I personally don't see the big deal. Did he just have a few drinks or was he falling down drunk and singing in the streets? It must be really fun to be in a place like Torino and I certainly can't blame him for going out. I don't see that he's setting a poor example for anyone.

I don't see that it is the job of an athlete to live up to being a hero. This is just some dumb kid that loves skiing and competition. And is darn good at it! I think it is amazing that people believe that anyone with notable talents is automatically required to live a particular lifestyle.

Parents need to teach their children values, and not assume some "star" is going to.

You only know about the night before because some reporter ratted him out or he decided to tell you. Given that, the argument rings hollow unless you are going to questin each American athlete does doesn't palce first and hold them accountable for what you think is the right way to act.

I’m not sure I understand your point. I was clear in my post that I don’t think an athlete needs to place first in order to be a good representative of our country. You are correct that I know about the night before from the news. I’m not sure what that has to do with it. I would feel similarly about his actions the night before the event even if he had won first place. That being said, I do not think that being an Olympian automatically makes one a role model.

Now to really ruffle some feathers.....and not just to do with Bode, but people keep saying "fifth place is great, he was only off by seconds, nothing to be ashamed of" well, okay, sure it's better than I can do, but let's not sugarcoat it. In the Olympics you want 1, 2, or 3! Anything is else is losing!

I mean, the Bears almost made it past the first round of play-offs, but they didn't. Did they go far? Sure, but they still lost!

If you want to get technical, sure medals are awared for first, second and third, but really only the first one is the winner, so anything less than first is losing.

I see a lot of hollow arguments about role models and representing the country. Many of the people taking home medals also went out and partied the night before.

People at home will be able to live with that either because they don't know about it, or they like that athlete so it doesn't matter. What they don't know can't hurt them.

Because many people don't listen or in this case read. I've been wondering if he had a few beers to unwind or if he was falling down drunk. I can't find an answer to that either.
