Best "In-Character" Stories

I've had so many great character interactions over the years! Here's a few.

When me and my family did the MNSSHP last year, we met Frollo and the Queen of Hearts. I asked Frollo "why are you always so mean to the quasi?" He shooed me away and paid all his attention to my friend. When my dad went up to the Queen of hearts (he was dressed as Zorro), he kiss her hand. She just got all giggly and would not let my dad go! He tried to walk away but she kept pulling him back. Then after me and my friend took a pic with her, she brushed herself off like we were dirty!

A couple years ago, we were just standing around in Adventureland talking. My sunglasses sudden disappeared from my head. I looked around and Mr. Smee had made off with them! I followed him a good ways to where they were going to do meet'n'greet. Mr. Smee made sure I was first in line. When we took the pic, he proudly displayed the stolen booty aka my sunglasses.

Many years ago when Pocahontas was still in Adventureland, my dad had asked her what tribe she was from. She said "Powhatan" and my dad said "you're from the same tribe as Pocahontas." When we walked away, he realized that she was staying in character

My wife has the habit of being 'scolded' by characters. We were having a character breakfast at the Disneyland Hotel. WE asked Alice to sign our autograph book. she saw that the pen said Six Flags. She refused to sign it in a very pert British accent. She left and came back with some crayons and signed the book. She then started to draw flowers on our paper table cloth.

Then when we were at Cinderella's Table Snow white asked us where we were from. We said Seattle. She said 'Oh, Did you take a Ferry to get here?' Seattle, if you don't know has ferry boats that sail the waters in the area.

These stories are what make WDW so magical! Sept 09 was DD5 first trip and we were are at Akerhaus and all the princesses had just finished coming through and were going back "home" when we realized that somehow Snow White had missed our table. DD was disappointed so we mentioned it to our waiter and he was great and said he would take care of it. Next thing we know Snow White is at our table talking with DD for like five minutes about the dwarfs and how she was just in a hurry to get back to them. And she hands DD a card that all the princesses had signed and was so apologetic that she missed her.

Then we were a campMM in AK and Chip N Dale were really characters that day. They were playing with DD's hair, twisting and pulling it up over her head. Then Donald got in on it and Chip N Dale were teasing him and egging him on. Then for our picture, right before the CM took it, one of them turn DH's hat sideways and made him laugh so hard. That's what our pic looks like.

Not quite a complete Character interaction funny, But it was quite memorable and funny anyways.

A Couple years ago I had brought one of my good friends along with me on my first trip to WDW in about 10yrs. I had made ADR's at CRT since I knew she would enjoy the experience of eating in the castle. When it came time for our picture with Cinderella, Cinderella asked her, "So is this your Prince Charming?" (refering to me.). My friend, without missing a beat responded, "No. NO. Oh
HELL NO! You can have him!." Cinderella promptly responded, "Thanks, But my Prince is waiting on me upstairs."


My friend REALLY enjoyed that meal. I don't think she was really looking forward to it, But she was having a fun time with the waiter (Guy was about as tall as I am, and was saying how he enjoyed working there and how he always knew where his costume was and how he was even allowed to take it home some days since he was the only one that tall who worked there.)... And When the Fairy Godmother and mice showed up, She was BEAMING!


Sometimes all it takes to really add that extra bit of Disney Magic to us "jaded Disney vets" isn't a kid, but just being there with a good friend who hasn't really experienced it all before.

I've had lots of great "In Character" experiences, but I think the best one was with a "non-face" character. Marie in the France pavillion was going all out. She was REALLY cat like! Down on all fours, rubbing her head against people, even being completly mesmerized by the charm on the end of a little girl's pen. She played with it for a good 2 minutes, much to everyone's delight. Seriously, she was adorable. The cast member playing Marie obviously loved their job, and they were fantastic at it!

Other non-face characters that stick in my mind are The Queen of Hearts (grabbing my autograph book, slapping it shut, showing complete disdain - which I loved) and one Donald that really, really hated Mickey ears, LOL!

As for face characters, it's always fun for me when they remember things about their characters. I've seen characters who are just phoning it in... but when, say, Snow White spends a few moments talking apples with me (stay away from the red ones! Stick with the green, they're MUCH safer!), or Mulan asks if I've seen Mushu anywhere, I can tell that they care enough to really get to know the character they're becoming.

I've had a few character interactions. My family normally doesn't go visit the characters. When I was about 2 or 3 years old Goofy came up to my stroller when I was sleeping and put his finger over his mouth. I love the picture when I was little.

When we went to Disneyland with my girl scout troop, the Queen of Hearts came from the back areas and my dad had the bright idea to 'boo' her. She proceeded to chase him around. We got him a Queen of Hearts pin to remind him of his shame.

Finally, last Halloween, we went to the park and I was super excited to meet a villian. I love Maleficent and we waited at the villain meet and greet. I was wearing my Maleficent shirt and I asked the CM there if she would be the one to come out and I was told she was too scary for the children. I was depressed but stayed in line anyway. Jafar and Cruella were the ones who came...Cruella commented on my shirt and said "I feel so betrayed." I chuckled and didn't know what to say. She replied "at least it has spots" because it had polka dots on it. I was so excited about the interaction.

My best friend from college and I were having breakfast at 1900 Park Fare, or rather waiting to be seated. While we waited, we noticed that outside the holding cell, um, waiting area, there was a topiary of Mary Poppins.

I LOVE these stories!!! I will be searching out the stepsisters for our next trip!

We got to Toon Town in 2008 before it opened. When they opened the gate, everyone ran for the princess meet and greet. My husband asked if we could go back to Mickey's house. My 2yo son was a HUGE mickey fan. We went through his house and back into the Judge's tent. NO ONE else was there. Mickey came out to him, took his hand, and brought him back to where they take the pics. He was so star struck!!! Mickey and Minnie played with him and my 9month old son for 5 to 10 minutes until someone else finally came up - made our trip! How special he felt!

In '98, Smee stole my Mets hat and posed with it on top of his own hat. I'd post a pic, but I really don't want to advertise that I was wearing a Mets hat I'm a Phillies fan all the way, but I forgot to pack a hat and had to borrow one of my Dad's. Yes, he packed multiple Mets hats. Oh, the horror!

Incidentally, when we arrived at the Poly VERY late on out first night, the CM who took our luggage didn't even say "Aloha!" to us. He took one look at Dad's Mets attire and sang "Meet the Mets" VERY loudly. The whole song. What a greeting!! It was one of Dad's favorite Disney memories and he talked about it for years. Well, that plus Smee being a Mets fan

I forgot about this story until a few minutes ago when my daughter and I were discussing our upcoming trip... it isn't a "character" story but a CM (whom she still refers to with lots of curse words...) We were waiting in the que for Haunted Mansion and we got close to the door and my daughter (then 20 years old) walked by the "butler" and gave him a SUPER happy, goofy, bordering on obnoxious wave basically right in his face and a big ole grin and said HI!!!!!!!!... well he stayed in character and gave her THE MOST CHILLING LOOK I have ever seen. I said Oh man honey, that guy is gonna mess with youuuuuuu now...So he just stared at her and she kept turning around and he would NOT take his (evil) eyes off of her.. needless to say my (wussy) ADULT daughter got scared and said "Mommmmmmm!! Make him stoppppp!!!!" She really got frightened (and then regressed to calling me Mommy) which of course egged this guy on lol.. so we get into the stretching room and he is circling the outer ring and telling people the "rules" but the ENTIRE time he is still WICKEDLY, EVILLY STARING at my daughter, literally not taking his eyes off her once. (When I tell the story, I say he looked like he was going to rip her head off and drink her brains, that's how evil he was looking at her! This guy was good lol) by this time she is freaking OUT and getting as much to the center of the room as possible and as far from him as she can.. ( I, wonderful mom that I am, naturally was lmaooo at her) She would have climbed on my back if she could have...well.. OUT go the lights and she is still as close to me as possible... the lights come back on.. and this guy is HOVERING over the back of her head!!!!.. I said Um.. turn around honey... and he is JUST THERE staring down at her, not saying a word... she about lost it, she tried climbing into my arms and I was just dying.....lolol MOST.AWESOME.THING.EVER. We still can't figure out how he found her in the dark... maybe they have night goggles?? But def. one of my absolute favorite memories of all time.. (needless to say, they would NOT do this to a child, grown-ups are fair game!) sigh...oh memories!!

My family has only had one trip to Disney, last May, but we had so many wonderful character interactions.

We too spent time with the step sisters. They asked DS5 if he would marry one of them, and he nodded that yes he would, and he chose Drizella. The sisters immediately began planning the wedding. Lady Trumaine piped up that planning a wedding takes time, and they really musn't rush these things, and that the wedding could be held no sooner then oh, 5 or 6pm that evening. Then Drizella gave DS5 a great big kiss on the cheek. He still gets embarrassed when we talk about it.

We met the Incredibles at DHS. DH noted that Mrs. Incredible signed while Mr. Incredible used a stamp, and Mrs. Incredible made a gesture like, "I know, can you believe it." DH said, "He must have really bad handwriting." At this, Mr. Incredible who was leaning over to stamp the kids books, stood up real straight, tensed all his muscles and walked slowly over to DH, stopping in front of him looking very much like he was about to pummel him. DH murmured an apology, then asked if he could get a pic with them. They nodded yes, and DH stood next to Mr. Incredible. Then Mrs. Incredible came up and stood directly in front of DH so you couldn't see him. DH poked his head out the side, and then they took a real pic as well. This is my kid's fave story from Disney, when Daddy almost got beat up by Mr. Incredible.

Also, meeting Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen was fabulous as well. We got to spend a lot of time with them because we were the last family in line. Tiana asked where we were from and we said Virginia. Naveen said that Tiana had a friend from there, you know the one with the funny name. Tiana told us he was referring to Pocahontas and protested that she did not have a funny name. Naveen said, "Well, it's not the kind of name you'd find on a toothbrush." Tiana asked about the name Naveen and pointed out that you don't see that on many toothbrushes either, but Naveen protested that it was on a lot of toothbrushes in Maldonia. The "Wish" show at the Castle was starting and Naveen started complaining about Snow White's singing voice. They did a lot of playful arguing, I wish I could remember it all. DD8 complimented Tiana on her garden and Tiana sought me out to compliment me on having such a gracious family.

As a side note, we took a trip to Busch Gardens a couple weeks ago and the whole time DH and I kept saying to each other "Disney does this so much better." After that day DH agreed to another trip in September 2011. We are very excited to return.

I thought of a couple of other stories to add.

My niece was 13 on her first WDW visit. We were getting pics and autographs from Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and Eeyore, in the back of the UK pavilion at Epcot, just in time for the British Invasion to go to the stage and start their show. When Pooh finished signing her book, he grabbed my niece's hands and started dancing with her to the music! They danced for almost a whole song! It was such a sweet magical moment.

While waiting to meet Cruella, I saw this hysterical interaction. A little girl handed Ms. De Vil her autograph book and a retractable pen. Cruella examined the pen with a disgusted look on her face and held it out to give it back to the little girl. "We have a problem here" Ms. De Vil growled. The little girl clicked the pen open and Cruella snatched it back, smiled and said, "That's better" and proceeded to sign.

Oh I just remembered a fun Marie story. Last year I was at the World with my mom and older sister at the time (who didn't quite GET Disney.) Going around World Showcase we see Marie in France. That was big for me since it was the first time I saw her then my sister saw the line. In short she was like "Why do you have to wait in such a long line?" It was only about 5-10 minutes before we got to her, big sis having her interaction first.

I get up there and Marie just starts acting like such her character, playing with the puff ball on my Tinkerbell santa hat, it was so fun and brightened up my mood after dealing with the worst sister on the trip.

Another one on a different day and wearing the same hat, I'm just with my mom this time as we are waiting in line for Aladin and Jasmin and when we get there Aladin holds up my hat and says "Genie would love this hat." It was blue and so in Character for him.

Last time DW and I visited was for our anniversary so at Chef Mickey's DW showed Minnie the diamond anniversary ring I gave her. Minnie loved it. Many people ask Minnie when her and Mickey are getting married so we asked Mickey when he came by "what's the deal Mickey? When are you getting a ring for Minnie?" Mickey responded by rubbing is fingers together indicating that he did not have the cash!

I find it hard to believe that Mickey does not have the money to buy Minnie a ring. Then the CM with him said he has commitment issues!

OH! I finally thought of one!

This was from years back during the Disney Stars and Motorcars Parade. My family and I always sit near Sounds Dangerous for the parades because my parents can sit and I get a pretty good angle on filming the parade. So we're sitting there and the "Director" comes to do his introduction to the parade in our area. I start filming with a camcoder that we've had since 1999, so NOT one of those nice mini DVD ones and NOT one with a viewscreen (which we thankfully upgraded to three years ago). Not to mention I have thin arms.

Well the Director notices I am the only one filming him. He decides to have a little fun by running all over the place and ducking around the camera to see if I can keep up with him and then he would run towards me for a "close-up". The parade starts and ever so often he comes back over to me, speaking to the camera, and offers some commentary on the parade or asks "Are you still filming this??????" or "How's your arm doing?"

Well the parade ends and we wait until the majority of the crowd clears out. I start packing up the camcorder and the Director walks toward me laughing. He says "I'm sorry, folks. I have to come over here and shake the hand of the girl with the arm who just held up that camcoder for the last 30 minutes. I AM IMPRESSED! You must be a lot stronger than you look! No one ever films me because I'm just the Director!"

I enjoyed reading all the fun stories. I have a few myself.

At The Garden Grill last summer, we saw Dale twice. The second time, Dale stopped to interact with us. When we told him that we liked them best, Dale indicated that he was better because Chip didn't bathe or wear deodorant.

At Crystal Palace this past December, my brother and I were enjoying lunch when Piglet arrived. My brother had just taken a huge bite of ham. We asked Piglet why they were serving ham when he was a guest of honor. He just shrugged and hung his head. When Pooh came around, we said that maybe pork products shouldn't be served when Piglet is there. Pooh just started laughing.

On our cruise, we met Chip and Dale at every opportunity. By the time we docked at Castaway Cay, they were accusing us of being stalkers. I just shrugged and said, "But you're our favorites.". That seemed to settle it as they gave us thumbs up and settled in for several pictures.

Once I encountered Mulan all by herself on a very uncrowded day.

We attended MNSSHP in Oct 2006 all dressed as pirates (see sig pic). At midnight we were heading out and passed by POTC when Peter Pan jumped in front of us out of nowhere and asked "Hey, have you ever ridden on POTC?" We tiredly replied "Yes, we have". He said "But I bet you never rode it with me and Capt Hook before". We were taken backstage with Peter Pan, Capt Hook and two handlers, through a series of doors to the front of the line. There were still people waiting to ride, but they sent two empty boats before putting us on a boat with the Pete and Hook, the handlers in the next boat and then two more empty boats. It was like we had the ride to ourselves! Peter Pan kept up a running commentary the whole ride, it was hilarious. My DS6 later said that is was his Year of A Million Dreams wish come true. What's funny is that the handlers were taking photos the whole time and even had us all pose on the boat for pics, but with their cameras not ours. We were so surprised by the whole thing that we didn't even take any pics. We always wonder if we are in some publicity shots somewhere.
