Hope you guys had fun in vegas!!!!

Hey there!
DH has been to Vegas about 6-7 times now in the past couple of years. I've lost track. He's stayed at a few of these places. Leave it to you however to provide me with pics & a review of the place. :rotfl:

He's taken the "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" way too seriously. I know absolutely nothing about his trips.

Thanks for posting.

His last trip was mid-Sept.

Day Two, October 14th, 2008

I woke up around 7am, which is 8 am Calgary time and also happens to be the time that Kira usually wakes up at home. I tried sleeping in, really I did! It’s something I was looking forward to this trip. I like sleep. Sleep is good. I don’t get much of it though.

I am a really good sleeper.

As long as it’s between the hours of 4 AM and noon. :rolleyes1

Unfortunately, Kira is not a night owl like her parents, so even though I often go to bed by midnight, I toss and turn until 3 or 4 AM. I am just getting into a nice deep sleep when she starts to stir in the early morning.

So, I was really looking forward to sleeping till noon.

Apparently, my daughter subliminally tampered with my subconscious because every morning at 7 AM I was wide awake! I even tried to go back to sleep a few mornings but was unsuccessful at all attempts.

By the time I got out of the shower, Rob was semi-conscious and once I got my blow dryer going, he really didn’t have much of a choice about sleeping in anymore

So we got ready and went in search of breakfast. The quickest and easiest option was the Pyramid Café in the Luxor. This time my request for a booth was met and we were seated rather quickly. Rob decided to order the Pecan French Toast and I ordered Ham & Eggs.

My biggest pet peeve about restaurant breakfasts is that they never butter my toast. :snooty: I know some people would prefer to butter it themselves but not me! By the time the toast gets to me and I open those frozen little packs of butter or margarine, my toast is stone cold and trying to spread anything on there is rather near impossible! Toast is meant to be buttered as soon as it comes out of the toaster or oven, so that the butter melts over it.

The only time I can remember a restaurant buttering my toast was at the Rainforest Café at Animal Kingdom in 2005. The toast was still warm, and covered with a perfect amount of butter. It just melted in my mouth. That’s the way it should be! :cloud9: That was probably the best breakfast I have ever had, followed closely by the Breakfast with Pooh and Friends at the Wilderness Lodge, which, sadly, is not longer offered. :guilty:

So, even though I nearly scraped the roof of my mouth with my toast, my eggs just about made up for it. They were firm but moist, just the way I like my scrambled eggs. I only eat scrambled eggs when I am on vacation. When I am at home, I like them over-easy. I try to scramble them, I just suck at it though. So when someone else is cooking my eggs, I like to have them scrambled. My hashbrowns were drowning in grease and my ham was a tad bit charred.

IMG_2466.jpg

Rob enjoyed his French toast but complained that it was very sweet. It’s something you will hear Rob say a lot. Rob is hypoglycaemic and can only handle so much sugar before he gets a buzz and goes all whacky. And yet, he almost always orders one of the sweetest things available on the menu. I just laugh when he tells me how sweet his meal was. :rotfl2:

No way! Really? The waffle with berry compote, brown sugar and whipped cream was sweet???

Get out!!!

:rotfl:

After shelling out $40 + tip for breakfast, we decided to go shopping so that I can get the few things I had planned on getting before we ran out of money. :rolleyes2

Continued in the next post....

My main objective for this trip was to find me some Uggs. I have wanted my boots for a few years now but I’m a thrifty kind of girl and couldn’t fathom spending over $200 for a pair of boots. :scared1: Rob tried getting them for me last Christmas but they were all sold out. There’s only a few stores here in Calgary that actually sell them so they aren’t easy to find. So after wanting them for so long, I decided to save up for them and get them in Vegas. I figured they might be a little cheaper there and easier to find.

My other objective was to buy a bottle of my perfume, which has been discontinued. It’s no longer available here in Canada but still easy to find in the States. It’s called Still by Jennifer Lopez. I love this stuff. I am very allergic to anything with a scent so it’s hard for me to find a perfume that I can actually wear without tearing up and having to blow my nose every few seconds. This one is perfect for me and I love it because it is so unique. I can’t tell you how many women have stopped me on the street to ask me what perfume I was wearing. Of course I lie and tell them Chanel. :rolleyes1

Just kidding.

Maybe.

So I had printed out a coupon for Perfumania at the Premium Outlet Mall and was on a mission to find boots and perfume!

I also wanted to peek in the Crocs store there! A whole store of Crocs, yay! :cool1:

It was about a 30 minute drive and there was a ton of construction, especially right around the mall area but we made it for opening time. Rob had a conference call scheduled for 10 AM so while he tended to his clients, I ducked into the Crocs store.

I have to admit that I was rather disappointed in the store. I was hoping to find some different styles of Crocs that aren’t available in Calgary but mostly it was the same old stuff and for the same price! They had a few more colours to choose from but nothing spectacular. I had been to their website right before we left and had found a few different styles that I had hoped to try on but they weren’t at the store.

Leaving the store empty-handed, I found Rob looking rather glum. He had just received some REALLY bad news work-wise.

I tried to cheer him up by taking him to the Disney Store outlet.

IMG_2471.jpg

Heck, it cheered me up just walking in the door :woohoo: LOL!

Well, it did make us feel a lot better. We found tons of clothes for Kira for cheap, cheap, cheap!

We probably spent about an hour in that store!

The funny thing is, we didn’t buy a single thing for ourselves and we were happy about it! :cloud9:

Ooodles and ooodles of fun beyond these doors!
IMG_2468.jpg

Next on the agenda was Perfumania. There it was, on the shelf with hundreds of other bottles of the now discontinued Still. I was hoping to win a jackpot and go back and buy up their entire inventory.

Unfortunately, I only bought one bottle but I got 15% off.

I can smell all purty now!
IMG_2470.jpg

While Rob searched for some new Reeboks, I checked out all the stores that had Uggs in their window. Finally I found the colour and size that I wanted and they were only $129!!!!! Wooo hoooo she shoots, she scores!!!! :thumbsup2

I love me some Uggs!
IMG_2495-copy.jpg

In case you are wondering what the heck an Ugg is...

uggs.jpg

I got me the black ones, just like the lower black one in that pic. :thumbsup2

We decided that this would be our shopping day. So we went to The Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace, hoping to find one of Rob’s favourites, the Warner Brother’s Store. He bought a lot of stuff at that store the last time we were in Vegas. Unfortunately it was no longer there.

We explored the mall a little.

May the FAO Schwartz be with you!:darth:
IMG_2477.jpg

It had been a whole 2 hours since we ate last, so Rob was wasting away of course. Man, that boy can EAT! Or is it Boy, that man can EAT!! Either way…he’s always hungry!

He stopped for a coffee and some cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory. I had a bite but it was way too creamy for my liking. I like a firm cheesecake and not so creamy.

$7 cheesecake
IMG_2479.jpg

Next, we went in search of some escalators. Not any old escalators, mind you. These puppies were rounded escalators. I believe there’s only a few in the world that do that and they were here in the Forum Shops!

It’s the simple things in life that make me happy.

So of course we had to ride on these modern marvels! I have to admit, it was kinda cool to be going ‘round the corners woo hooo!

IMG_2490.jpg

Ok, is it just me or is this just all wrong??? LOL!

IMG_2491.jpg

Time to hop on over to Planet Hollywood for the Miracle Mile Shops.

I don’t know why we went to all these malls and stores. They are full of high-priced designer stores which we totally could not afford. Heck, I couldn’t even afford to just walk in one of those stores LOL!

I had to laugh though because you could tell the really pricey ones. They had like 12 items for sale, that’s it LOL!

After walking the Miracle Mile shops, I figured out how they came up with that name…it’s a miracle if you can walk that many miles in a row!! The place was huge!! Eventually I got dizzy and had to find refuge in the casino. I already knew I liked this casino because you get to see it in the movie 21. Which was awesome by the way!!!

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!!

Speaking of blackjack…

I had seen $5 blackjack tables everywhere we went so far, EXCEPT the Luxor, which really ticked me off because my plan was to be playing blackjack while Rob was in the room working. The Luxor only had $10 (and up) tables and they were always crowded. Since I had never played before, I did not want to be playing at anything more than a $5 table.

So, there we were, roaming the casino at Planet Hollywood and I passed 2 $5 BJ tables in a row, both with seats open. I mentioned something to Rob about it and he encouraged me to go play. I was hesitant (read chicken!) but eventually I decided to give it a go.

I was so nervous, my palms were all sweaty, my face was all flush and my heart was just thumping. I got $60 worth of chips, took a deep breath and went for it.

I was nervous about making a mistake. I had tried to learn basic strategy before we left but there are a lot of different possible hands and you have to play based on what the dealer has too, not just what you have. I had read and heard stories about people getting upset if you make the wrong move because then it impacts what the other players get. I had about 95% of basic strategy down but I always got nervous when it came to aces. I could never remember when I should double down.

My brother told me to just take my time and not to worry about the other people at the table.

As I began playing, I noticed that most people playing didn’t know basic strategy or if they did, they sure weren’t following it. Half the time people were making stupid mistakes and losing because of it. Like hitting on a 12 when the dealer had a 4.

Ok, I didn’t feel too bad after I saw that!

There were a few hands where I really had to think about it for a second but the dealer would help you out. They went so fast though, it was hard to keep up sometimes. I was not prepared for that!

But I was happy and shocked just how much the dealer tried to help you out. I say “tried” because some people were so dumb that even when the dealer told them what to do, they still made bad decisions! :sad2:

One middle-aged guy had a 6 and a 4 and he motioned to the dealer to hit him and the dealer said “You sure you don’t want to double down?” and the guy said no!

Zzzzzzztttt

During this time, Rob was wandering aimlessly around the casino. He’s not a gambler so after putting $5 and losing said $5 in a slot machine, he came to watch me play. Just as he approached me, I got my first blackjack. A winning BJ pays 3 to 2, so on my $5 bet, I got back a $5 chip, 2- $1 chips and a fifty cent piece. I kept the fifty cent piece as a souvenir of course LOL!

Rob kept asking me all these questions and I was still a little nervous and the pace was really quick and it was getting hard to keep up so I politely sent him on his way LOL!

I felt bad that he was just sitting there doing nothing so I upped my bets a little and ended up losing it all. I was ok with that though because it took me about an hour to lose that $60 and it was fun!! I lost that much on slots the night before in 10 minutes and didn’t have any fun at all!

Continued in the next post...

So, our plan was to have some lunch at Earl of Sandwich, which was right at the entrance to the Miracle Mile shops. Rob spotted a Hawaiian sandwich and decided to order that and I tried the Ham & Swiss.

No hot roast beef smoothies here
IMG_2494.jpg

IMG_2495.jpg

Rob really enjoyed his choice, he loved the bread. I enjoyed mine too, it wasn't fabulous but it was decent. And our bill was only $16 with the two sandwiches and a bottle of water. Cheapest meal of the whole trip!

Back to the hotel to veg out for a little bit and to see our girl on the webcam then we got all cleaned up for our first Cirque Du Soleil show, Ka.

Waiting on the princess :goodvibes
IMG_2499.jpg

IMG_2501.jpg

We were both super excited about seeing this show. Rob and I are big Cirque fans. Rob, being a DJ, is really into the music. I enjoy some of the soundtracks, but not all of them.

My favourite is Alegria. It was also my first (and still favourite) Cirque show. But Ka, is my second favourite soundtrack. Rob had bought the album last year and I listened to it a lot on the computer.

So, already knowing the music, and already loving the music and having watched an episode of CSI that featured the show, had really whet our appetite and we were very pumped about seeing it.

We valeted ( is that even a word? ) the car at MGM because I was in those nasty heels again.

MGM, by the way, gets high marks for their valet system. Not only is everything marked and easy to find, it was the only place where they rushed around to open my door first, both dropping off and picking up, completely ignoring Rob until I was safely in or out of the vehicle.

Classy.

We found our way to the Ka theatre and proceeded into the store as per usual. Rob found all the soundtracks from all the Vegas Cirque shows right there as well as a nice t-shirt. He asked me if I had wanted anything and normally I say no. But I remembered how much I loved the music and how cool this show looked from the few clips and videos I had seen of it so I opted for a nice little red t-shirt for $30.

All the doormen were dressed up (kind of like savages with warrior paint etc.) and were in character. Another awesome hint how good this show is going to be! The guy who took my ticket said "Ooooooh, you're so SHINY!!!" :lmao:

They were taking pictures to sell to you later for $20 (no thanks!) so we asked a fine young English couple to take our picture for us (free!) and then chatted with them about Criss Angel’s new show at the Luxor, which from what I’ve read is horrendous.

Ok, so not the best picture...but it was free!
IMG_2503.jpg

Then we entered the theatre.

Wow.

Wow, wow!

:worship:

Ok, how cool was this theatre!!!! It was huge, and to the sides were these set pieces that were reminiscent of Mad Max combined with The Matrix . They were like rafters in a gigantic factory of some kind. And then the stage…wow!! Instead of the stage being there, it was a huge open dungenous (ok, so I made that word up!) pit filled with smoke/fog and every 30 seconds or so, a huge flame burst out from beneath.

Ok, this is going to be AWESOME!!!!!!!! :woohoo:

Rob and I were like two little kids vibrating excitedly in our seats. We couldn’t wait for it to start! There were a few guys walking around (in character) mingling with the audience. We were told that we couldn’t take pictures of the theatre, which I thought was ******** because you can take pictures at every show BEFORE the show, just not during the show.

So we were good little audience members.

For awhile.

:rolleyes1

After about 20 minutes and hundreds of flash pictures later, I whipped out the camera and snuck a few photos. Ok, I wasn’t really bad, I didn’t use a flash but I did snap a couple of pics. They didn’t turn out that well, but they are clear enough (after some photoshopping) to give you an idea of how cool this theatre was.

IMG_2507copy.jpg

Great balls of fire!

IMG_2508.jpg

Finally, the show began. popcorn::

The stage (s) was soooo cool! I don’t want to give too much away but they were no ordinary stages!

So, it began…they actually TELL you what the story is about.

Weird.

All the Cirque shows we’ve seen give you an idea of the story but leave it open for you to interpret yourself, which I think is awesome because everyone takes away something different from it.

Ok.

More story….

And more story.

The amazing acrobatics and feats of skill are going to start any minute now…

any minute …now.

Yup.

Waiting.

Patiently waiting.

Hmmm.

This is not looking good.

But it’s gonna get REALLY good soon, I can just feel it.

Oh, wait…here comes something cool!!

Yeah, that was cool!

Cool sequence over.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

{drool}

Sorry, that was just me taking a quick nap.

Ok, it’s over an hour into the show now. It’s not looking too good.

Here come these huge cool poles…and some… big fat….. giant fake …..snakes…ehrm.

What???????

Excuse me?

Did we enter the right theatre??? Maybe we took a left when we should have gone right.

Ok, the last 10 minutes was pretty darn cool.

And then it was over.

:crazy2:

Really?

That was Ka?

Ok, where’s the cameras???

We’ve been punked, right? Oh please tell me Ashton Kutcher is somewhere around here laughing his butt off.

Hmm. No Ashton? :rolleyes2

Oooooook.

That’s not what I was expecting.

If I was going to see a play….alright. But this is Cirque Du Soleil people!!!

Well Rob enjoyed it a little more than I did. Even though he was giving me that “look” for the first hour (the “what-the-heck-is-this-crap” look) he did really enjoy the ending so I guess that helped.

Me? Not so much.

Not at all, actually.

Not my cup of tea.

I’m pretty sure that a lot of people felt that way because while the applause at the end was present, it was rather lacklustre.

The other shows all got standing ovations by the entire theatre but I don’t think anyone was standing at the end of Ka.

Oh well, at least we got to see it. I was grateful for that. And Rob enjoyed the end, so not all was lost.

I just wanted to get back to the valet to see if they would open my door again LOL!

And they did.

Classy.

Ok, back into comfy clothes, we headed for the Burger Bar at Mandalay Place. I had been wanting to try the Kobe Beef burger ever since I read their menu online months ago.

This place was always packed! Didn’t matter what time of day it was, there was always a dozen or so people waiting for a table. I requested a booth, of course and we waited about 15 minutes to get one.

I liked these booths, they had really high backs for privacy and little tv’s in each one.

Rob was responding to some emails so I kept busy by watching an episode of Friends, the one where Chandler and Joey get the big screen TV and leather recliners LOL! I really miss that show!

We both decided to order the Kobe burgers and I got a side of fat fries while Rob chose the sweet potato fries.

Here’s another case of knowing that I am in the USA. When ordering a burger, they ask you how you would like it cooked.

I remember the first time I ordered a burger in a restaurant in the US. She asked me how I would like that….I replied “cooked!” LOL!

In Canada, you don’t get a choice. They cook it all the way through. Not charred but no pink in the middle. Undercooked meat is extremely dangerous. Ground meat in particular is a huge breeding ground for e-coli.

I really have to watch what I eat because I have Lupus. My immune system is not as strong as other people’s and so I am more vulnerable to viruses and bacteria.

So when she asked me how I wanted my burger cooked I requested that they cook it well done so that there’s no pink in the middle.

Unfortunately, it is a very dark restaurant and it was a lot pinker than I thought it was. Looking at the picture now, I totally should have sent it back but it really didn’t look that pink in the restaurant.:scared:

It was absolutely delicious!!!!!!!! It just melted in my mouth! It was the most tender meat I have ever tasted! And this was the American Kobe Beef, not as good as the Japanese Kobe beef so I can only imagine what that tastes like! Apparently, the cattle that produce the Japanese Kobe beef are fed sake and beer and are massaged daily!

:scratchin

Ahem, anyway…the burger was amazing and the fries were soooo good too! I washed it down with a couple of diet-pepsi’s and was completely satisfied!

The cheque was $51 plus tip but it was worth every penny!

Just before our burgers came, Rob ran next door to the Chocolate Swan and picked us up dessert! He got us a piece of Peanut Butter cheesecake and a few chocolates for himself.

After dinner we went back to the room and had some dessert in bed. I wasn’t really impressed with the cheesecake, again. It was way too soft and creamy.

But I was still on a food high from my burger!

Unfortunately, that high didn’t last too long and I went from a high high to a very low low, real fast fast. :(

IMG_2519.jpg

See all that pink???

omg, I found a Cass and Rob report, with chocolate croissants to boot!! You just made my night, seriously. Cass, you are not going to believe this, but my husband was there on business last week, at the same time! His conference was at the MGM Grand, from the 12th to the 16th. He loved the hotel, but hated the casinos, it was too smoky smelling for him, not his cup of tea. He thought the hotels were very cool though. He was too beat to do anything at night, the conference took everything out of him. I hated him being gone! I'll die if I see him in any of your pictures! Oh I can't wait for more, please don't make us wait!

Hi Jillpie! Wow, your hubby was there too? What a coinky-dink ;) Yeah, most of the casinos were super smokey, way more than 10 years ago! We found MGM to be one of the good ones though. We spent quite a bit of time there and loved it!

Cass and Rob I have read all your trip reports and love them all. How have you been feeling? I know you were having some problems when you had Kira. How is old is she now? She is a doll baby. Can't wait to read more.

Thanks for asking :goodvibes Kira is 23 months today :woohoo: Can't believe we will be celebrating her second birthday next month already!

I am doing pretty good actually, haven't had to go back on meds since she was born so I am awfully lucky ::yes::

You should write a letter and let them know that thier mickey waffle maker is not working right

His last trip was mid-Sept.

Hey Jo! Wow, I would kill Rob if he told me that :lmao: What Happens in Vegas should be fully disclosed to wives when wives are not present :rotfl2: :rotfl:

Hope you enjoy the report :thumbsup2

Hi, I'm Cass and I'm a dork. ::yes::

It's not Disney but we always manage to have some Disney fun! Rob got to Vegas and was unpacking and he said "I think all I brought are Disney shirts"

I said "Soooo?"

Thanks!! Right back atcha!

ooh...cheesecake factory..my fav. This brought back so many good memories.:)

Did you like their cheesecake? It was good, just a little too creamy-soft for my liking.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy KA. Rick would agree with you...he fell asleep too, but I loved it.

I can see how someone would like it, especially if you like plays. I guess I am just not a play kind of girl. I need some action and death defying stunts thrown in there :rolleyes1 :rotfl2:

Actually, when we were leaving, I told Rob that I think our friend Dean would have LOVED Ka!

Sounds like a fun day...thanks for sharing! I have never seen a Cirque show. There was a travelling one in Hartford last spring and I looked into tickets but I couldn't swing it at the time.

SO far we have seen Alegria, Delerium, Quidam, La Nouba & Corteo plus 3 from Vegas. It's definitely something to see when you get a chance! ::yes::

Love the report.

Thanks Hedy:goodvibes

Thanks :goodvibes And happy 42 to you guys!! Wow, 42 years, that sure is something to celebrate!!! party:

I don't think I would have made it through the week without seeing her on the webcame. :sad2: It really helped us get through the week without her. Plus she was having so much fun with her aunt, uncle and 3 cousins :upsidedow

So sorry Cass. MG was looking for updates in all the wrong places. :surfweb: I got through day 1 and will be reading day 2 tomorrow.

Too bad most of your food didn't taste the best. At least it pictured well.
And I'm a smell girl too. No...not smelly girl, just a smell girl. I smell everything! If I detect a scent on a gift I'm receiving, I'll try to guess what it is by smelling it first.

Loving your TR and thanks for giggles kiddo.

BTW....you look Mahhhhhhvelous!!

Going through my pics and it looks like I left a few little things out that I had wanted to include....

I forgot to mention that when we were at Caesar's Palace, after all that walking around, Rob was hungry (what a shocker eh? ;) ) and I was really thirsty so we stopped at their little food court area called Cypress Street Market. Rob got a fruit salad and a coffee and I think he said it was just under $12.

I walked around trying to find a price for a soda but there was nothing listed on the menus anywhere! I kept seeing the refilling stations for the soda but none of the places had drinks even listed on their menus! Finally I just walked up to one of the places and asked for a soda. They gave me a cup and charged me $3.77!!! :scared1: Holy crap, almost 4 bucks just to quench my thirst!!! :headache: That's more expensive than Disney!!!!!!

My first thought was..I won't be complaining next year at Disney World when I get a $2.50 soda! ::yes:: :rolleyes1 :lmao:

Would you believe that cost $15!
IMG_2493.jpg

Another thing I wanted to mention was all the idiot drivers! It didn't help that there was construction everywhere and lanes were closed without any warning but still, I couldn't believe how some of them were driving!

Zzzzzzzzzztttttttttt

One guy in particular comes to mind...

We were going back to the Luxor from MGM after Ka and there was a guy who was driving a convertible and taking pictures at the same time! Even though this guy had passengers that could have done the job for him, he just kept snapping away!

Zzzzzzzzzzzztttttttt

We followed him around the corner onto the Strip and then he started filming everything with his camera....yup, he was still driving!

I tried to take a picture of the fool but it didn't come out well.

You can kind of see him in this pic, I have circled in red the camera that he was holding up!

Speaking of cars, Vegas is definitely the place to see some cool cars! At the Luxor North valet, there was always 3 cars there covered up. You could tell that one of them was a Bentley, one of them was a Lamborghini and I can't remember what the other one was. But there they sat, the whole week, in the valet all covered up! One night as we were picking up our car, the Lamburghini was not covered up, Rob got all excited and took a pic of it :lmao:

This is what they normally looked like...

And then the naked Lam ;)

I just love going to Vegas. We stayed a couple of nights at the Wynn and then at Harrah's 10/8 to 10/12. All were comp'd if you can believe that - and no we are not big gamblers.

Love your trip report and agree that the food at the Wynn was not that great. We ordered the nachos and a piece of cheese cake at the Wynn deli one night and it was $27 - with no drinks:scared1:

We learned a couple of things to do - eat at Burger King or a chain type restaurant when we can and never drive down the strip if we can help it. There are a couple of good roads behind MGM that give you direct access to the parking at the different casinos so you can avoid the crazy traffic on the strip. Oh and we always use the valet parking. I usually tip $2 to $3 when I pick up the car.
