was a rude cell phone user!! DH and I used them when we got lost, and dh was angry when he couldnt find me, I told him to ask a CM the CM by the safari was lol listening in... which made dh angrier...(he was at the exit, I was at the entrance!)

but when we were on Rafiki's train, my ds called from camp - we hadnt talked to him in 2 weeks - and they needed rides home, and he only had a 20 min break for lunch, all week I had been planning his lunch breaks to be places where I could receive phone calls, I finally forgot, and yep he called in the one place I couldnt get out of line, or move away...I do have to yell, talk loudly you see my boys are both hard of hearing... and they had promised thier sister they would call her while she was at Disney...

so I apologize, I loved hearing my ds's voices. I wish they would've called more often, but I felt lucky those teenagers remembered at all!! and I looked around, I sure would've shared my excitement!!

Since you directed your entire defense novel here at my comment, I would like to shoot one back to you.

I'm not defensive and I didn't intend to direct my "novel" at you, I was speaking to a couple people who replied here with their cell phone use justifications.

That's all.

I don't wish to argue with you, I just wanted to see people's opinions and I have.

Have a lovely day :)

Sorry - that is the way I took it.

Won't get any arguing from me. I see your point, but perhaps I just don't feel as strongly about it as you do. It's all good though!!

I get annoyed at people who are on the phone with me, but having conversations with other people in the room with them. I guess that can be compared with your cell phone annoyance. You know?

I, also, carry my cell phone but I keep it turned off. I then periodically turn it on to check messages from out-of-the-way locations. When done, it gets turned off again.

For me, the problem is the people who keep their phones on inside the actual attractions. Listening to phones ring, and the resulting converstations, inside COP or Spaceship Earth does interfer with "the magic" and it happens all too often.

I don't have any objections to "Hello. I'm at the Haunted Mansion. Okay, bye." I do that all the time, personally.

I'd prefer not to hear the darned things ringing during shows or on rides, though. I keep mine on vibrate whenever I'm at WDW. The vibrate function is great! You can unobstrusively check and see who called, and call them back when you're able to.

If you're going to take or make a call that'll last awhile, go somewhere you can sit down and chat if that's what you're going to do. There's plenty of benches and out of the way places to sit in all the parks.

I also have this memory of a CM at the Adventurers Club trying to do a show and finally yelling "Am I being too LOUD for the woman on the PHONE?" You have to wonder, couldn't she just step outside to have her conversation?

I guess I just don't understand why, when I am in a 20 minute line for Aladdin's magic carpet, or the teacups, it would make ANY difference to anyone whether my 2yr old DD is talking to me (in a conversation that most people would consider trivial, and at the level at which ALL 2 yr olds speak of anything they are excited about...LOUDLY), or whether she is on the phone to "Nana" telling her about the adventures of her day? Either way, she will be talking like a 2 yr old. And, to some people, those conversations might seem trivial or unneccessary...and, in the "big picture"...they are right. My child is not a Dr., she is not a parent trying to find her kids...but, to my mom, those conversations are priceless!!

And, whether I am standing in the street, or standing in line for the teacups...what difference does it make? They are both outdoors and they are both noisy???!!!

True, I do NOT want to hear about someone's explicit date details, or ANY "R" rated adventures in Disney...but, that happens a LOT more between two individuals at WDW than it does with someone on a cell phone.

I would NOT let my DD talk on the phone with Nana at "Victoria and Alberts"...but, then again...I will not TAKE my dd to "Victoria and Alberts" until she is much older (I'm sure all the patrons are glad to hear that). But, if we are at a character bfast, and my dd wants to call her Nana and tell her who she sees....well, you all can just get mad...but, I will let her make that phone call.

I just don't get it? And, if you hear a child telling someone on the phone that "she kissed Mickey's nose" or "gave Snow White a hug" and that bothers you, or seems trivial....I am sorry.

I keep my phone on vibrate in WDW, but I do answer it. And talk to people on it (*gasp*) in lines! Quietly, though. I've honestly rarely heard people yelling on their cells - everything has always been in the same tone of voice I would talk to my husband.

I am guilty of calling my sisters from the Haunted Mansion. :o But I don't speak to them, just hold up the phone so they can hear the music and know I'm there and they're not. *evil cackle*

You are right, those kinds of calls are precious and are certainly should not be left out for the sake of people who may get aggravated at your using a cell phone. Those are the memories your mom will cherish. princess:

Well, no matter what they did...I'm sure there were people who found things to complain about (like, long lines at payphone booths).

Does it bother anyone else to be stuck in line with people for rides who are having unnecessary cell phone conversations?
Better in a line than a restaurant or movie.
It is downright RUDE to be on a cell phone in public places
Unless you are in your own home I think everywhere is public.

i carried a cell phone on our vacation this past july to keep in touch with the rest of my party. while on norway in epcot when i got up to exit the boat i heard a thud and then a splash. rats. there went my cell phone to a watery grave in the nordic waters. i was panicked. then i was pointed out as the cm made a few announcements about holding on to cell phones on exiting the ride while delaying everyone else while they tried earnestly to retreive the poor drowned phone from the water. no luck. people laughed, people pointed, people were not happy being held up. ( i would't be none to happy either). anyway after i got over the initial shock and worry of having lost my cell phone, my means of communication with the world, mostly my kids, i felt o k. no more ringing and no more answering. i felt FREE. it was wonderful. until i got home and then actually needed it.

I have never been in a restaurant where they have requested phones to be turned of.

I've been to several restaurants in Canada that asks for the cellphone to be checked at the coat-check (they will call you if someone calls your phone). The same goes in Australia. Even moreso in Europe.

Of course they are not run-of-the-mill restaurants such as Applebee's or Red Lobster, but I've seen these happenings in more than the digits of my hands and feet can ever count.

I personally don't like cell phones and will never have one. I have been subjected to so many loud & rude people on my daily commuter rail ride that I now move my seat if I see someone with a cell phone. I realize that they can be important to some people, but for me, sometimes I just don't want to be found. For example, for me, it is as much the ring as the talking. I answer phones all day long at work, in fact so much so that I rarely answer the phone at home. I look at the caller id and usually only answer if it's my Mom. When I'm in line at WDW and hear a phone ring, my blood pressure raises automatically. If everyone would use the vibrate function and talk in normal tones I wouldn't care a bit!

Cell phones are part of our current culture. When used with consideration for others around you, they can enhance our lives. When used with a "I should be able to do what ever I want, when I want" attitude they are truly a public annoyance. So folks- go ahead and use your cell phone to communicate with the rest of your party, have discrete conversations in line, etc. , but please put the ringer on vibrate or turn it off inside the attractions so the rest of us are not distracted by ill timed conversations. Thanks !

I hope this isn't gonna be a really 'hot' topic (donning flame resistant jammies LOL)

WOW ...."HOT"?...THIS IS BLUE FLAME BURNING!!!!!!!!!! LOL

All everyone needs to realise is, that when you are using a cell phone while on a line (or 'que' for our UK buddies) at Disney for whatever (business, sentimental, lost hiker, singing teen) reason.....DUE TO THE NOISE LEVEL IN THE PARKS....YOU TEND TO SHOUT...VERY LOUD & DELIBERATE!

It is highly disturbing to those around you. And yes RUDE to keep it up for extended periods of time.

Now, What can we say about people who smoke while on line? Hairy fat men in sleeveless shirts?
What about people who lug 3 month old babies around in 100 degree 100% humidity?
Or better yet .....Everytime (and I mean E V E R Y T I M E) I go on Splash Mountain, there is ALWAYS a woman behind me who complains about getting WET!!!!

I'm in Texas, baby. We have concealed handgun laws. Granted, you cannot carry your gun into Chili's, but almost everything goes here.

Ditto here in Michigan. I don't check my gun or cell phone :teeth:
I don't see how talking on a cell phone differs from carrying on a conversation with the person next to you. As long as it's done in a normal tone and for those people with nextel....GOTO PRIVATE MODE....I love my nextel, but I always use vibrate and private mode!!

I use my Nextel wherever I am. It is mostly used as a home phone since I am hardly home. Always on vibrate as not to bother with the ringer, And I do make it a point to converse in a "normal manner" as though I am talking to someone in line. If the person I am speaking to cannot hear me, I call them back later.

Perhaps the issue should not be Cell Phones Everywhere, but instead People who speak loudly on their phones? As stated before, no matter what, there will be people who just don't get how to use technology properly, and there are just generally rude people, I wonder if they go out looking for more ways to annoy people ;)
