Broward, Miami dads, and palm beach are options on Publix. I’m looking at them right now. To book appointments in the populous counties you need to be online at exactly 7am. If you don’t mind driving some counties are still open.

Interesting. The drop down box I saw on the site didn't list those countries. Maybe, it was due to those counties not having appointments available. I'll keep trying.

You literally can't go one day without hearing someone from the CDC, NIH or the government overall quite openly begging people to get vaccinated. There's a lot of fear mongering in other media outlets that is keeping a whole lot of people from getting vaccinated. It's all over social media. And we all know where it's coming from. I'm no so sure that a lot of those followers are going to run out and get a vaccine because the CDC tells them they can go to a Nascar race maskless if they do so. A lot of these people don't even believe that the virus is real. The CDC didn't put that message out. So much damage has been done to the credibility of these scientific institutions....that it will be very difficult to turn that around. The CDC made mistakes with testing early on...and other mistakes for sure, for one having a leader who was almost totally silenced. But underselling the vaccine is not one of them.
The CDC was a tool, and they definitely undersold the vaccine:

A girl who works at the salon I go to told me she isn't getting it. She is mid 20s, probably. When I asked her why not, she said "because they say it can affect fertility and I want to have kids someday." I tried to tell her that wasn't really a concern and that she had gotten some inaccurate information and I urged her to speak to her doctor and reconsider. She then doubled down, saying "well, I'm not really worried about getting Covid anyway. I'd be fine, cause I'm young and healthy."

At that point, I just smiled and said "Yeah, I get that." I didn't want to ruffle any feathers, because I genuinely like this salon!

Lots of crazy hair people. Mine is a nutter too. I blame Fox News.

Soon after posting here, my DS was able to get an appointment for today at Central Broward Regional park. :cheer2: From the time we got there, until we were leaving, it took about 25 minutes. There was no line at all. I asked, if the same site would be vaccinating 50+ on Monday. The lady said they were waiting for a directive from Tallahassee, but most likely would be. DH & I are hoping to get an appt. there next week, but we'll take an appt. anywhere we can get one. FWIW, they were administering the Pfizer vaccine.

We do have pockets of antivaxxers throughout the US, so I expect some areas to have low turn out with people getting vaccinated. We'll know more as the age drops. I get older people getting it as they're more likely to die from it. I wonder if we'll start seeing push back from younger folks who aren't afraid of dying from it.

Pockets, to be sure, but nothing like half of the total population, which is what some European nations are seeing in surveys. Our vaccine hesitancy numbers, on the other hand, have fallen a bit since the start of the roll out and the last I saw was around 25%. That's a big difference, literally the difference between allowing for widespread contagion vs. pop-up hot spots that flare in unvaccinated clusters and then burn out.

What hasn't been really addressed is how they are going to address the homeless populations and low income/poverty areas, because bottom line neither of those groups are going to be fighting for slots. The good news is there is a good chance alot oft hem have had covid whether they knew it or not since they are also groups less likely to get tested.

First, many areas are addressing that. One of the reasons my daughter had a relatively easy time getting the vaccine was because she lives in a targeted zip code in a high poverty/high homelessness neighborhood of her city. Her freshman roommate, a nursing major, is volunteering with a group that is planning on pop-up J&J clinics to target the homeless population in the areas where they congregate. In Detroit, Sunday clinics are being scheduled at churches that serve poorer neighborhoods to reach the people where they are. I'm sure all of these things will only expand and multiply as additional vaccine supply to support them becomes available.

Second, I don't think it is a fair assumption that those in lower income/high poverty areas aren't interested in vaccines just because they lack either the time, the internet access, or the mental energy of taking on "fighting for slots" (which I think is an apt description of the current state of things) as a new hobby the way so many middle class people are right now. That makes as much sense as saying the elderly who have struggled to navigate primarily/solely web-based appointment systems aren't interested. Right now, we have a system designed by educated, tech savvy, middle-to-upper class professionals that works best for educated, tech savvy, middle-to-upper class professionals. But as supply begins to catch up with demand and the system becomes less competitive, other groups will have an easier time navigating it.

Maybe coincidental, or not? Many states that have been doing better than the US average with vaccinations are the same states that have seen a recent rise in new cases.

So what's your hypothesis here?

Was not suggesting anything. Just noting a correlation.
Could be nothing. Could be the population in areas with higher vaccination rates feeling a sense of invincibility and going back to a pre-pandemic lifestyle.

I got an appointment!! It was through my state senator's office because I'm on the list to volunteer as a vaccinator. Tuesday afternoon....not sure which vaccine I'm getting, but will take what I get. I am not a crier.....and I cried a little. Happy tears. Can't wait to get get vaxxed....and to vax other people too! :)

This can't be right. Does the CDC have any credibility anymore?

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/19/us/cdc-schools-three-feet-covid.html

The evidence and data show that if the kids wear a mask at all times, they're just as safe as 6 feet. The local superintendent said today that the kids have had no issues with wearing a mask all day.

Our schools have been in session since August (as have others), with only 3 feet and masks.

Schools have been ok. A class or some kids get quarantined for exposure, but the rest of the school continues.

No big outbreak reported and no news making deaths or long haul cases.

Families have had the option for online, if they chose.

So 3 ft distance is about how you’d normally stand near someone, even pre-covid. Unless they’re a close talker of course

Kids wearing masks at all time. What's the likelihood of that happening? I see plenty of adults that can't even keep it over their nose. They're just drama queens.

It's been happening in our district since Sept. Kids have no issues wearing masks. It's the adults who cry like babies about it.

Seriously, though, if a kid won't wear a mask at school here, after 3 strikes, they are booted out of in person learning for the semester and have to do the virtual academy.

Most of my friends that have kids in school say they get quite a few mask breaks and even some said teachers just don't say anything when the kids pull it down and such, its one of those things many just send their kid to school with it and let the school deal with it.

I think in the beginning a lot of people thought it would be a nightmare for kids to be in-person with masks but I think it's become more clear that kids don't see masks as the same big issue as adults do. I'm sure they aren't 100% perfect but it really doesn't appear they make as big of a fuss about them as one might have originally thought.

It’s just like any other behavior. If the parents are acting like kids with masks or taking it lightly, the more likely their kids will as well. Good thing the schools here around me, especially the private schools, have a very strict masking and distancing policy. That strictness actually has encouraged more parents here to want to send their kids to in-person.

BTW, where’s the updates on COVID case numbers. There was someone here who’s been religiously posting regular updates. But, haven’t seen recently.
