Big Thunder Railroad question....

It is pretty jerky, but if you stick to the front of the train it seems to be a little bit smoother.

I agree, you most certainly get the 'wilder' ride towards the back of the carriage!

It's the bumps in the track that make it 'jerky', other than that, I find the track to be extremely smooth!!

I find Space Mountain to be jerkier, if that gives you any point of reference.

Its jerky..but not nearly as bad as Space Mtn!! It may be an illusion..but it seems faster and jerkier after dark than it does during the day:confused3 :confused3
even my DDs thought so...so maybe I'm not completely nutz!!

its a common phenomanon that coasters seem to go faster and seem jerkier after dark. It is my favorite time of day to ride coasters at WDW and other parks I've been to.

On tour last night 2 years agowe rode the the Astro Orbiter in the dark and it was amazing, DW also rode Thunder Mountain in the dark and said it was wild in comparison to a daylight ride.

As for jerkiness I have had a different experience every time on the Thunder Mountain. Primeval Whirl is the jerkiest ride by far and that left me with a few bruises, still fun though and the kids are annoyed its closed when we are there this time.

Big Thunder Mountain in the dark is the greatest ride in the Magic Kingdom. :cheer2: I think I've ridden it 50 times and the absolute BEST were the times when MK was open til midnight and the Electrical Parade was twice a night. We'd ride BTMRR multiple times during the first parade at 9 and the fireworks at 10 then watch the 11:00 parade every night. Awesome!

Oh my!!! BTMRR is my absolute favorite ride in all of Disney!! And the best time to ride it is definitely at night. It is indeed rather jerky, so much so that my DM is not going to ride it until the last day because she doesn't want to accidently hurt her back (she has a very very sensitive back and a bony rear to boot). I personally think that it is more jerky at night because the stuff they put on the track hardens (as oppose to when it is the smoothest and faster in the afternoon because of it melting). Does anyone else think that this may be why?

The ride is not rough like a wooden roller coaster. It's just that some of the forces exerted on the rider are a little much, namely the turns into the tunnels; they're kind of tight, and you'll lean over due to inertia.

There are also some pops out of your seat. If you sit in the front in the middle of the day when the tracks are heated up, the only 'jerks' you feel will be about two or three turns you won't see coming. The track in the daylight is smoother and a little worn, and the front is pulling all of the trains behind it, so it goes pretty slow, but it's still fun.

Space Mountain is much jerkier because you have no idea which way you'll turn in the dark! On Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, at least you can see and prepare yourself for the turns coming up.
