Carpet to tile

has any one done it if so what was it like

Finding a place for furniture

And well my house feel less homey

I recently went from a home with all carpet (except kitchen) to a home where only the bedrooms were carpeted.

I agree, it seemed less homey, and very echo-ey, like I was in a cavern! Like in the movies where they yell "Hello!" and it comes back "Hello, hello, hello!" lol!

It helped some to put down a few area rugs. You can find some inexpensive at Walmart or Big Lots.

Then you can use the area rugs as an "anchor" for the furniture, if that makes sense.... something to place your furniture around.

I find myself cleaning the floor more often too, but my floor shows footprints easily, if you have a textured tile that might not be an issue.

Good luck! :flower:

I like the idea of texter tile

We had some tile in our home when I was a kid growing up. To be honest, I never liked it! I found it cold on the feet and like you said, not very homey. If you want something other than carpet, how about laminate or even vinyl? We have vinyl throughout our home and it looks just like hardwood!

I don't care for tile. We currently have it in the bathrooms, but no way would I want it throughout the house. A couple of years ago we pulled up old carpeting and have hardwood floors with area rugs. I'll admit on these cold winter nights can feel cooler than the carpeting did, though we were able to insulate under the floor boards (basement ceiling) so that helps a lot. I prefer the look of hardwood -- good laminate or vinyl can look as nice too.

Love tile in our bathrooms, kitchen - somewhat, anywhere else - no!
Love our carpets - no pets.

I did not put in my first post but even after cleaning the carpets the house smells it's is becuse cat urine got to the patting and the only way to get rid of the smell is getting rid of the carpet

Dh and I can't smell it but others can

Have you had them professionally cleaned? If so and you can still smell it, then yes, I would probably rip them out too and lay something down that's a lot easier to clean.

Yes it was professionally done So tile it is

If wood gets wet it ruins it so I need the most durable option for lack of better word

There's another thread about flooring and someone mentioned a product that looks like wood but is fine with liquid. I can't remember what it was called, though.

We have wood look tile throughout. We have an area rug in the living room and in the bathrooms but that's it. We live in a warmer climate so I don't mind the floor being cool. I notice all kinds of dust and debris on the floor so there's more vacuuming (roomba is awesome) and sweeping. But I figure all that gunk was there when we had carpet, we just didn't see it.

I love our floor. With kids and pets it's easy to clean. There's no forgiveness if you drop something breakable, though. I've lost a few dishes and knick knacks.

All tile n not a stitch of carpet( well welcome mats n one by my sink). .. and I love the ease of cleaning, the cleanliness of being germ free (steaming) and the allergy free bonus!
Originally got rid of all carpet due to a dog ( not urine but rather odor/germs)
And when I re-bought new ..all tile and
Love it!

I have all tile and love it! Like the PP said it's much easier to clean and because of my allergies I breathe a lot easier.

We went from carpet to hardwood in our old house and I loved it. In our current house we have hardwood downstairs and carpet upstairs. There is a notable difference in the amount of dust downstairs vs upstairs. I don't like carpeting. In a dust and dirt magnet. Even with not wearing shoes inside and very frequent vacuuming the dirt that comes up when I shampoo the carpeting is disgusting.

I don't know how I'd feel about tile though. Maybe wood looking tile but I don't think I'd like traditional kitchen/bathroom tile throughout the house. It just isn't something I've seen much of here in the northeast.

As far as wood getting ruined if wet, that's true if liquid sits on it for a good amount of time but isn't true for a spill that gets cleaned up. I potty trained a child and dog with hardwood with no ill affects. Also, woods range in durability. Oak is one of the hardest and most durable. We have maple currently and it's a little less durable but still fine.

I would definitely replace the carpets with a hard surface floor, especially if you have cats that continue to urinate outside their litterbox.
I personally would not do tile in my home anywhere but bathrooms and kitchen. I would do hardwood, or even a laminate. A floor that is sealed properly should be ok when liquids are spilled as long as puddles aren't sitting there all day.
Regardless of what you decide to put down, you can use area rugs and even throw pillows and blankets on your upholstered furniture to make it feel more warm and help with the echoing cavernous sound.

We went from carpet to laminate. The absolutely most shocking difference is, you find out how much dirt and hair and dust balls your carpet was hiding when you switch to a solid surface floor.

We have tile planks that look like wood throughout the downstairs. It's porcelain tile, not ceramic tile so it's not as cold. We love it so much better than carpet! It's durable, it can get wet without concern, if one of the dogs barfs on it or has an accident it's easy to clean, and it looks amazing!
