CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

This trend is throughout the NE USA. The NYT just did an article on it. It's alarming for sure but really hoping that continuing vaccinations will put an end to it.

Yes...saw that article too. There's concern about the NYC variant in our area. I've heard Scott Gottlieb talking about it a lot recently. It seems like our Governor here in NJ is continuing to move forward with opening. I think we're up to 50% indoor dining now..or maybe starting tomorrow. He's watching hospitalizations, and as long as they're not spiking (they're not so far...and hopefully won't)....I think he's going to continue moving us forward. Like you, hoping vaccinations pick up even more to knock these numbers down.

So called our local Kaiser, which is minutes away from our house to see about being put on a list for any unused doses and they told me that both DH and I qualify to make actual appointments. So he's booked for Monday and I'm booked for next Thursday (although they were trying to switch mine to Monday to match his when I got disconnected, so on hold again). But either way it looks like next week for both us!

I'm not exactly sure how we qualify, but I'm not questioning it.

ETA: Decided to keep my Thursday appt. Should we both have any side effects, I decided spacing them out might be a better idea than us getting our second doses the same day. Especially with our kids returning to in person school and dance.

Nice! That's great news! I just got a form from the State Senator that I reached out to and they sent me a form to fill out....with all of my info, insurance card, driver's license...etc. So I'm hoping this will get me somewhere too.

It is hard to see any rhyme or reason in it, at least so far. The high and fast increases are mostly in rural parts of the state, but it is too early in the year to blame tourist season for speeding the spread. It is happening mainly in areas that are likely to have high vaccine hesitancy, but that's probably not a big factor yet because all supply is getting used. Restaurants opened six weeks ago, so that may be a factor that is worse in places with more skeptical attitudes about mitigation efforts. But it can be hard to draw any conclusions from some of these areas because of the small populations. My county is the most populous of the ones that are really struggling right now, with 160K residents, but some of the northern counties only have 20 or 30K people in total so a relatively small cluster can make for a very large cases per 100K rate. A few are so small that you basically just have to discard the data entirely; right now, there's a county that has had 3 cases this week, which translates into a rate of 47 cases per 100K. Last week their rate was 0, and it probably will be again next week if history is any guide.

Some of the more urban/suburban counties are seeing increases as well, but slower and more gradual. We're still not doing much genetic sequencing, so it is hard to know if a particular variant plays any role. Four cases of the UK variant have been identified in my county, none of them apparently connected to one another, so we know it is out there but no clue on overall prevalence.

A recent article in the Detroit paper blames school sports, specifically basketball, for many outbreaks, which is consistent with what we've seen in our local schools. It is basically a contact sport, has to be played indoors, players don't keep their masks on properly because they tend to slide down or get dislodged during play, and we have a lot of kids who play (for example, the local high school has boys' freshman and both boys' and girls' JV and varsity teams, so 5 teams total, each with different schedules that bring them into contact with students from different schools two or three times a week). Classroom spread still doesn't appear to be a factor. The problem appears to be all the school-adjacent things where mask enforcement is lax or non-existent, like sports and buses and carpooling and going out for pizza after class.

Just saw this...

Let's just not repeat their mistakes.

Looks like the UK is doing pretty well now too.

I don't think we could repeat their mistakes, at this point, unless we worked pretty hard to do so. We've already got 3x as many people (percentage wise) vaccinated as most EU countries, and I've read some really alarming refusal rate surveys from France and I think Italy suggesting that half of their residents don't plan on getting it even when they do get the distribution straightened out. All the bickering over the A-Z vaccine certainly isn't helping matters any, either. The UK is doing a good job with their vaccination effort and a big chunk of their supply has been A-Z right from the start, but EU countries are still waffling over whether it is really safe enough to use.

Anecdotally from my Greek dad, the same is true there with vaccine hesitancy. None of his family plans on getting it.

We do have pockets of antivaxxers throughout the US, so I expect some areas to have low turn out with people getting vaccinated. We'll know more as the age drops. I get older people getting it as they're more likely to die from it. I wonder if we'll start seeing push back from younger folks who aren't afraid of dying from it.

My 4 kids (18 - 23) can not wait to get it. My 22 year old qualified since she subs on occasion so she got her first shot yesterday. My 18 year old qualifies because he is a big boy (BMI meets the requirements) so he is scheduled for April 25th but I am trying to move it up. He plays football so trying to schedule around that is a bit of a challenge. Still waiting on my 20 year old and 23 year old. The 23 year old live in Philadelphia but still has his NY license so if I can get him something in Binghamton before he is eligible in PA I will. All of my daughters friends who are nursing students have already gotten it. No vaccine hesitancy here.

ETA: I was just able to book the 18 year old for next Tuesday at a CVS for the J&J.

What hasn't been really addressed is how they are going to address the homeless populations and low income/poverty areas, because bottom line neither of those groups are going to be fighting for slots. The good news is there is a good chance alot oft hem have had covid whether they knew it or not since they are also groups less likely to get tested.

I just checked sites this morning for Northern Ohio and there is nothing at all popping up. Even at the mass vaccine site that is doing 6000 a day 7 days a week. Today opened to 40+ as well as obesity and other conditions. I am glad I got an appointment the other day for DH to get his first vaccine on Thursday.

I have heard in Ohio that they are saving the J&J vaccine for this. I heard one of the hospitals in Cleveland is giving it to the homeless. Cleveland is also putting a mobile site together to get in the communities that are low income/poverty area. I heard this will be the J&J as well.
