Buying an IPhone 3G vs 4G

The Iphone 5 is supposed to be on the market this September or October. If that does happen, the iphone 4 will drop dramatically in price. You may want to wait a few months and see.

not true...I have the 3gs and take videos of my kids almost daily.

Little bit of confusion here, I have the 3G which has NO video capability nor will it have the ability to upgrade to OS 5 HOWEVER the 3G"S" does have video capability and will have the ability to upgrade to the OS 5. (so there's a significant difference between the IPhone 3G and the IPhone 3GS) I bought my 3G just before the 3GS came out which I was not aware it was coming out. Wish I would have waited for the 3GS. But, the AT&T and Apple guys used to have "no idea" when the new versions were going to be released, so they said...

If you go to macrumors.com they have a buyers guide. Big red flag on buying the iphones right now. They expect the new phone to be out in less then a month.

If you are thinking of going with older technology you are going to get about 1-2 years less life out of your phone. Put it in prospective. If you go with the 3gs you are going to have less options and a slower os experience. You save about $6 a month going with the 3gs. My wife "doesn't care" so she get the old phone I take the new one. All I have herd from her is "when is the 5 coming out so I can have a better phone" She hates the 3gs knowing that the 4 is so much better.

Go with the 5 in a month. 2 years from now you are not going to be regretting that you spent the extra money. You are going to be happy that you will not need another phone already.

I got two 3gs phones several months after the 4 arrived. My DD and I both love the phone. But we got them for $49. and the 4 was $549. It was a no brainer due to the cost. We could upgrade later this year but since they work perfectly for our needs I will keep them until they die.

For me it came down to cost. I just recently became a SAHM and we moved to Germany. I got my iphone 3G for 1 euro which is about $2. I am so happy with it. If I am not mistaken a 4G has a flash on the camera. I try to download apps and it states I do not have flash or led lights. I honestly could care less. I can take pics, videos, listen to my music and podcasts and have a ton of apps. I am very happy with it.

Some apps are not going to work on a 3rd generation iPhone because it doesn't run on the same operating system as a 4th generation one, as far as I know. Depending on what apps you want to use, that could become a real issue (and I suspect that over your two year contract period it will become a bigger issue as newer apps won't be backwards compatiable).

I have a 3GS and DH has a 4. I would go with the 4. If you can wait a month or so, to see if the 5 comes out and the price drops, I would do so. The reason I would pick the 4, is that since the 4 has come out, there are less and less free apps that seem to be compatible with my 3GS. Seems like every time I want a free app, I find out that it is free for the 4, but not compatible with the 3, and that if I want it, I have to get the paid version. I'm guessing this is going to happen more and more for my phone when the 5 comes out.
