CAD $$

If I have a US$ Disney GC can I load a Cdn $ gift card onto it (the US $ card) on the gift card site or no?

I have an issue with the CAD Disney Gift Card. I tried to use it to pay some of the balance of my cruise with my travel agent, and they said they couldn't use it unless I knew EXACTLY how many USD I would get for the $1000 CAD balance on the card. I was told to call the gift card, which I did. They were unable to tell me my USD balance and I had to email guest services at disney gift card to convert the card and get the balance.

This seems super weird....I've never had to do this, and I have a mitt full of cards and I really don't feel this is right. Anyone have any tips?

@Sunday Do you have the gift card loaded to the gift card website? It should tell you how much it is in US dollars I believe. Or just go to xe.com currency converter and put the amount in there. It will be the same.

They need to put a payment in $us. I usually estimate how much $us it will be and then round down a bit. So say for example I estimate my cards are worth $550 US, I would make a payment for $500

When I pay for my DVC dues with a GC, I have to enter in how much I want to pay using the GC. So what I do is go on the gift card website, load my card, and it tells me the balance in US$. I then enter that value in. If you have multiple cards, I believe you can enter them all into the website and combine them, so then you can do only one payment instead of multiple ones.

Thanks for the tips. The website USED TO show my balance in USD but no longer. Only CAD.
I always found that it would show CAD until I added anther card...then it would show USD. That said I haven't used the site since the changes took place....it think that was January.

Just thought I would mention something I was doing in case it helped someone else. I buy our Disney Gift Cards from Shop Disney now . and choose email delivery . With Shop Disney the cards are in USD. I just add the gift card code on the Disney gift card site to a card I already have on file.

My thinking on this one is that I lock in the USD rate from the day I purchase.l ( instead of being at the mercy of whatever the exchange rate is when I eventually use the card ). Yes, I get charged the Forex on my card but I have the Amazon MC that gives me the forex back in Amazon credit. This method would also work if buying with a USD credit card or a card that doesn’t charge forex.

One point to note is that the e-gift card is not automatic delivery. I see the charge pending and get a confirmation email immediately but it can take up to two days to deliver the card to my email .

Let me know how it works out and when you finally get the GC. I tried this once and I had to jump hoops. They put the charge through as pending, sent the confirmation email but nothing after that. When I contacted them they told me I had to get some sort of code from my CC company. I had to call MC and them call back about the GC. It was a long time getting that and I swore I would never do it again.
I'm hoping that things have changed and it's not that difficult anymore. If it has in fact changed and yours goes through with no issues I will use this method again. You are so right, it's an awesome way to do it.
ETA to add a thank you!

Interestingly I’m sitting and waiting for a card right now that I ordered with my MasterCard on Thursday . I just contacted support to see what the hold up is . But I’ve done it no problem twice before, so it might be this card . I’m not the primary card holder , my husband is , and now that you’ve mentioned it , I had the same issue with Etsy when I tried to order a gift card for my daughter! I was able to fix that by using my husbands card on the same account and it went through . Any chance you’re the secondary user on the card you tried ?

While not exchange-rate related, did you know the new Aeroplan program allows for family sharing of miles now? That could mean a free flight in some instances to cut down costs as well.

Yeah that is such a nice benefit of the new program. We created Aeroplan accounts for our kids when they were babies, since we do travel quite a bit with Air Canada. Figured they could use the miles when they turned 18.
Well, with family sharing introduced, we used our kids' AP miles to book our March 2022 flights. We paid for their initial flights anyway  I don't think they'll complain since it's for a WDW trip :D

Another update , it appears my card was fine but there was a typo in my email address so they are resending it .

No, I'm primary. It was a while ago that I tried this though so maybe they have fixed the glitch. I'll give it a try next week and see what happens. I have a ton of used US DGC's and it would be good if I could load each one with a bit of funds to give my group for Christmas as our sailing is next March.
Thanks for the update, I really appreciate it.

I’m wondering if anyone has a Scotia US savings account. i opened one today but wondering if you get a debit card or anything with it, I’m not able to find info on it. If not would I have to go to the bank to withdraw the money?

See page 30 here: https://www.scotiabank.com/content/...ings/day-to-day_banking_companion_booklet.pdf it looks like you can only use a Scotia ATM to check your account balance. I suggest confirming what you can/cannot do with your branch.

I can’t speak to that specific account but in general when you use a Canadian debit card in the US the system recognizes the card as CAD and converts it to USD. If that's what you are asking.
