Brawl at Test Track-Epcot

So, it was posted a few pages back that the lady carrying the weapon... Umbrella.... Was going to be on the 5 o'clock news ... Any locals want to give an update if they see it?? I know it's not funny, as ppl could've been seriously hurt, but I can't help it... I find this whole thing amusing and would love to hear her response for defending her crazy actions ...

As I said before, one strike and your out is stupid if there is no ability to examining each incident separately. There are some legitimate reasons (theft, threats or assault for example) for immediate dismissal but not every reason should (trying to stop a fight so the combatants and possibly other guests) lead to a dismissal. There have been examples of employers telling employees to not administer and Epi pen, if an employee violated that rule to save a life they certainly shouldn't be fired.

One of the first question a business is asked in lawsuits is "has this ever happened before and how was it handled?" It is a lot tougher to defend the company's actions when each situation had a different response. That leads to charges of discrimination. If this CM put his hands on a legal child (no matter her behavior) then that action puts Disney at risk.

I am not sure how this one CM though he would be able to have any effect on the fight. If he thought there was going to be injuries, then he should have moved the other guests back away from those involved in the fight. That may be allowed by Disney.

Agreed! For some reason I had visions of the 'Hide your wife, Hide your kids' remix flash through my mind.

I witnessed two men fighting at the bottom of the escalator to TTA many years ago. Two stupid dads who embarrassed their teenage kids and probably wrecked the vacation. Reason for the fight--da da da da dum--Line cutting!

At PeopleMover? I know the rampalator is exciting but not that exciting. I'd hate to see how they reacted to The Treehouse.

As a former teacher, I knew the CM was going to have some trouble with Disney as soon as he restrained Goofy. He made the right call, but sadly his job is now in jeopardy because of it. I'm pretty sure this wasn't the first brawl for Poppins & Goofy.
The way the woman headed back toward the mother and teen, I'm sure it wasn't the first brawl for her either.

The same rule is in place in some school systems. Teachers can not physically break up a fight. They can TELL the kids to stop fighting, clear the area and call security. Touching the kids can result on you being fired and/or sued by crazy parents.
Just curious...may a teacher defend him/herself if he/ she is being assaulted by a student or must he/ she wait for security and/ or the police?

We are not supposed to touch students.

However, I have never heard of a teacher being fired for defending him/herself when attacked by a student and/or parents . In my experience, they end up in the rubber room for a bit. As long as teacher didn't provoke or start the fight, they will end up in another school.

@asta , I agree with you about the guy in the in the shirt who stays there. I think that he is either security or possibly a CM who is not on shift. Listening to the video, I'm pretty sure he says "Back off" (or maybe back up) several times and then it sounds like he says "I work here" and then continues to command her to back off.

A few times that's been the case for us, but for the most part it's a free for all. Even if we do go to an assigned number, there has always been space for the two of us to duck to the side and let everyone else past. Beats getting smacked with an umbrella. LOL

I don't know how Test Track queue works, since the last time I was there it was the "old" Test Track. But many times on other attractions I've noticed people ignore their assigned spaces and go wherever they want. Several times on Soarin' people assigned to the back rows rushed to the front when the doors opened and tried to claim seats there. We had to get a CM to kick some group out of our front row seats. They pretended not to understand but I could tell they damn well knew what they were doing; that they've successfully used this trick before and gotten away with it.

In my opinion the plain clothed security is not as large in quantity or as effective as everyone wishes they were. The area is just too large for someone to be able to respond to any situation at any time within seconds, or even minutes. I'm sure there are areas where a response time would be minimal. I doubt they plan for a heavy security presence in ride lines. It just wouldn't be a cost effective way to budget for such rare incidents.

No, it wouldn't be cost effective. And we all know that's what matters most to Disney.

I've always heard there were plenty of plain-clothed security around, but maybe most of them were let go as a cost cutting measure. Just like all the bathroom attendants were fired. ;)

It certainly wouldn't surprise me in the least. :)

Funny that you mentioned this. A family tried this on Soarin' last week. The people in first were waiting when we got there, I assume for front row. They went in and grabbed the center seats instead of going to the end. We did not want to split our family up so we told them they needed to move. Same bit of we don't understand but they finally moved on down with a few angry glances our way.

A properly constructed policy would not lead to charges of discrimination.

No, I don't agree that he would have been fired for following company policy. If there is such a policy that is.
Having worked in an environment with a lot of violence and a lot of policies about how employees should handle customer aggression, I don't think he would be fired for adhering to the policy either. I think the company attorneys would present all the reasons why he did not involve himself. This isn't a judgment. It's just an observation of how companies handle these things.

It can be helpful to know a few words in several languages. ;).
