My In-Laws have DVC and they love it. The only thing they said is they had a very hard time booking other places other than Disney. Has anyone experienced this?

Just wondering since I think we will be using our points from time to time to book some places in the World Passport Collection

Yes and no. Certainly top options during peak times are difficult but I think most DVC members create a lot of their own difficulty by not understanding how the request system works with II, by planning too late (anything less than 1 year is late), by being unrealistic, by not placing on ongoing request and by not waiting it out until at least a few months prior to the dates requested. If you'll post specifically what you or they want to do including the area, unit size, resorts desired and flexibility, we can likely suggest the best chance of success. It's not usually the best value but at least you'll then have information.

Thank you very much. We are looking in 2010 so around this time next year we will most likely start booking

What is the maximum time you can book a world passport vacation ahead of time. Do you have a full year?

You can request a full 2 years out. You want to be looking when units can be deposited and preferably before most anyone else. While date of request is only a tiebreaker, that can be the difference between success and failure. Some resorts are deposited 18-24 months out, most of the rest are eligible by 12 months. Marriott's tend to be 12-14 months in many cases. Once a given resort is eligible to deposit, the actual units can get to II at any time.

What unit size, area and time of year are you looking for? For example, you'd want to be finalizing your plans now for high demand areas like HI for early 2010. Areas with mostly smaller units and lockoff's (HI, Caribbean) would mean that requiring a 2 BR would dramatically reduce your chances.

Thank you so much for your help. Forgive me for being new but I have no idea what you just said :). Are you saying that if we are interested in hawaii or the caribbean we should be calling II now to book for summer of 2010?

You can request now for summer 2010 and (IMO) you should have your request in non later than 12-13 months prior to the first dates of potential travel. You should investigate the resorts that interest you and this alone can take a few weeks to months in some cases.

Sorry to be a pest I just have 1 more question.

If we booked now for a 2010 vacation would we be using our point from our 2010 use year? We would still have our points for 2009 which we could use to book disney for 2009 correct?

The points for a given exchange are supposed to come from the UY of the exchange. So for summer 2010, it would depend on your UY. For Feb through ?August UY, it would be the 2010 UY points as I understand the rules. You could also borrow the following UY. If you match 2 Use Years ahead you have the choice of the current UY or the following UY and this could come into play if you searched for resorts that deposit 18-24 months ahead but likely not for anything else.
