Cass & Rob do Vegas, Disney style! :) Trip Report with pics!

Figuring we should walk off some of those burger calories, we made the bone-headed decision to walk to the Venetian. It was really hot and crowded and much further than we had anticipated.

We made use of every single opportunity to NOT actually move our feet :faint:
IMG_2586.jpg

It seemed like an eternity before we arrived at our destination. I thought I was going to really love this place…yeah, not-so-much.

So I started to write a pre-trip report on my website

(you can read it and see pics here: http://cassworld.ca/vegas08.htm)

but decided to post the actual report on the DIS because it’s so much easier to add/edit/post the photos in the forums.

Ok, let’s get started!

Day 1 October 13th, 2008

Unlike when we go to Disney, I was actually able to get some sleep the night before we left! Got to bed around midnight and was awakened by my alarm at 4 AM. When I went to bed, I almost forgot to set the alarm. I haven’t used an alarm clock since Kira was born almost 2 years ago, I almost forgot how to set it LOL!

Showered and got ready, packed the last of my stuff while Rob did the same. My sister picked us up at 5:30 and off to the airport we went!

Yay, vacation time!!
IMG_2312.jpg

We had checked-in online the day before so we got into the line to drop off our bags. There was a long line to get through the US Customs Pre-clearance area but we made it through with no problems and although we were still in Calgary, we were technically in the USA now!

Still looks like Canada to me
IMG_2315.jpg

Rob was trembling by this time and he desperately needed some Tim Horton’s coffee. Unfortunately, they don’t offer bagels at the airport location so I just skipped breakfast. Rob got a donut and muffin and his coffee and was all happy again.

Rob and his addiction...
IMG_2314.jpg

We had an uneventful 2 hour flight to Las Vegas and landed just after 10 AM. I wasn’t expecting to land in Terminal 1 as our airline is still listed as being in Terminal 2. So after a very long trek to the luggage belt, we still waited about 20 minutes before any luggage even came down.

IMG_2324.jpg

Buh bye Calgary!
IMG_2326.jpg

Hello Lost Wages!
IMG_2336.jpg

Oh look, the Hoover Dam! Can you see Megatron??
IMG_2340.jpg

Been here for 5 whole minutes and he's working already!
IMG_2350.jpg

Grabbed our bags and headed outside for the shuttle to the Car Rental place. They’ve moved all the car rental places to one off-site area now, which is rather convenient actually. Found the Dollar area and skipped the counter and went straight to the garage booth since we are Fastbreak members. It took awhile but eventually we had our papers in hand and were told to wait at the line for the guy to show us to our car. I had booked a “Lock low and go” rate which means we would get at least an intermediate vehicle. The guy took our papers, said “Ahhh a wild card!!” and looked around to what few vehicles he had left. He said to me “This doesn’t happen often, but go ahead and pick one of those Pacifica’s”, to which I replied…”Cool! What’s a Pacifica?” He smirked and told me it’s an SUV. Ok, so we head off in the direction of two sort-of SUV-looking vehicles and pick the red one.

Did the once-over to check for dings and scratches and off we went! A right, a right and a right and we were on the strip!

Look, a Pacifica!
IMG_2352.jpg

Welcome to Las Vegas, please leave your paycheque with guest services when you check in, thank you, thank you very much!
IMG_2361.jpg

This is where we really wanted to stay...
IMG_2364.jpg

But this is where we stayed..

IMG_2365.jpg

Proceeded to the Luxor and got us checked-in. Our room was ready but we were STARVING so we went to the Food Court to get some Nathan’s. The fries were amazing as always but the hot dog was gross!! The bun was so stale, it was falling apart. Now it’s not often that I find a hot dog that I don’t like but this was just not edible! Good thing I filled up on fries LOL!

On our way out, Rob grabbed an ice cream. I took one lick (usually my limit as I am not an ice cream girl) and then asked him where his was!! It was soooo good!! We devoured it together while waiting in line to get our Players Club cards.

Do you see the ickiness??
IMG_2372.jpg

Back off buster, it's all mine!!!

IMG_2374.jpg

Finally we grabbed our luggage from the car and headed to the East Tower to find our room. I had requested an airport view, and we got it. Well, it was a partial airport view but we could see planes land and take off all day long so we were happy. The room, which was a Player Deluxe Room was awesome! It had a 42” Plasma screen TV, a nice little work area with internet, a mini-bar area with a little fridge and the comfiest BED I have ever slept on!!!!!!! And the best pillows ever to boot!!!

IMG_2396.jpg

After unpacking all our junk we would be using for the next 6 days, we decided to do some touring. The Mandalay Bay was being built the last time we were in Vegas so I was anxious to finally see it. I had really wanted to stay here but the rooms were still $249/night just before we left and that was just too pricey for us!

There is a lovely walkway between the Luxor and MB called Mandalay Place which is filled with shops and restaurants. We nicknamed it the wind tunnel as we got blasted with 30 mph winds each time we entered it. I meant to get a picture of my hair blowing in the wind but I never did.

As we descended the escalators into MB, I fell in love….with the smell! OMG, it smelled gooooood in here!

You see, I’m a smell girl, as Rob likes to call me. I never thought of myself as having a sensitive nose but I like me a good smell!!! I often remember things from their smell. Good and bad. It’s one of my least favourite things about going to Disney World, you come across a lot of really stinky people. In Vegas, however, you come across a lot of good smelling people. For me, what turns my head is not a good looking chap, but rather a good smelling one! I still remember walking into the Tropicana the very first time ten years ago, I was walking past a very well dressed gentleman who was getting into his car. He wasn’t particularly good looking, but he smelled fabulous!!!!!! While my body continued to walk away, my nose lingered a few extra seconds just so I could smell him. LOL!

Continued in the next post....

We were just in Vegas for our honeymoon! We stayed Oct. 14-18. We were at Treasure Island and I have to say THOSE were the comfiest beds I've ever been in! I also LOVED Mandalay Bay! And for the exact same reason as you. It was the best smelling hotel I've ever been in. The best buffet we had was the dinner at the RIO. OMG. I've never seen such a huge selection of food and it was soooo good. The only show we got to see was Zummanity. It was pretty cool. the ending was kinda boring though. I wish I was back there again. Sigh.

Day 5, October 17th 2008

Today was the whole reason we planned a trip to Vegas. Today was our tenth wedding anniversary! Wow, 10 years already! That went fast. We’re both pretty proud of our marriage. While it’s not perfect, we’ve worked really hard to make it a really good one. We’ve had our moments where we’ve wanted to choke each other for a few brief moments, but those moments pass quickly and they are few and far between.

We both feel extremely lucky to have found each other and we say it every day! Yup, every single day! Not a day goes by in our life that we don’t tell the other person how much they are loved and needed and appreciated and desired and wanted.

There’s nothing in this harsh and cruel world that you can’t get through if you know that there is someone who feels that way about you and shows it to you every day!

While we are truly black and white when it comes down to our views and opinions, deep down, Rob and I are soul mates. We are made from the same cloth and even though we have our challenges and tough times ahead, we both know that we will be together forever. Toujours. That word is inscribed on the inside of our wedding bands. It means Forever.

Okay, enough with the mushy stuff already

We didn’t have any plans for breakfast because we wanted to have an early lunch at a very special place. Rob could not survive until lunch though so he went down to the deli and got some coffee and some fruit.

We took our time this morning didn’t leave the hotel until about 11 am.

The leaning towers of City Center

IMG_2633.jpg

Down the strip we go…right on Harmon and oh look, more construction!

Our destination?

The Hard Rock Café

IMG_2644.jpg

The Hard Rock is kind of “our place”. When we first started dating, we wanted to go to a place neither one of us had been to before and the Hard Rock Café in downtown Calgary was that place! We fell in love with the great food, atmosphere and service. It was a place we went to often.

Two years after we met, Rob proposed at the Hard Rock Café. Although we already knew we were going to get married (pretty much 3 weeks after we met actually, believe it or not ::yes::) , Rob wanted to wait until he had a nice ring to give me and back then he was a student so he was pretty broke LOL.

Ever since then, we always make a point of going to Hard Rock Café’s wherever we go. We’ve been to quite a few already and hope to make that list even longer soon! We have quite the HRC t-shirt collection now! :lmao:

They’ve closed all the Western Canadian HRC’s, including the one where we got engaged, and now only 5 are left in Canada, all in the east.

So we thought the HRC was the perfect place for lunch on our anniversary! It’s been 10 years since we’ve eaten there but it hasn’t changed much at all. They’ve expanded the store but everything else is the same. We had a really great waitress and were seated in a booth. We told our waitress that it was our 10th anniversary and our little history with the HRC. The manager came over and congratulated us and was genuinely happy that we were having lunch there.

Mostly Elvis stuff in this HRC!
IMG_2634.jpg

Happy to be in a booth ;)
IMG_2635.jpg

Rob ordered the herb grilled chicken

IMG_2636.jpg

And I ordered something I haven’t ordered in a long time…the beef fajitas!

IMG_2640.jpg

I haven’t ordered it since Kira was born because the steak and peppers come out on a very hot pan and it takes up a lot of room at the table, and I don’t want to take any chances!

The beef was very rare so I asked if they could cook it a little longer for me. This took quite a long time. Rob was almost done his meal by the time I got my beef back!

Where’s the beef?
IMG_2639.jpg

That’s ok, I munched on Rob’s mashed potatoes while waiting LOL!

About half way through my meal, our waitress stopped by and told us to save room in our tummies as they wanted to buy us dessert. How sweet!

We decided on the warm brownie sundae to share and they brought us a Vegas wedding pin along with our dessert, cool! This was really good!!!

IMG_2641.jpg

Then she asked us our names. Without even thinking, I told her and not 2 seconds later she was screaming out our names to everyone in the restaurant! LOL! Actually, she had this whole big spiel…something like “Could I have your attention everyone, Rob and Cass are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary with us today. They came all the way from Canada to be with us on their special day so let’s all sing a song for them!” and then they all sang a song. I was mortified!! I had no idea they would do that! In all the times I have been to Hard Rock’s, I have never heard them sing anything, not even Happy Birthday!

Oooook.

I’m the kind of person that will only go out for dinner on my birthday if EVERYONE in my party agrees NOT to disclose that it’s my birthday. If they even HINT at the fact that it’s my birthday, I am out of there! I usually just stay home to avoid that kind of attention (read harassment) so yeah, I wasn’t in my happy place.

It was a really good lunch but I could have lived without the singing.

After lunch we had wanted to ride Speed The Ride, the rollercoaster at the Sahara. We took the back road there to avoid the Strip but we ran into more construction so it still took awhile. We pulled up to the valet and she asked us if we were checking in. Rob said “Nope, we’re here to ride a coaster!” and then she informed us that the coaster is now closed, permanently! What??? I had just checked the hours of operation on their website this morning. There was nothing about it being closed! Grrrrr.

What a waste of time! Oh well, back to the strip to our hotel. We spent the next few hours in our room. Sorry, no details for you!

Showered and purtied up one more time!

Sitting on my bench waiting for the car.
IMG_2658.jpg

Drove to Palazzo (after staking out the restaurant yesterday, we deemed it much closer to park at Palazzo than at the Venetian!) and valeted the car once again.

No one opened my door.:snooty:

Not classy!

Snapped a quick pic as we pulled up
IMG_2660.jpg

And then we walked over to Delmonico.

One more photo opportunity

IMG_2663.jpg

We got there about 15 minutes early and were seated right away. The person that checked us in at the booth wished us a happy anniversary. When I called to make the reservation, they asked if we were celebrating anything, so it was a nice touch when they congratulated us!

I wasn’t too pleased with where we sat though. It wasn’t a booth (I don’t think they had booths:mad: ) and it was right next to the entrance of the kitchen. We saw tons of waiters go back and forth a lot over the next hour and a half!

Normally I would say something but I kind of felt out of place here. This was a fancy-schmancy kind of place and I was totally out of my element.

I really shouldn’t have felt different, after all we were nicely dressed, better than a lot of other people in the place (there were a few tables with people dressed in jeans and t-shirts!) but I just didn’t feel comfortable so I never said anything about our crappy table. :guilty:

IMG_2664.jpg

Our main server, Jennifer introduced herself (and also wished us a happy anniversary!) and she also introduced our other 2 assistant servers (yes, we had 3 servers!) She asked if we wanted anything to drink so I got a diet-pepsi and Rob asked for a coffee.

Simple right?

Not in this place!

She asked Rob what kind of coffee he would like.

Rob was out of his element too. He wasn’t prepared to have to choose his coffee LOL!:rotfl2:

She offered him 3 choices I believe and he settled on the French Press.

Coffee and diet-pepsi was delivered in quick order!

And then Jennifer offered us some buns. Sure, I’m starving!

These were delicious!!! They were warm and soft and the butter melted right over them! They were soooo good! I had just put the last morsel of my bun in my mouth and not 2 seconds later she appeared with more!

A few minutes later two of the servers appeared with something for us. I had read online that they usually offer their customers with celebrations an amuse bouche. Which is French for mouth pleasing and is usually made up of small tasty treat to tempt your taste buds.

She never said what it was so I have no idea what it was exactly.:confused3 It was a rather delicious piece of beef over a bed of some kind of puffed-rice like sort of pasta. LOL! A true connoisseur eh? Maybe one of you foodies could tell me what it was because I have no idea. Unfortunately I didn’t get a really good picture of it. I didn’t feel very comfortable with taking pictures of my food here so I pretended to take a picture of Rob (with his food! HAHA!)

IMG_2665.jpg

Oh, I forgot the mention what we ordered! My first thought was to order the filet mignon but I wanted this dinner to be memorable so we chose something we have never had before, Chateaubriand for two. I had done some research online before we left and found out just exactly what Chateaubriand was. It is the thick middle cut from the tenderloin. The smaller end pieces of the tenderloin make up filet mignon and the larger ends make up tournedo. I already knew we both loved filet mignon so I thought this would be a good choice for us.

The menu says it includes vegetable of the day but it doesn’t mention anything about potatoes but when we ordered it, Jennifer said it also comes with garlic smashed potatoes, yum! But I also wanted to try the Truffle parmesan potato chips because I had read so many good things about these so I got an order of them to share.

Although once they came and I tasted them, there was NO WAY I wanted to share these!! Not even with Rob LOL! Ok, well I did but thankfully he was saving room for his dinner and hardly touched them!!! OMG, these were incredible!! How can a chip be so good you ask??? I don’t know but if you ever go to Delmonico, you must order these! They came out so fresh and still warm. :cloud9:

I had no problem paying $10.50 for these babies!!!
IMG_2666.jpg

Then our meal came. Jennifer rolled a cart over and carved our Chateaubriand right there, tableside! I made sure she was ok with me taking a picture and then everyone watched as she prepared our dinner. She carved Rob’s beef and added asparagus and potatoes to his plate and served him. Knowing that I like my meat a little more cooked than Rob, she seared mine a little in the pan and then added the asparagus and potatoes to my plate as well before serving me.

She was very good at what she does!
IMG_2667.jpg

The first thing I tasted, of course, was the potatoes. OMG!! These were the BEST potatoes I have ever tasted!!! They were so tasty and creamy and still hot. The beef was really good too! Not the best I’ve had but top 5 for sure! I tried the asparagus and it was ok but I’m not a veggie girl.

Rob ate all his asparagus though and loved it! He thought his beef was really good too and enjoyed the potatoes. Well, half his potatoes….I ate the other half :rolleyes1

Hey, I gave him my asparagus!

It was funny because he was telling me how much he loved the outside part of his beef just as he looked down to my plate where he noticed that I had cut off that part of mine and pushed it to the side LOL!

Hello potatoes!!! Where have you been all my life?

IMG_2668.jpg

We were both pretty full but since it was our anniversary we decided to have dessert. I ordered the Chocolate Peanut Butter Torte and Rob got the Coconut Pineapple Upside down cake.

Neither of them were all that appetizing so we only had a few bites of each.

IMG_2669.jpg

Rob was still enjoying his coffee so we lingered for a while longer. He was so impressed with this coffee that he asked Jennifer about it. I don’t remember much since I don’t drink coffee and wasn’t really paying all that much attention to what she said but I did catch the fact that they grind the beans right there after you order it, so I’m sure that made a difference!

Rob had made a comment about maybe trying the other types of coffee they offered but I shot that idea down real quick! I don’t even remember coffee being on the menu so I know that he had no idea how much it cost but I told him that my guess is that the coffee is about $12. He said “Oh” and decided against trying the other two LOL! :lmao:

He took a picture of it as we were leaving LOL!
IMG_2670.jpg

Well, I was spot on, the coffee was exactly $12 and our total bill with 20% tip came to $200!

The meal (except the dessert) was well worth it and we both had to be rolled out of the restaurant. :woohoo:

Continued in the next post...

We got the car and drove over to Bellagio. We had to get there early to pick up our tickets to “O” but we got there really early so we decided to go outside and watch the fountains for awhile. The fountains are the only part of Bellagio that I don’t hate. ;)

Well, that’s not entirely true. I have to give it a shout out because one of my favourite movies, Ocean’s 11 (the remake of course) was filmed there. But the fact that they took the Bellagio for all it’s worth was the best part of that movie LOL!!! :cool1:

Sorry but I have had nothing but bad experiences there. :crazy2:

The one that sticks out the most (and still bugs me to this day!) was on my first visit there 10 years ago. They used to have these big comfy chairs right near the entrance in front of the check-in area. We had been walking all day and my feet were killing me! (This was before Crocs  ) We had sat down on those chairs to rest for a few minutes and I put my foot up a little. It wasn’t ON the chair, my calf was on the chair with my foot hanging off a little. Well a Bellagio bellman came along and said really rudely “This isn’t a mall missy!” and smacked my foot really hard! So hard that my foot came crashing down to the ground, twisting my ankle! :headache:

Ok, so I can kind of understand that he might be a little upset that my leg was up (but really, it wasn’t that bad, I wasn’t laying on the chair with my feet up or anything!) but he could have had the decency to politely ask me to remove my leg!! And I would have done so. There was absolutely NO NEED at all for physical violence here!. Basty Nastard!!!

So after being physically assaulted during my very first visit to this upper-crust(y) establishment, it had soured me to open myself up to enjoy anything else that this hotel may have offered.

So after getting our tickets we got out of there as fast as we could! We strolled around the lake and watched 3 or 4 fountain shows. We were just enjoying the scenery and the company, it was really quite nice actually.

Eventually it was time go back in and head to the theatre. We found our seats (first row of the upper section) which were awesome and then just admired the theatre while everyone else herded into the theatre with 5 minutes to spare!

The only thing I asked the guy was to get us and the O in the picture :rolleyes1

IMG_2735.jpg

We got there early and got bored LOL!

IMG_2733.jpg

While we were watching everyone find their seats, I spotted a woman coming up the stairs. I remember thinking to myself that she looked a LOT like Suzanne Somers. Well her and her party ended up sitting exactly two rows behind us and as soon as she started talking, I knew it WAS her!

I told Rob that Suzanne Somers was sitting behind us and he just laughed at me! He didn’t believe me! :snooty:
He said “We have better seats than Suzanne Somers? Right!” Hahaha:lmao:

Then some of the ushers started mumbling to each other and pointing in her direction and acting all star struck, and he started to think I might be right LOL!

I told him that we can stick around after the show and see her! popcorn::

Oh yeah, the show…

Hmmm it was ok. A little too freaky for our liking. It had some cool stuff in it but I liked Le Reve better. I guess it didn’t help that the theatre was freezing!! I am very rarely cold and it’s usually when I am sick or really, really tired but this place was freezing. I was sitting right next to the wall where people entered the theatre and there must have been A/C right there because I felt the wall and it was really cold! :cold:

I was glad when the show was finally over and was able to warm up!

We waited till the crowd dispersed (Suzanne Somers included!) and then picked up our car at the valet. This was by far the longest we waited for our car!

Back to our hotel, into comfy clothes and I got to snack on the rest of those incredible chips from dinner that I had asked for a doggie bag for! They were just as good 6 hours later! We watched some more Indy and then enjoyed our last sleep in that heavenly bed!:cloud9:

Almost done!
Next up is our final day and travel day home!

Happy anniversary once again Cass! It sounds like you had a yummy dinner at Delmonicos and I'm so glad for you ... but next time don't hesitate to ask for a different table if you want one. :thumbsup2

So many people have commented on how good those chips are ... if we ever have a chance to eat there we will have to try them.

Thanks for sharing your day with us ...

Holy crap Brenda, that was fast!! I was still fine tuning my post while you were reading :goodvibes I added the dessert photo that I forgot about.

Yeah, I should have asked for a different table :sad2: Oh well, live and learn right?

I forgot to mention that when we were at the HRC, we toasted your special day too! I figured it was an appropriate place for it :thumbsup2

Our anniversary is also oybolshoi's birthday :woohoo: So Happy Birthday Brenda! :goodvibes

Classy dinner!
Did you feel like the Luxor was out of the way of everything you were doing? There's a code out for it, but I remember feeling like it was far from everything when I stayed there in 99.

If you are walking everywhere then yes, I would say that it's a little far from things. Plus I wouldn't stay in a Pyramid room because they haven't been refurbished in 10 years but I would stay in a Tower room. If you have a car then it's not a big deal really, just leave a little early if you have reservations anywhere :thumbsup2

Sounds like a delicious birthday meal ::yes::

I've been lurking here and reading about your fabulous LV trip. I feel like I'm reliving your trip with you. My DH and I have been to LV twice -- once for our 10th wedding anniversary and during the Victoria Day long weekend in May this year. Wish you had gone before us, so I could've known about Delmonico's. The potato chips sounded so yummy. Your pics are so descriptive of your experience there. I also didn't know about the burger place in Paris -- your burger and fries looked so delish!

She never said what it was so I have no idea what it was exactly. It was a rather delicious piece of beef over a bed of some kind of puffed-rice like sort of pasta.

I think your puffed-rice that looked like pasta is risotto.

We gambled at MGM and I won $105 at the penny slots. I now think MGM is a great place to gamble.

I'm getting so hungry reading your posts. Too bad your TR can't go on forever -- such a good read!!!

Good for you winning your $105 :woohoo: It's fun when you win huh? ::yes::

It wasn't risotto, I know that much. I tried risotto on the cruise last time and have seen it prepared a few different ways. I would say this was more like a pasta or bean of some kind. :confused3 but it looked like a rounded version of rice. Guess I should have asked her what it was

Perhaps it was lentils??? Does that sound like something they might serve or is that just all wrong?? :lmao: :rotfl2:

Cass, what a coincidence, guess where we went today?? We celebrated our DS's16 Confirmation at the Boston Hard Rock Cafe! Isn't that funny?! It was great, he's such a musician so he loves this place. Loving your report, and pulling my DH over to the computer every night to see the pics, since he was just there last week. He's like, ya, I was there and "right over there" is such and such...so fun. His favorite part of MGM was going to see those lions. He went every single day to see them and hear the trainers with them. It would have been so much fun to have experienced it with him, maybe someday. If I can ever pull myself away from DW. Did you hear that my oldest son (20) is doing the college program there in January (till May)?! He'll be in "attractions". How cool is that. Hey, I hate to see this report end, love you guys!
