CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

Yet that hasn't enabled humanity to come up with much beyond a shambolic response to this virus thus far. Many can't even seem to accept the idea that it's probably safest to wear a mask to avoid exposure to as many respiratory droplets from others as possible.

I'm all for vaccines. I do however expect them to be fully vetted before rolling up my sleeve.

I agree that our response individually has been by and large terrible. But the response of the medical community has been spectacular.

The Oxford vaccine (leading candidate) was so quick to develop as they had the base ready for infection X for these exact circumstances- all the groundwork was being laid because of MERS etc which went away on its own (too deadly that one to last long).

The testing is exactly the same with phase 1, 2 and now 3 trials, it’s just they overlapped.

They now are deciding when to ‘unblind’ phase 3- they can’t blind it again once unblinded so need to be sure they have enough data.

Vaccines are not about you necessarily, they are about enough of us having it to ensure the immune compromised are unlikely to be exposed.

Fear and misinformation by anti Vaxxers is very dangerous.

Coronavirus vaccines appear to be pretty easy to develop. They’ve recently done one for birds and cattle that are very effective. There was no Coronavirus vaccine for them before either. There’s even one for dogs. The chicken one has to be regularly redone a bit like flu due to that particular Coronavirus mutating quite a lot (which Covid 19 doesn’t seem to do) so they adapt the vaccine to bind with the new spike protein.

If they can do this stuff in chickens, dogs, cats and cattle they can very likely do it in us.

Reason they have not been done before is the two real killer Coronavirus SERS and MERS went away on their own so the vaccine development was placed in hibernation (but thankfully the building blocks of what we have now) and the other 4 are about one of 100 virus that cause the common cold so the resource and need simply wasn’t there to develop one.

I anticipate if you like foreign travel you will be barred from coming to places like Europe, barred from cruise ships etc unless you have had a vaccine. Employers may even insist on it in many jurisdictions.

USA Today poll says 2/3 of Americans won’t get vaccine as soon as it becomes available.
It's really important to note who the participants were of which the headline does not call attention to: "The poll of 1,000 voters" "The poll, taken Aug. 28-31, surveyed registered voters by cell phone and landline and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points."

As with any poll there are limitations. The headlines shouldn't read 2/3rds of Americans because they didn't poll Americans at large. They only polled those who were registered voters.

I wonder when these two thirds will deem it safe to take? What will be the trigger? A year, 5? By then the economy will be in the toilet whilst other countries take advantage of the US economy.

This comment would be laughable if it was not so scary:

I feel like their testing is a trial and error," Dew said. "And I also feel that they don’t really know all that much about this virus, so how can they create a cure for it just yet?”

I think a lot of it is going to come down to what they want to do and who requires it. Will college students be required to get it if they live in the dorm? Will airlines have requirements? We know health care workers will likely have a requirement. But what about other offices? Mass gatherings like professional sports? Much of this story still to be written.

We've maxed out our society's ability to shut down already. Depending on how the trials go, people might need a push. Or be willing to sit out while others get back to normal.

I think this may become a common discussion:

Bob: Hey Bill, you get vaccinated?

Bill: Oh, heck no, Bob!!! I wouldn't get near that thing!

Bob: Too bad- I have 50 yard line seats the game tomorrow.

Bill: Headed to Walgreen's- see you in an hour!

I think so too.

Please note, that doesn't say that 2/3 WON'T get the vaccine, just that they won't get it immediately. And I don't have a problem with that, I'll be one that waits.

Yes scientists say things are "safe". How many of you who will be "first in line" for a vaccine would be willing to be on the first flight of the Max8 when it returns? After all, the "experts" say it's safe, so there's nothing to worry about, right?

I really wish there was also push and focus on treatment. I am sure the medical community is also working on treatment too at the same time. I am willing to get the vaccine at some point ( early than later) I find it just a shame and it does put me a bit off that there is such a push for vaccinate a large group, where the bad effects of actually getting seriously ill are very slim. KWIM? But I guess most vaccinations are like this.. ex. chickenpox... having chickenpox is really no big deal, same with measles, only a VERY, VERY tiny amount have a bad run... but most get the shot.

Ideally I would prefer a therapheutic over a vaccine.

Huge developments being made in treatment. Gilead is currently testing its Remdesivir in an inhaler form, which would make it accessible for early stage patients. There is a preventative in pill form being tested in nursing homes right now. And we will have "antibody cocktail" drugs by the end of the year, which are believed to both prevent and treat.

Yup. And boy aren't they clever. FWIW it's not just this article or poll. Others are clever with their wordings to.

The numbers actually are:
23% would not take the vaccine at all
44% would not take the vaccine until others have tried it
27% would take the vaccine as soon as it's available
6% undecided

The way they word is is they lump the "would not take the vaccine at all" and the "would not take the vaccine until others have tried it" all together so they can have that catchy headline. Of course they added the careful qualifier of "when it's first available"..but we do know how those headlines get ya. It got the other poster who pasted in the article.

When you actually look at it the bulk of people are willing to take it but don't want to be in that initial crowd which is honestly quite reasonable in my mind; I totally get the concern over a brand new vaccine. It's fairly close split between the two extremes (for lack of a better term) those who would not get it at all and those who will get it immediately.

Chickenpox is a very different ballgame to measles.

They don’t even vaccinate chicken pox many places including UK.

Measles kills more than Covid that in infects- mainly kids.

Uh, the independent experts DON'T say the Max 8 is safe. Boeing is the only one saying that...
